Description

Zoom on the Westinghouse WGen7500c

The Westinghouse WGen7500c is the newer version of the reliable WGen7500. It's a portable generator mostly geared towards:

  • Food van owners who know that just a short power outage could lose them hundreds of dollars
  • Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials
  • Professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment

The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the extra features it benefits from.

Power & Run Time

The Westinghouse WGen7500c in use

The Westinghouse WGen7500c

The Westinghouse WGen7500c's core is the 420 cc Westinghouse OHV 4-stroke engine with cast iron sleeve, which runs on gasoline. With an output of 120/240V, it provides a running wattage of 7,500W and a peak wattage of 9,500W.

The generator, rated for a noise of 72 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a vacuum cleaner), provides flexibility in starting, offering both a classic hand-operated recoil starting mechanism and an easy-to-use and reliable electric starter (battery included). Furthermore, for added convenience, the WGen7500c offers remote starting capabilities (key fob included).

The WGen7500c's fuel tank, boasting 6.6 gallons, allows it to operate for up to 16 hours with a full tank (with an estimated fuel consumption of 0.41 GPH).

The WGen7500c is unsuitable for the powering of sensitive electronic devices due to its high THD (<23%).

Outlets

The control panel features the following 5 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

Since it features a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the WGen7500c is tailored to be transfer switch ready, making it easy to connect it to your breaker box for home power support during outages.

Westinghouse's ST Switch Outlet

Picture of the ST Switch outlet

The ST Switch outlet

The WGen7500c is what Westinghouse calls Smart Switch Ready. This means that it features a special outlet that allows for an automatic transfer of power in case of a power outage.

To benefit from this feature, you'll need the Westinghouse ST Switch (opens in a new tab), which is not included with the generator.

Simply put, the ST Switch is a cost-effective and versatile portable automatic transfer switch, which can be installed quickly and easily, without an electrician.

Plug the ST Switch into one of your household 120V outlets, plug your appliances to the ST Switch, and connect the WGen7500c to the ST Switch via the special outlet and a 120V cord. The generator will automatically turn on when the power goes out, and automatically turn off when the power returns.

Portability

Measuring L27.2 x W26.1 x H26 in, the classic open frame construction of the Westinghouse WGen7500c provides stability while enabling convenient maintenance access to components and adequate air cooling. The device has been designed for tough environments and demanding outdoor use.

While technically classified as 'portable' due to its ability to be moved, the 197.1 lbs of this generator may make manual lifting and transportation somewhat difficult. However, the constrained maneuverability is addressed with the assistance of its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle, allowing for easy shifting once the generator is placed on the ground.

Features

The WGen7500c's control panel

To facilitate status and activity monitoring, a convenient meter, which displays voltage, frequency and lifetime hours are embedded in the control panel of the WGen7500c.

Thanks to its built-in fuel gauge, the generator allows you to quickly, conveniently, and easily check the gas level at a glance.

From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, giving you a peace of mind during use.

It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.

Besides the classic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to get you promptly started, the Westinghouse WGen7500c also comes with some accessories: battery charger, key fob, funnel, oil and tool kit are included. The official storage cover and running cover are also available, as separate purchases.

The Westinghouse WGen7500c versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen7500c compare to generators of similar power (between 7000 and 8000 W).

  • Having a dry weight of 197.1 lbs, the Westinghouse WGen7500c belongs in the expected weight range for generators which produce 7000 to 8000 rated watts. If you are mindful of weight, the Genmax GM10500XiT is among the top contenders in this power range, with a dry weight of 123.5 pounds.
  • Since the generator's noise is rated at 72 dBA, it has the roughly average expected noise for a device of similar power. If you value reduced noise levels, the DuroMax XP9500iH could be worth considering. It's one of the quietest generators in its power range, rated at 61 dBA.
  • At a 25% load, the WGen7500c offers up to 16 hours of runtime on a full tank, placing it within the average autonomy range among generators of similar power level. If run time is one of your main concerns, the DuroMax XP10000EH could be worth looking at. It boasts one of the highest run times among units of comparable power, lasting up to 22 hours.
  • Run time is crucial, but it heavily relies on the fuel tank's capacity. Thus, considering fuel efficiency alongside is essential. As this generator uses an estimated 0.41 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 25% load, it finds itself in the average gasoline consumption range of similar products. If gasoline efficiency is at the top of your list, you may want to have a look at the Champion 201176, which has great fuel efficiency, with a gas consumption of only 0.31 gallons per hour.

About Westinghouse

The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China and Vietnam.

Warranty Information

The Westinghouse WGen7500c is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
