Zoom on the Westinghouse WGen9500

In summary, the Westinghouse WGen9500 is a powerful portable generator especially useful for:

  • Homeowners who wish to power almost all appliances in their house under any circumstances
  • Professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment
  • Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
  • RV travellers who wish to upgrade their experience to another level

In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed.

Power & Run Time

The Westinghouse WGen9500 in use

The Westinghouse WGen9500

Westinghouse WGen9500 runs on gasoline, powered by a 457 cc (13.5 hp) Westinghouse OHV 4-stroke engine with cast iron sleeve, delivering 120/240V, boasting a running wattage of 9,500W alongside a starting wattage of 12,500W.

With a noise rating of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a shower), the generator features a simple traditional pull-start mechanism, but also a no-fuss and convenient electric starter (battery included). To add further convenience, the WGen9500 can be remotely started (key fob included).

The WGen9500's fuel tank, boasting 6.6 gallons, allows it to operate for up to 12 hours with a full tank (with an estimated fuel consumption of 0.55 GPH).

Since the WGen9500 has a high THD (<23%), it is advisable to not use it for the powering of sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel provides the upcoming 6 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

Additionally, it offers 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports enabling convenient charging of devices like mobile phones and tablets.

With its 14-50R outlet, this Westinghouse unit is RV-ready for owners with a 50-amp service in their RVs. In addition, since the WGen9500 bears a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: it is easily connectible to a breaker box and can power your home in case of a power outage.

Westinghouse's ST Switch Outlet

Picture of the ST Switch outlet

The ST Switch outlet

The WGen9500 is what Westinghouse calls Smart Switch Ready. This means that it features a special outlet that allows for an automatic transfer of power in case of a power outage.

To benefit from this feature, you'll need the Westinghouse ST Switch (opens in a new tab), which is not included with the generator.

Simply put, the ST Switch is a cost-effective and versatile portable automatic transfer switch, which can be installed quickly and easily, without an electrician.

Plug the ST Switch into one of your household 120V outlets, plug your appliances to the ST Switch, and connect the WGen9500 to the ST Switch via the special outlet and a 120V cord. The generator will automatically turn on when the power goes out, and automatically turn off when the power returns.

Portability

Measuring L27.2 x W26.5 x H26.5 in, the classic open frame build of the Westinghouse WGen9500 delivers stability and easy maintenance access to components, facilitating air circulation. This type of design is ideal for tough environments and heavy outdoor use.

Even at 208 lbs, the generator is categorized as 'portable,' suggesting its movability, although its weight may impede its portability. Still, once it is on the ground, its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle can easily solve the issue of low mobility and allow for easy relocation of the device.

Features

The WGen9500's control panel

The control panel of the WGen9500 includes a convenient meter, displaying voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours information, helpful for the monitoring of its status and activity.

The generator includes a built-in fuel gauge, a quick, easy and convenient method of checking the device’s gas level.

Security-wise, this product benefits from an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), which gives you a complete peace of mind when using it.

Along the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), useful for starting the generator right away, the Westinghouse WGen9500's package also includes these accessories: battery charger, key fob, tool kit, funnel and oil. The official storage cover and running cover are also available, as separate purchases.

The Westinghouse WGen9500 versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen9500 compare to generators of similar power (between 9000 and 10000 W).

  • As for its weight, the Westinghouse WGen9500 weighs only 208 pounds, making it one of the lighter generators in the 9000-10000 rated wattage category. Regarding dry weight, one of the champions in the same power range is the Westinghouse iGen11000DFc, with a dry weight of only 187.4 lbs.
  • This generator has a somewhat average expected noise for its power range, rated at 74 dBA. If noise emissions are one of your priorities, you may be interested in the DuroMax XP11000iHT, one of the least noisy generators similarly powerful as this one, rated for 61 dBA.
  • Regarding its runtime, the WGen9500 operates for up to 12 hours at a 25% load, positioning it at the lower spectrum among comparable products. If you consider autonomy on a single full tank as one of the deciding factors, one of the generators in the same power range that offers the highest run time is the Westinghouse iGen12000TFc, with up to 19 hours.
  • Though run time is a significant parameter, it's closely tied to the generator's fuel tank size. To get a comprehensive understanding, fuel efficiency must also be taken into account. This generator is not fuel-efficient compared to devices of similar output: its estimated fuel consumption stands at 0.55 GPH at a 25% load. If you wish to acquire one of the most gasoline efficient products of this power range, the DuroMax XP11000iHT, with a fuel consumption of 0.39 GPH could be in your good books.

About Westinghouse

The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China and Vietnam.

Warranty Information

The Westinghouse WGen9500 is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.

Does it come with wheels and the battery. Does the battery charge as you run it. (Asked May 27, 2020)

The wheel kit and the battery are included. The generator does charge the battery when it runs. However, to ensure that the battery remains charged, the WGen9500 should be started every 2 to 3 months and run for a minimum of 15 minutes. Otherwise, you'll have to use a charger.

