Description

Zoom on the Westinghouse WGen9500c

The Westinghouse WGen9500c is the newer version of the popular WGen9500. It's a powerful portable generator especially useful for:

  • Homeowners who wish to power almost all appliances in their house under any circumstances
  • Professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working
  • Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures
  • RV travellers wishing to enhance their freedom and nomad lifestyle

The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the extra features it benefits from.

Power & Run Time

The Westinghouse WGen9500c in use

The Westinghouse WGen9500c

The Westinghouse WGen9500c houses a 457 cc (13.5 hp) Westinghouse OHV 4-stroke engine with cast iron sleeve, which provides 120/240V, consumes gasoline and delivers a running wattage of 9,500W along with a peak wattage of 12,500W.

Operating with a noise rating of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a shower), this generator offers two starting options: a simple traditional pull-start mechanism and a straightforward and intuitive electric starter (battery included). Additionally, the WGen9500c may be remotely started, enhancing user convenience (key fob included).

The WGen9500c's fuel tank, boasting 6.6 gallons, allows it to operate for up to 12 hours with a full tank (with an estimated fuel consumption of 0.55 GPH).

The WGen9500c is unsuitable for the powering of sensitive electronic devices due to its high THD (<23%).

Outlets

The control panel includes the following 6 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

In addition, it provides 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports (USB-A) designed for hassle-free charging of various electronic devices such as smartphones and tablets, ensuring uninterrupted usage.

If your RV requires a 50-amp service, consider this Westinghouse unit RV-ready, as it includes a 14-50R outlet. In addition, because the WGen9500c is equipped with a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: it can power your home during a power outage, as it can be easily connected to your breaker box to power your household.

Westinghouse's ST Switch Outlet

Picture of the ST Switch outlet

The ST Switch outlet

The WGen9500c is what Westinghouse calls Smart Switch Ready. This means that it features a special outlet that allows for an automatic transfer of power in case of a power outage.

To benefit from this feature, you'll need the Westinghouse ST Switch (opens in a new tab), which is not included with the generator.

Simply put, the ST Switch is a cost-effective and versatile portable automatic transfer switch, which can be installed quickly and easily, without an electrician.

Plug the ST Switch into one of your household 120V outlets, plug your appliances to the ST Switch, and connect the WGen9500c to the ST Switch via the special outlet and a 120V cord. The generator will automatically turn on when the power goes out, and automatically turn off when the power returns.

Portability

At L27.2 x W26.1 x H26.5 in, the traditional open frame structure of the Westinghouse WGen9500c ensures stability while facilitating convenient maintenance access to components and promoting air cooling. This type of design is ideal for tough environments and heavy outdoor use.

Even though this device may be technically portable (as in movable), manipulation and transportation without special equipment can be a challenge, as it weighs 209.1 pounds. Nevertheless, thanks to its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle (a decent solution to its lack of maneuverability), the generator can be easily moved, once placed the ground.

Features

The WGen9500c's control panel

Integrated into the control center of the WGen9500c are a convenient meter, displaying voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours information, facilitating the monitoring of its status and activity.

A built-in fuel gauge allows for a quick, easy and convenient check of the fuel level of the generator.

From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, giving you a peace of mind during use.

It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.

Apart from the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to facilitate setup, the Westinghouse WGen9500c features extra accessories: key fob, battery charger, funnel, tool kit and oil. The official storage cover and running cover are also available, as separate purchases.

The Westinghouse WGen9500c versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen9500c compare to generators of similar power (between 9000 and 10000 W).

  • In terms of its dry weight, the Westinghouse WGen9500c stands at only 209.1 lbs, meaning that is one of the lighter devices of the 9000-10000 rated wattage category If you are mindful of weight, the Westinghouse iGen11000DFc is among the top contenders in this power range, with a dry weight of 187.4 pounds.
  • This generator has a somewhat average expected noise for its power range, rated at 74 dBA. For those who are looking for a less noisy device, we suggest the DuroMax XP11000iH. With just 61 dBA, it is one of the most quiet devices in this power range.
  • Regarding its autonomy, the autonomy of the WGen9500c, reaching up to 12 hours at a 25% load, can be considered as low end, compared to other products of a roughly equal output. If runtime is a priority for you, the Westinghouse iGen11000TFc stands out as one of the generators with the longest run time in its power range, providing up to 19 hours of continuous use.
  • Run times are important, yet thanks to their dependence on the fuel capacity, they should be judged along with the fuel consumption of the device. When it comes to fuel efficiency among generators with similar wattage, this generator lags behind, with a consumption rate of 0.55 GPH at a 25% load. If you're placing a high priority on fuel consumption, the DuroMax XP11000iH, with a low fuel consumption rate of 0.39 GPH, could be an option to consider.
According to our stats, the following comparison is pretty popular: Westinghouse WGen9500c vs Westinghouse WGen9500.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 9000-10000W generators, the Westinghouse WGen9500c is on the cheap side of the price range.

About Westinghouse

The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China and Vietnam.

Warranty Information

The Westinghouse WGen9500c is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
