Description

Zoom on the Westinghouse WGen9500

In a nutshell, the Westinghouse WGen9500 is a powerful portable generator mostly geared towards:

  • Food van owners and people participating in sporting competitions, open-air performances and outdoor festivals

In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability and any additional features of the device shall be discussed, including its emission compliance information.

Power & Run Time

The Westinghouse WGen9500 in use

The Westinghouse WGen9500

The Westinghouse WGen9500's core is the 457 cc (13.5 hp) Westinghouse OHV 4-stroke engine, which runs on gasoline. With an output of 120/240V, it provides a running wattage of 9500W and a peak wattage of 12500W.

At a noise rating of 73 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a shower), this generator can be started via a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included), or a simple traditional pull-start mechanism. Moreover, to offer you even more convenience, the WGen9500 can also be remotely started (key fob included).

The WGen9500 can operate for up to 17.5 hours with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.55 GPH), due to its fuel capacity of 6.6 gallons.

Since the WGen9500 has a somewhat high THD (<23%), it is advisable to not use it for the powering of sensitive electronic devices.

Several examples of what the generator may allow you to power simultaneously are:Note: All of these devices might not start simultaneously. Provided examples are based on a maximum load of 75 % and estimated wattages. With the help of our wattage calculator you can find out if this product suits your requirements.

Outlets

The control panel includes the following 6 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

In addition, it provides 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports allowing you to conveniently charge electronics such as mobile phones and tablets.

As it features a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the WGen9500 is transfer switch ready: in case of a power outage, you will be easily able to connect it to a breaker box and power your household.

Portability

The Westinghouse WGen9500 has the following dimensions: L27.2 x W26.5 x H26 in. In combination with its conventional, open frame design, they provide support and allow the generator to be raised above ground level. The device has been designed for tough environments and demanding outdoor use.

Even though this device may be technically portable (as in movable), manipulation and transportation without special equipment can be a challenge, as it weighs 192 pounds. Still, once it is on the ground, a wheel kit (⌀10") and a folding handle can easily solve the issue of low mobility and allow for easy relocation of the device.

Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, which makes it suitable for use in forested areas.

The Westinghouse WGen9500 versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen9500 compare to generators of similar power (between 9000 and 10000 W).

  • Weight-wise, the Westinghouse WGen9500 has only 220 lbs, which renders it one of the lighter generators which produce 9000 to 10000 rated watts. Regarding dry weight, one of the champions in the same power range is the Rainier R12000DF, with a dry weight of only 196 lbs.
  • With a lowest noise rating of 73 dBA, the generator is one of the more quiet of the generators of similar power. If noise emissions are important to you, one of the least noisy generators of this power range is the A-iPower SUA12000ED with only 69 dBA.
  • Since the WGen9500 boasts with a run time of 17.5 hours at 25% load, it can be safely judged as a device of a higher run time than most generators of a comparable output.
  • Even though run times are undoubtedly important, they are dependent on the fuel capacity to a large extent. For a more wholesome picture, we must take into consideration the fuel consumption of the generator At an estimated fuel consumption 0.38 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load, this generator is a rather fuel efficient one within its wattage category.

Price comparison

As you can see from this dynamic chart, when compared to other 9000-10000W generators, the Westinghouse WGen9500 is on the cheap side of the price range.

It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.

    About Westinghouse

The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators – which are the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, several sources report that they are in many cases manufactured in China.

    Warranty Information

The Westinghouse WGen9500 is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
For more information about the warranty of Westinghouse generators, please consult Westinghouse's warranty policies. Alternatively, you can also contact their Customer Support: 1-855-944-3571.
