Description

Zoom on the Westinghouse WGen7500DF

In a nutshell, the Westinghouse WGen7500DF is a portable generator mostly geared towards:

  • Food truck owners who want to ensure that their business is fully self-contained and does not rely on potentially unreliable external power
  • Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
  • Professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment

In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed, including its emission compliance information.

Power & Run Time

The Westinghouse WGen7500DF in use

The Westinghouse WGen7500DF

Thanks to its dual-fuel technology, the Westinghouse WGen7500DF delivers 120/240V and offers power and versatility. When gasoline-powered, it benefits from a running wattage of 7,500W and a peak wattage of 9,500W. When propane-powered, it has 6,750 rated watts and 8,550 peak watts.

Enjoying a noise rating of 72 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a dishwasher), this generator can be started thanks to a simple traditional pull-start mechanism, but also to a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included). Moreover, to offer you even more convenience, the WGen7500DF can also be remotely started (key fob included).

With a fuel capacity of 6.6 gallons, the WGen7500DF can operate for up to 16 hours using gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.41 GPH), or for up to 11 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.43 GPH) using propane.

As the WGen7500DF has a high THD (<23%), it is not recommended to use it to power sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel provides the upcoming 5 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

Additionally, it features 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports with which you may charge electronics, for example mobile phones or tablets, conveniently.

Since the WGen7500DF bears a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: it is easily connectible to a breaker box and can power your home in case of a power outage.

Westinghouse's ST Switch Outlet

Picture of the ST Switch outlet

The ST Switch outlet

The WGen7500DF is what Westinghouse calls Smart Switch Ready. This means that it features a special outlet that allows for an automatic transfer of power in case of a power outage.

To benefit from this feature, you'll need the Westinghouse ST Switch (opens in a new tab), which is not included with the generator.

Simply put, the ST Switch is a cost-effective and versatile portable automatic transfer switch, which can be installed quickly and easily, without an electrician.

Plug the ST Switch into one of your household 120V outlets, plug your appliances to the ST Switch, and connect the WGen7500DF to the ST Switch via the special outlet and a 120V cord. The generator will automatically turn on when the power goes out, and automatically turn off when the power returns.

Portability

The Westinghouse WGen7500DF has a conventional, open frame design, of the following dimensions: L27.2 x W26.1 x H26 in, which offers support and allows it to be raised above ground level. The generator is designed for ideal use outdoors and in rough environments.

Even though this device may be technically portable (as in movable), manipulation and transportation without special equipment can be a challenge, as it weighs 201 pounds. However, this lack of maneuverability is compensated by its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle, with which you can conveniently shift it, once it's on the ground.

Features

Panel of the Westinghouse WGen7500DF

The WGen7500DF's control panel

The WGen7500DF's status and activity may be monitored conveniently via the control panel, as it features a convenient meter showing you voltage, frequency and lifetime hours.

The fuel level of the generator can be determined quickly, easily, and conveniently with the help of its built-in fuel gauge.

From a security standpoint, the product offers an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, allowing you to use it with a peace of mind.

Along the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), useful for starting the generator right away, the Westinghouse WGen7500DF's package also includes these accessories: funnel, battery charger, tool kit, key fob, oil and propane hose. The official storage cover and running cover are also available, as separate purchases.

Emissions

The Westinghouse WGen7500DF is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Thus, selling and purchasing this generator is allowed in each of the 50 states, including California.

Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, which makes it suitable for use in forested areas.

The Westinghouse WGen7500DF versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen7500DF compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 7000 and 8000 W).

  • Having a dry weight of 201 lbs, the Westinghouse WGen7500DF belongs in the expected weight range for dual fuel generators which produce 7000 to 8000 rated watts. If weight matters to you, one of the champions in this power range is the Sportsman GEN85KIDF with only 133 pounds.
  • As this generator can emit noise as low as 72 dBA, it finds itself in the average expected noise for this kind of power. For those who are looking for a less noisy device, we suggest the Champion 201175. With just 61 dBA, it is one of the most quiet devices in this power range.
  • Regarding its autonomy, the autonomy of the WGen7500DF, reaching up to 16 hours at a 25% load, can be considered as low end, compared to other dual fuel products of a roughly equal output. If you consider autonomy on a single full tank as one of the deciding factors, one of the generators in the same power range that offers the highest run time is the DuroMax XP8500EH, with up to 25 hours.
  • Autonomy holds its importance, however, it is largely dependent on the generator’s fuel capacity and so, it is nonsensible to discuss it without mentioning fuel efficiency as well. This generator is somewhat less fuel efficient than devices of comparable output: its estimated fuel consumption reaches 0.41 GPH at a 25% load. If you are concerned with gasoline efficiency, having a fuel consumption of just 0.32 GPH, the DuroMax XP8500EH is a device you could look out for.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 7000-8000W dual fuel generators, the Westinghouse WGen7500DF is on the cheap side of the price range.

It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.

About Westinghouse

The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China.

Warranty Information

The Westinghouse WGen7500DF is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.

I purchased this generator about 9 weeks ago. It runs great, easy to start and easy to move. It runs smooth with gas or propane. I have had three other generators of other brands. I give a 5 star across the board. I really like it and trust it will handle the load when needed. I tested it out several times with a load and runs perfect. You cant go wrong with this generator. This unit is not heavy, it is normal weight for a strong powered generator and moves easy.

    + PROS:
    • Runs great and easy to starts. Very nice quality I trust this brand and the reviews have been strong.. Very quiet for a generator.

Other than the noise it is a good product and reliable. I will say that it quite heavy so caution is needed when moving it over any rough surface.

    + PROS:
    • Electric start is welcome addition
    - CONS:
    • Heavy to move on non paved surfaces
