Zoom on the Westinghouse WGen7500DF
In summary, the Westinghouse WGen7500DF is a portable generator especially useful for:
- Food truck owners who want to ensure that their business is fully self-contained and does not rely on potentially unreliable external power
- Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures
- Professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment
The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, the extra features it benefits from, and any relevant emission compliance details.
Power & Run Time
Thanks to its dual-fuel technology, the Westinghouse WGen7500DF delivers 120/240V and offers power and versatility. When gasoline-powered, it benefits from a running wattage of 7,500W and a peak wattage of 9,500W. When propane-powered, it has 6,750 rated watts and 8,550 peak watts.
At a noise rating of 72 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a shower), this generator can be started via a conventional pull-start mechanism, or a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included). Moreover, to offer you even more convenience, the WGen7500DF can also be remotely started (key fob included).
As for its running time, the WGen7500DF, along with its 6.6 gallons fuel capacity, can run for up to 16 hours with a full tank filled with gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.41 GPH). If propane is used, it can operate for up to 11 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.43 GPH).
Since the WGen7500DF has a high THD (<23%), it is advisable to not use it for the powering of sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel features the upcoming 5 AC outlets:
In addition, it provides 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports with which charging of electronics like mobile phones and tablets is made convenient.
As the WGen7500DF holds a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: you'll easily be able to connect it to your breaker box to power your home during a power outage.
Westinghouse's ST Switch Outlet

The ST Switch outlet
The WGen7500DF is what Westinghouse calls Smart Switch Ready. This means that it features a special outlet that allows for an automatic transfer of power in case of a power outage.
To benefit from this feature, you'll need the Westinghouse ST Switch (opens in a new tab), which is not included with the generator.
Simply put, the ST Switch is a cost-effective and versatile portable automatic transfer switch, which can be installed quickly and easily, without an electrician.
Plug the ST Switch into one of your household 120V outlets, plug your appliances to the ST Switch, and connect the WGen7500DF to the ST Switch via the special outlet and a 120V cord. The generator will automatically turn on when the power goes out, and automatically turn off when the power returns.
Portability
The Westinghouse WGen7500DF has a conventional, open frame design, of the following dimensions: L27.2 x W26.1 x H26 in, which offers support and allows it to be raised above ground level. The device has been designed for tough environments and demanding outdoor use.
Even though this device may be technically portable (as in movable), manipulation and transportation without special equipment can be a challenge, as it weighs 201 pounds. However, its challenging mobility is solved by its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle, which will ease its displacement, once it is on the floor.
Features
The WGen7500DF's control center features a convenient meter, which displays voltage, frequency and lifetime hours to aid you with the monitoring of its status and activity.
The generator includes a built-in fuel gauge, a quick, easy and convenient method of checking the device’s gas level.
Security-wise, this product benefits from an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), which gives you a complete peace of mind when using it.
With the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), letting you start the generator quickly, the Westinghouse WGen7500DF also comes with several accessories, including: battery charger, propane hose, oil, tool kit, key fob and funnel. The official storage cover and running cover are also available, as separate purchases.
Emissions
The Westinghouse WGen7500DF is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Thus, selling and purchasing this generator is allowed in each of the 50 states, including California.
Moreover, it features a spark arrestor and therefore, can be used in forested areas.

The Westinghouse WGen7500DF versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen7500DF compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 7000 and 8000 W).
- As its weight is 201 pounds, the Westinghouse WGen7500DF falls in the expected weight range of the dual fuel devices in the 7000-8000 rated wattage category. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the Sportsman GEN85KIDF, standing at just 133 lbs.
- The generator can be considered average in its noise for its type and power category, as it is rated at 72 dBA. If noise emissions are important to you, one of the least noisy generators of this power range is the Champion 201175 with only 61 dBA.
- As for its autonomy, the WGen7500DF, with an autonomy of up to 16 hours at a 25% load, is placed on the low end among the generators of its kind. If you consider autonomy on a single full tank as one of the deciding factors, one of the generators in the same power range that offers the highest run time is the DuroMax XP8500EH, with up to 25 hours.
- While the run time is an important parameter, it is dependent on the fuel tank’s capacity and thus, doesn’t say much on its own unless we consider fuel consumption as well. Compared to its peers, this generator is not exactly fuel efficient, compared to similarly powerful devices, with an estimated fuel consumption of 0.41 GPH at a 25% load. If you wish to further improve in the area of fuel efficiency, the DuroMax XP8500EH, which boasts with a gas consumption of only 0.32 GPH, may be the right generator for you.

About Westinghouse
The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China.
Warranty Information
The Westinghouse WGen7500DF is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.

User Reviews
I purchased this generator about 9 weeks ago. It runs great, easy to start and easy to move. It runs smooth with gas or propane. I have had three other generators of other brands. I give a 5 star across the board. I really like it and trust it will handle the load when needed. I tested it out several times with a load and runs perfect. You cant go wrong with this generator. This unit is not heavy, it is normal weight for a strong powered generator and moves easy.
Other than the noise it is a good product and reliable. I will say that it quite heavy so caution is needed when moving it over any rough surface.
