Description

Zoom on the Westinghouse WPro8500

In a nutshell, the Westinghouse WPro8500 is a powerful portable generator mostly geared towards:

  • Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
  • Professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working

In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed, including its emission compliance information.

Power & Run Time

The Westinghouse WPro8500 in use

The Westinghouse WPro8500

The Westinghouse WPro8500 is powered by a 457 cc (13.5 hp) Westinghouse OHV 4-stroke engine. It delivers 120/240V, runs on gasoline and offers a running wattage of 8500W as well as a peak wattage of 11500W.

The generator features a conventional pull-start mechanism and also a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included). It is rated for a noise of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a dishwasher). Moreover, to offer you even more convenience, the WPro8500 can also be remotely started (key fob included).

With a full tank, the WPro8500 can operate for up to 17.5 hours (fuel consumption around 0.38 GPH), thanks to its fuel capacity of 6.6 gallons.

As the WPro8500 produces a clean sine wave, with a <5% Total Harmonic Disruption (THD), sensitive electronics may be plugged in the AC outlets safely.

Outlets

The full GFCI control panel features the upcoming 6 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R)
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

Additionally, it features 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports allowing you to conveniently charge electronics such as mobile phones and tablets.

Even if this Westinghouse generator isn't quite RV Ready, it still allows for an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor, thanks to its L5-30R receptacle. Besides, as the WPro8500 holds a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: you'll easily be able to connect it to your breaker box to power your home during a power outage.

Portability

The dimensions of the Westinghouse WPro8500, which are L27.5 x W27.5 x H25.5 in, and its typical, open frame design provides stability and enables the generator to be raised above ground level. The design is ideal for rough environments and demanding outdoor use.

Although this generator is technically considered 'portable' (in the sense that it can be moved), its 216 lbs make it incredibly difficult to manually lift and transport. However, this lack of maneuverability is compensated by its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle, with which you can conveniently shift it, once it's on the ground.

A lift hook located on the top of the frame offers an additional safety feature while facilitating the transport, loading and unloading of the generator.

Features

The WPro8500's control panel

The WPro8500's status and activity may be monitored conveniently via the control panel, as it features a convenient meter showing you voltage, frequency and lifetime hours.

A built-in fuel gauge allows for a quick, easy and convenient check of the fuel level of the generator.

As for its security measures, the device features an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, letting you use it with a peace of mind.

Apart from the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), which lets you start it right away, the Westinghouse WPro8500 also is packed along with the following accessories: battery charger, oil, key fob, funnel and tool kit.

Emissions

The Westinghouse WPro8500 is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. It can therefore be sold and purchased in all 50 states, including California.

Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, which makes it suitable for use in forested areas.

The Westinghouse WPro8500 versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WPro8500 compare to generators of similar power (between 8000 and 9000 W).

  • With a dry weight of 216 pounds, the Westinghouse WPro8500 finds itself in the expected weight range for generators able to produce between 8000 and 9000 rated watts. Regarding dry weight, one of the champions in the same power range is the Dewalt DXGNR8000, with a dry weight of only 183 lbs.
  • Since the generator's noise is rated at 74 dBA, it has the roughly average expected noise for a device of similar power. If you are concerned with noise, check out the A-iPower SUA12000ED, which is one of the least noisy generators in its power range, with a noise rating of just 69 dBA.
  • As the WPro8500 features an autonomy of up to 17.5 hours at 25% load, it has one of the highest run times in comparison to the other generators of its power range.
  • Even though run times are undoubtedly important, they are dependent on the fuel capacity to a large extent. For a more wholesome picture, we must take into consideration the fuel consumption of the generator. This generator, with an estimated fuel consumption of just 0.38 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load, is one of the most fuel efficient generators, for the previously mentioned wattage range.
According to our stats, the following comparison is pretty popular: Westinghouse WPro8500 vs Westinghouse WGen9500.

Price comparison

As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 8000-9000W generators, the Westinghouse WPro8500 is on the cheap side of the price range.

It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.

About Westinghouse

The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, several sources report that they are in many cases manufactured in China.

Warranty Information

The Westinghouse WPro8500 is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
For more information about the warranty of Westinghouse generators, please consult Westinghouse's warranty policies (opens in a new tab). Alternatively, you can also contact their Customer Support: 1-855-944-3571.

I use the WPro8500 to power a 10 circuit manual transfer switch for key circuits in our home. Had an issue with the carburetor / solenoid switch after the initial use. Westinghouse sent a replacement carburetor kit that was easy to switch out. I’ve owned two other well known brands and I’m very pleased with this generator.