Westinghouse w gen9500 have propane hook up capability? (Asked August 08, 2020)

For propane operation, you'd be looking at the WGen9500DF, which is the dual fuel version.

Can you both Start AND Shut Off the generator with the remote (key FOB)? (Asked September 30, 2020)

Absolutely. The key fob has 2 buttons. One to start the unit, and one to stop it.

Is the width dimension of 26.5" with the wheels on? If not, what is that dimension? (Asked February 01, 2021)

This is the assembled width, so with the wheels.

Can the 30amp outlet be wired to one transfer switch and the 50amp outlet wired to a second transfer switch. (Asked May 22, 2021)

There's no reason why this should not be possible, as long as NEC is respected.

Does this really run up to 17.5hrs at 25% as stated on this page? All I see, even on the MFG website is 12 hours. Anyone successfully have it run that long? How was this calculated? (Asked June 15, 2021)

This was not calculated, since these are the official manufacturer specs at 25% load. The 12 hours mentioned on the MFG website are at 50% load. This information is also available in the spec table above.

Is there a dual fuel model like this that has the DC ports like the WGEN9500, even a different brand? (Asked July 15, 2022)

Please have a look at this list of dual fuel units with DC output and at least 9000 running watts.

Can I run two of the Westinghouse 9500df generators in parallel? (Asked December 28, 2022)

The unit is not parallel capable.

This 9500 watt generator powered my house for 2 days while waiting for power to be restored in Farwell, Michigan, in December, 2025. It ran flawlessly on propane for the entire time. Up to that time, it had not been run from brand new start up after purchase last summer. One of the better purchases that I have made. A power outage is not something that you want to have happen, especially at this time of year, but I do not have to worry about this anymore.

    + PROS:
    • It works fantastic! It starts right up with the remote start and it ready to work. I was advised to use propane since it wouldn't gum up the carburator.
    - CONS:
    • It is heavy, but once it's moved to where you want to set it up, it will probably stay there. With the folding handle and frame-mounted wheels, it is fairly easy to move around.

Received this generator a few months ago, the directions and assembly guides were easy to follow and setup was a breeze. The generator started right up in all three functions, instructions were very simple. Using propane to operate this unit is very safe and less of pain to use the fuel tank. Dual fuel operation makes it way easier to use. Had a transfer switch professionally installed on the house and connected the generator to ensure it would run essential appliances during a power outage, and it was successful. Both the house and the generator performed as expected. I feel confident that this unit will provide the power needed to keep us safe for future storms to come. I would definitely recommend this unit to all of my friends and family members .

    + PROS:
    • The generator performed well with no problems. Started up with little to no issues. House appliances operated efficiently with zero to no affects on the generator. Start up and assembly guides were easy to follow and setup. Overall, we are very satisfied with this purchase
    - CONS:
    • Did not attempt to turn on the house HVAC system due to concerns that it may put unnecessary loads on the generator.

This generator is not a good generator for real world use…would not Last a few months before the fixing starts…wildfire surviver.

    + PROS:
    • Well I have been running this generator in real world..we lost our home in a wildfire. We are in a 5th wheel..we been on generator for 2 years now..we have gone through genrac.westinghouse. the one that has not let us down yet is the DeWalt I have not yet changed anything on the DeWalt now for the westinghouse w9500 has been a problem all ways fixing..and for the genrac I thought that was a good one. Our old one got burned up in the wildfire..so I'm really not going to say I would buy another westinghouse..they are junk...in real world we need to run well 5th wheel. And stand the weather..and fuel efficiency..we run 24/7 7 days a week.
    - CONS:
    • Just plain junk....do not waste your time and money on this generator..it doesn't stand up...it says 50 amps it's not..we can only run one ac in 104 degrees the DeWalt can run both..it's only 30 amps..granted we can't run the well at the same time but the westinghouse can't ether..and it's big..so do your self a favor..don't waist your $$$$$

Very nice generator especially for the price. Super easy to set up and test. Quieter than expected. Cannot find a flaw on it. The only thing keeping me from going with 5 stars on the performance was the inability to source a Westinghouse Smart Switch which I specifically purchased this generator to work with. Home Depot, Amazon, Lowes, E-bay all sold out, no word on when it will come back in stock. Also created a case with Westinghouse January 3rd (10 days ago) regarding this issue and sent 2 more emails and haven’t heard a response yet.

    + PROS:
    • Very nice generator especially for the price. Super easy to set up and test. Quieter than expected. Set up for simple use with a 20A Westinghouse automatic transfer switch. Remote start. Comes with battery, charger, oil, funnel, full documentation.
    - CONS:
    • Cannot find a flaw with it anywhere except one big one: Cannot buy a Smart switch for it anywhere and still waiting for an answer from the Westinghouse Service Team after 10 days.
