Description

Zoom on the Westinghouse WGen9500c

The Westinghouse WGen9500c is the newer version of the popular WGen9500. It's a powerful portable generator especially useful for:

  • Small homeowners in search of a full power backup solution
  • Professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure
  • Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures
  • RV travellers looking for even more independence

In the upcoming sections, you'll discover its power characteristics, the array of outlets it presents, its overall portability, and the additional features it possesses.

Power & Run Time

The Westinghouse WGen9500c in use

The Westinghouse WGen9500c

With a 457 cc (13.5 hp) Westinghouse OHV 4-stroke engine, the Westinghouse WGen9500c operates on gasoline, providing 120/240V, with a running wattage of 9,500W and a starting wattage of 12,500W.

With a noise rating of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a dishwasher), the generator features a standard recoil pull-rope starting mechanism, but also an intuitive and practical electric starter (battery included). For additional convenience, the WGen9500c may also be remotely started (key fob included).

Featuring a 6.6 gallons fuel tank, the WGen9500c can provide power for up to 12 hours on a full tank (with fuel consumption averaging 0.55 gallons per hour).

Given the WGen9500c's high Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of less than 23%, it is advisable to avoid using it to power sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel provides the upcoming 6 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

It also sports 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports (USB-A) with which you may charge electronics, for example mobile phones or tablets, conveniently.

For RV owners with a 50-amp service, this Westinghouse unit is RV-ready, boasting a 14-50R outlet. In addition, with its twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the WGen9500c is designed to be transfer switch ready, allowing easy connection to your breaker box for powering your home during a blackout.

Westinghouse's ST Switch Outlet

Picture of the ST Switch outlet

The ST Switch outlet

The WGen9500c is what Westinghouse calls Smart Switch Ready. This means that it features a special outlet that allows for an automatic transfer of power in case of a power outage.

To benefit from this feature, you'll need the Westinghouse ST Switch (opens in a new tab), which is not included with the generator.

Simply put, the ST Switch is a cost-effective and versatile portable automatic transfer switch, which can be installed quickly and easily, without an electrician.

Plug the ST Switch into one of your household 120V outlets, plug your appliances to the ST Switch, and connect the WGen9500c to the ST Switch via the special outlet and a 120V cord. The generator will automatically turn on when the power goes out, and automatically turn off when the power returns.

Portability

With its L27.2 x W26.1 x H26.5 in dimensions, the open frame structure of the Westinghouse WGen9500c guarantees stability, simplified maintenance access to components, and better air cooling than enclosed units. The design is ideal for rough environments and demanding outdoor use.

As the generator's weight is 209.1 pounds, manually moving it or transporting it may be challenging, despite the fact that it is technically considered 'portable' (movable). However, the lack of maneuverability can be offset with its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle, which allows for convenient shifting once the generator is placed on the ground.

Features

The WGen9500c's control panel

The WGen9500c's control center features a convenient meter, providing voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours data to aid you with the monitoring of its status and activity.

The inclusion of a built-in fuel gauge in the generator streamlines gas level checks for quick and convenient assessments.

Security-wise, this product benefits from an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), which gives you a complete peace of mind when using it.

It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.

Alongside the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) for quick setup, the Westinghouse WGen9500c is bundled with additional accessories: funnel, oil, key fob, battery charger and tool kit. The official storage cover and running cover are also available, as separate purchases.

The Westinghouse WGen9500c versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen9500c compare to generators of similar power (between 9000 and 10000 W).

  • In terms of its weight, the Westinghouse WGen9500c weighs merely 209.1 pounds, earning it a spot among the lighter generators within the 9000 to 10000 rated wattage category. if you wish to prioritize weight, the Westinghouse iGen11000DFc is one of the top contenders in its power category, weighing only 187.4 pounds.
  • Given its rated noise level of 74 dBA, this generator aligns with the average expected noise rating for devices of similar power. If you are concerned with noise, check out the DuroMax XP11000iH, which is one of the least noisy generators in its power range, with a noise rating of just 61 dBA.
  • Regarding its autonomy, the WGen9500c can run for up to 12 hours at a 25% load, aligning it with the lower performers in its power range. Furthermore, considering the run times, one of the generators which have a roughly same power output, with the highest autonomy, is the DuroMax XP11500EH, as it provides up to 20 hours.
  • Run time is crucial, but it heavily relies on the fuel tank's capacity. Thus, considering fuel efficiency alongside is essential. In fact, this generator is not one of the most fuel-efficient options in the aforementioned wattage range: its estimated gasoline consumption at 25% load is around 0.55 GPH. If you wish to further improve in the area of fuel efficiency, the DuroMax XP11000iH, which boasts with a gas consumption of only 0.39 GPH, may be the right generator for you.
According to our stats, the following comparison is pretty popular: Westinghouse WGen9500c vs Westinghouse WGen9500.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 9000-10000W generators, the Westinghouse WGen9500c is on the cheap side of the price range.

It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.

About Westinghouse

The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China.

Warranty Information

The Westinghouse WGen9500c is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
