Description

Zoom on the Westinghouse WGen9500c

The Westinghouse WGen9500c is the newer version of the popular WGen9500. It's a powerful portable generator especially useful for:

  • Homeowners who wish to power almost all appliances in their house under any circumstances
  • Professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working

In the following paragraphs, we shall explore the power characteristics, available outlets, portability, and any additional features of the device, along with its emission compliance information.

Power & Run Time

The Westinghouse WGen9500c in use

The Westinghouse WGen9500c

The Westinghouse WGen9500c houses a 457 cc (13.5 hp) Westinghouse OHV 4-stroke engine, which provides 120/240V, consumes gasoline and delivers a running wattage of 9500W along with a peak wattage of 12500W.

The generator is rated for a noise of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a vacuum cleaner). Its starting mechanisms include a conventional pull-start mechanism and a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included). To add further convenience, the WGen9500c can be remotely started (key fob included).

Thanks to a fuel capacity of 6.6 gallons, the WGen9500c can operate for up to 17.5 hours with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.38 GPH).

Since the WGen9500c has a somewhat high THD (<23%), it is advisable to not use it for the powering of sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel provides the upcoming 6 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

Furthermore, it has 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports (USB-A) allowing you to conveniently charge electronics such as mobile phones and tablets.

As it features a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the WGen9500c is transfer switch ready: in case of a power outage, you will be easily able to connect it to a breaker box and power your household.

Westinghouse's ST Switch Outlet

Picture of the ST Switch outlet

The ST Switch outlet

The WGen9500c is what Westinghouse calls Smart Switch Ready. This means that it features a special outlet that allows for an automatic transfer of power in case of a power outage.

To benefit from this feature, you'll need the Westinghouse ST Switch (opens in a new tab), which is not included with the generator.

Simply put, the ST Switch is a cost-effective and versatile portable automatic transfer switch, which can be installed quickly and easily, without an electrician.

Plug the ST Switch into one of your household 120V outlets, plug your appliances to the ST Switch, and connect the WGen9500c to the ST Switch via the special outlet and a 120V cord. The generator will automatically turn on when the power goes out, and automatically turn off when the power returns.

Portability

The Westinghouse WGen9500c has a conventional, open frame design, of the following dimensions: L27.2 x W26.1 x H26.5 in, which offers support and allows it to be raised above ground level. The generator is designed for ideal use outdoors and in rough environments.

Although this generator is technically considered 'portable' (in the sense that it can be moved), its 209.1 lbs make it incredibly difficult to manually lift and transport. However, its challenging mobility is solved by its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle, which will ease its displacement, once it is on the floor.

Features

The WGen9500c's control panel

The control panel of the WGen9500c includes a convenient meter showing you voltage, frequency and lifetime hours, helpful for the monitoring of its status and activity.

The generator includes a built-in fuel gauge, a quick, easy and convenient method of checking the device’s gas level.

From a security standpoint, the product offers an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), allowing you to use it with a peace of mind.

It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down. It’s a welcomed additional security feature, but don’t forget to always take your generator outside (opens in a new tab).

Besides the classic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to get you promptly started, the Westinghouse WGen9500c also comes with some accessories: oil, tool kit, battery charger, funnel and key fob are included. An official storage cover is also available, as a separate purchase.

Emissions

The Westinghouse WGen9500c is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Thus, selling and purchasing this generator is allowed in each of the 50 states, including California.

Moreover, it features a spark arrestor and thus, may be used in forested areas.

The Westinghouse WGen9500c versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen9500c compare to generators of similar power (between 9000 and 10000 W).

  • Weight-wise, the Westinghouse WGen9500c has only 209.1 lbs, which renders it one of the lighter generators which produce 9000 to 10000 rated watts. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the Rainier R12000DF, standing at just 196 lbs.
  • The generator can be considered average in its noise for its power category, as it is rated at 74 dBA. If you are concerned with noise, check out the A-iPower SUA12000ED, which is one of the least noisy generators in its power range, with a noise rating of just 69 dBA.
  • Since the WGen9500c boasts with a run time of up to 17.5 hours at 25% load, it can be safely judged as one of the devices with the highest run time among those of a comparable output.
  • The run time is important, but also hugely depends on the capacity of the fuel tank and doesn't mean much if we don't talk about fuel consumption as well. At an estimated fuel consumption of 0.38 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load, this generator is one of the most fuel efficient units within its wattage category.

Price comparison

As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 9000-10000W generators, the Westinghouse WGen9500c is on the cheap side of the price range.

It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.

About Westinghouse

The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, several sources report that they are in many cases manufactured in China.

Warranty Information

The Westinghouse WGen9500c is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
