Description
Zoom on the Westinghouse WGen9500DFc
The Westinghouse WGen9500DFc is the newer version of the extremely popular WGen9500DF. It's a powerful portable generator especially useful for:
- Homeowners who wish to power almost all appliances in their house under any circumstances
- Professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working
- Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures
- RV travellers wishing to enhance their freedom and nomad lifestyle
The subsequent sections will explore in detail its power characteristics, the diverse outlets it provides, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it offers.
Power & Run Time
Delivering 120/240V, the Westinghouse WGen9500DFc is enhanced by dual-fuel technology, providing power and versatility. Running on gasoline, it boasts a running wattage of 9,500W and a starting wattage of 12,500W. Alternatively, when propane-powered, it delivers 8,500 running watts and 11,200 starting watts.
At a noise rating of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a vacuum cleaner), this generator can be started via a conventional pull-start mechanism, or a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included). To add further convenience, the WGen9500DFc can be remotely started (key fob included).
The WGen9500DFc, with a fuel capacity of 6.6 gallons, reaches a run time of up to 12 hours utilizing gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.83 GPH). Alternatively, it can reach a run time of around 7 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.67 GPH) with propane.
Considering its high Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of less than 23%, it is not recommended to rely on the WGen9500DFc for powering sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel features the upcoming 6 AC outlets:
If your RV requires a 50-amp service, consider this Westinghouse unit RV-ready, as it includes a 14-50R outlet. In addition, thanks to its twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the WGen9500DFc is transfer switch ready, facilitating easy hookup to your breaker box to provide backup power for your home during blackouts.
Westinghouse's ST Switch Outlet

The ST Switch outlet
The WGen9500DFc is what Westinghouse calls Smart Switch Ready. This means that it features a special outlet that allows for an automatic transfer of power in case of a power outage.
To benefit from this feature, you'll need the Westinghouse ST Switch (opens in a new tab), which is not included with the generator.
Simply put, the ST Switch is a cost-effective and versatile portable automatic transfer switch, which can be installed quickly and easily, without an electrician.
Plug the ST Switch into one of your household 120V outlets, plug your appliances to the ST Switch, and connect the WGen9500DFc to the ST Switch via the special outlet and a 120V cord. The generator will automatically turn on when the power goes out, and automatically turn off when the power returns.
Portability
With dimensions of L27.2 x W26.1 x H26.5 in, the standard open frame design of the Westinghouse WGen9500DFc provides stability and easy maintenance access to components, as well as good air circulation. This type of design is ideal for tough environments and heavy outdoor use.
Despite its weight of 212 lbs, the generator is still considered 'portable,' meaning it is movable, although its heftiness may restrict portability in certain environments or require additional considerations for transportation and setup. However, the limited maneuverability is remedied with its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle, facilitating convenient shifting once the generator is positioned on the ground.
Features
The control panel of the WGen9500DFc includes a convenient meter, displaying voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours information, helpful for the monitoring of its status and activity.
The fuel level of the generator can be determined quickly, easily, and conveniently with the help of its built-in fuel gauge.
As far as security is concerned, the generator can be used with a peace of mind, as it features an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off.
It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.
Apart from the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), which lets you start it right away, the Westinghouse WGen9500DFc also is packed along with the following accessories: key fob, oil, funnel, propane hose, tool kit and battery charger. The official storage cover and running cover are also available, as separate purchases.

The Westinghouse WGen9500DFc versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen9500DFc compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 9000 and 10000 W).
- With a dry weight of 212 pounds, the Westinghouse WGen9500DFc finds itself in the expected weight range for dual fuel generators able to produce between 9000 and 10000 rated watts. Regarding dry weight, one of the champions in the same power range is the Westinghouse iGen11000DFc, with a dry weight of only 187.4 lbs.
- This generator, with its lowest possible noise rated at 74 dBA falls into the more noisy category, compared to other devices of a similar running wattage. If you are concerned with noise, check out the DuroMax XP11000iH, which is one of the least noisy generators in its power range, with a noise rating of just 61 dBA.
- Autonomy-wise, with around 8 hours on a full tank at a 50% load, the WGen9500DFc is on the low end when compared to other dual fuel generators of a similar power output. If you consider autonomy on a single full tank as one of the deciding factors, one of the generators in the same power range that offers the highest run time is the Westinghouse iGen11000DFc, with around 12 hours.
- While the run time is an important parameter, it is dependent on the fuel tank's capacity and thus, doesn't say much on its own unless we consider fuel consumption as well. At a 50% load, the generator consumes an estimated 0.83 gallons of gasoline per hour, falling within the average consumption range of units with similar output. If you wish to further improve in the area of fuel efficiency, the Westinghouse iGen11000DFc, which boasts with a gas consumption of only 0.66 GPH, may be the right generator for you.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 9000-10000W dual fuel generators, the Westinghouse WGen9500DFc is on the cheap side of the price range.
It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.

About Westinghouse
The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China and Vietnam.
Warranty Information
The Westinghouse WGen9500DFc is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
