Zoom on the Westinghouse WPro8500
In a nutshell, the Westinghouse WPro8500 is a powerful portable generator mostly geared towards:
- Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
- Professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working
In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed, including its emission compliance information.
Power & Run Time
The Westinghouse WPro8500 is powered by a 457 cc (13.5 hp) Westinghouse OHV 4-stroke engine. It delivers 120/240V, runs on gasoline and offers a running wattage of 8500W as well as a peak wattage of 11500W.
The generator features a conventional pull-start mechanism and also a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included). It is rated for a noise of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a dishwasher). Moreover, to offer you even more convenience, the WPro8500 can also be remotely started (key fob included).
With a full tank, the WPro8500 can operate for up to 17.5 hours (fuel consumption around 0.38 GPH), thanks to its fuel capacity of 6.6 gallons.
As the WPro8500 produces a clean sine wave, with a <5% Total Harmonic Disruption (THD), sensitive electronics may be plugged in the AC outlets safely.
The full GFCI control panel features the upcoming 6 AC outlets:
Additionally, it features 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports allowing you to conveniently charge electronics such as mobile phones and tablets.
Even if this Westinghouse generator isn't quite RV Ready, it still allows for an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor, thanks to its L5-30R receptacle. Besides, as the WPro8500 holds a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: you'll easily be able to connect it to your breaker box to power your home during a power outage.
The dimensions of the Westinghouse WPro8500, which are L27.5 x W27.5 x H25.5 in, and its typical, open frame design provides stability and enables the generator to be raised above ground level. The design is ideal for rough environments and demanding outdoor use.
Although this generator is technically considered 'portable' (in the sense that it can be moved), its 216 lbs make it incredibly difficult to manually lift and transport. However, this lack of maneuverability is compensated by its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle, with which you can conveniently shift it, once it's on the ground.
A lift hook located on the top of the frame offers an additional safety feature while facilitating the transport, loading and unloading of the generator.
The WPro8500's status and activity may be monitored conveniently via the control panel, as it features a convenient meter showing you voltage, frequency and lifetime hours.
A built-in fuel gauge allows for a quick, easy and convenient check of the fuel level of the generator.
As for its security measures, the device features an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, letting you use it with a peace of mind.
Apart from the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), which lets you start it right away, the Westinghouse WPro8500 also is packed along with the following accessories: battery charger, oil, key fob, funnel and tool kit.
The Westinghouse WPro8500 is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. It can therefore be sold and purchased in all 50 states, including California.
Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, which makes it suitable for use in forested areas.
The Westinghouse WPro8500 versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WPro8500 compare to generators of similar power (between 8000 and 9000 W).
- At a weight of 216 pounds, the Westinghouse WPro8500 places in the expected weight range of the generators in the 8000-9000 rated wattage range. If weight is your top priority, one of the champions in this power category is the Dewalt DXGNR8000, weighing just 183 pounds.
- This generator has a somewhat average expected noise for its power range, rated at 74 dBA. If you are concerned with noise, check out the A-iPower SUA12000ED, which is one of the least noisy generators in its power range, with a noise rating of just 69 dBA.
- Since the WPro8500 boasts with a run time of up to 17.5 hours at 25% load, it can be safely judged as one of the devices with the highest run time among those of a comparable output.
- The run time is important, but also hugely depends on the capacity of the fuel tank and doesn't mean much if we don't talk about fuel consumption as well. At an estimated fuel consumption of 0.38 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load, this generator is one of the most fuel efficient units within its wattage category.
The bottom line
- Several accessories included
- Full GFCI panel
- Remote start
- Clean sine wave
- High run time
- Fuel efficient
- Decent weight (216 lbs)
- Acceptable noise (74 dBA)
The Westinghouse WPro8500 doesn't have any notably low specs.

The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, several sources report that they are in many cases manufactured in China.
The Westinghouse WPro8500 is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
