Description
Zoom on the Westinghouse WGen7500c
The Westinghouse WGen7500c is the newer version of the reliable WGen7500. It's a portable generator mostly geared towards:
- Food van owners who know that just a short power outage could lose them hundreds of dollars
- Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials
- Professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment
In the following paragraphs, we shall explore the power characteristics, available outlets, portability, and any additional features of the device.
Power & Run Time
The Westinghouse WGen7500c's design includes a gasoline-fueled 420 cc Westinghouse OHV 4-stroke engine. With a 120/240V output, it gives a running wattage of 7,500W and also a peak wattage of 9,500W.
Enjoying a noise rating of 72 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a vacuum cleaner), this generator can be started thanks to a standard recoil pull-rope starting mechanism, but also to a convenient and efficient electric starter (battery included). Additionally, the WGen7500c may be remotely started, enhancing user convenience (key fob included).
Featuring a 6.6 gallons fuel tank, the WGen7500c can provide power for up to 16 hours on a full tank (with fuel consumption averaging 0.41 gallons per hour).
The powering of sensitive electronic devices with the WGen7500c is not recommended due to its high THD (<23%).
Outlets
The control panel features 5 AC outlets as follows:
Since it features a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the WGen7500c is tailored to be transfer switch ready, making it easy to connect it to your breaker box for home power support during outages.
Westinghouse's ST Switch Outlet
The WGen7500c is what Westinghouse calls Smart Switch Ready. This means that it features a special outlet that allows for an automatic transfer of power in case of a power outage.
To benefit from this feature, you'll need the Westinghouse ST Switch (opens in a new tab), which is not included with the generator.
Simply put, the ST Switch is a cost-effective and versatile portable automatic transfer switch, which can be installed quickly and easily, without an electrician.
Plug the ST Switch into one of your household 120V outlets, plug your appliances to the ST Switch, and connect the WGen7500c to the ST Switch via the special outlet and a 120V cord. The generator will automatically turn on when the power goes out, and automatically turn off when the power returns.
Portability
With dimensions of L27.2 x W26.1 x H26 in, the traditional open frame design of the Westinghouse WGen7500c ensures stability while allowing easy maintenance access to components and promoting effective air cooling. The device has been designed for tough environments and demanding outdoor use.
While weighing 197.1 lbs, the generator is classified as 'portable,' indicating its mobility, albeit its heftiness may limit portability in specific situations. Still, once it is on the ground, its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle can easily solve the issue of low mobility and allow for easy relocation of the device.
Features
Included in the control panel of the WGen7500c are a convenient meter, showing voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours metrics, essential for monitoring its status and activity.
The built-in fuel gauge of the generator ensures simple and quick gas level assessments.
As far as security is concerned, the generator comes with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, providing peace of mind during use.
It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.
While the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), helpful for starting the device promptly, come with the Westinghouse WGen7500c, the following accessories are also included: funnel, battery charger, oil, tool kit and key fob. The official storage cover and running cover are also available, as separate purchases.

The Westinghouse WGen7500c versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen7500c compare to generators of similar power (between 7000 and 8000 W).
- With a dry weight of 197.1 pounds, the Westinghouse WGen7500c finds itself in the expected weight range for generators able to produce between 7000 and 8000 rated watts. if you wish to prioritize weight, the Sportsman GEN85KIDF is one of the top contenders in its power category, weighing only 133 pounds.
- Given its rated noise level of 72 dBA, this generator aligns with the average expected noise rating for devices of similar power. If you’d prefer a less noisy device, one of the most quiet devices, which share the same power range with this one, is the Champion 201175, whose lowest noise levels reach just 61 dBA.
- At a 25% load, the WGen7500c offers up to 16 hours of runtime on a full tank, placing it within the average autonomy range among generators of similar power level. If concerned with autonomy, one of the products of a comparable power output, which offers the highest run time, is the DuroMax XP8500EH, boasting with up to 25 hours.
- Run time is crucial, but it heavily relies on the fuel tank's capacity. Thus, considering fuel efficiency alongside is essential. This generator reaches an estimated fuel consumption of 0.41 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 25% load, making it average, for the previously mentioned wattage range. If minimizing fuel usage is one of your key priorities, the Champion 201176 is one of the most efficient devices with similar power output, with a gasoline consumption of only 0.31 gallons per hour.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 7000-8000W generators, the Westinghouse WGen7500c is on the cheap side of the price range.
It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.

About Westinghouse
The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China.
Warranty Information
The Westinghouse WGen7500c is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
