Description

Zoom on the Westinghouse WGen5300v

In a nutshell, the Westinghouse WGen5300v is a compact portable generator mostly geared towards:

  • RV travellers wishing to enhance their freedom and nomad lifestyle
  • Occasional participants of outdoor events, competitions, concerts and festivals
  • Food truck owners who want to ensure that their business is fully self-contained and does not rely on potentially unreliable external power
  • Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout

The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, the extra features it benefits from, and any relevant emission compliance details.

Power & Run Time

The Westinghouse WGen5300v in use

The Westinghouse WGen5300v

The Westinghouse WGen5300v's engine, 274 cc OHV 4-stroke, fueled by gasoline, can deliver 120/240V. It provides a running wattage of 5,300W and reaches a peak wattage of 6,600W.

At a noise rating of 68 dBA (less noisy than background music), the generator is started via a simple traditional pull-start mechanism.

With a full tank, the WGen5300v can operate for up to 14.5 hours (fuel consumption around 0.32 GPH), thanks to its fuel capacity of 4.7 gallons.

The quite high THD (<23%) of the WGen5300v makes it unsuitable for powering sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel features the following 4 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R)
120V 30A (TT-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

With its TT-30R receptacle (TT as in 'Travel Trailer'), this Westinghouse generator is RV Ready. In addition, as the WGen5300v holds a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: you'll easily be able to connect it to your breaker box to power your home during a power outage.

Portability

With its dimensions of L23.2 x W20.1 x H19.1 in, the conventional, open frame design of the Westinghouse WGen5300v offers stability and allows the generator to be raised above ground level. This type of design is ideal for tough environments and heavy outdoor use.

Since the generator weighs 132.5 lbs, it will be incredibly difficult to manually lift it and transport it, even though it is technically considered to 'be portable' (in the sense that it is movable). Nevertheless, it can still be moved quite conveniently with the help of its wheel kit and its folding handle, once it is placed on the ground.

The WGen5300v's control panel

The WGen5300v's control center features a convenient meter showing you voltage, frequency and lifetime hours to aid you with the monitoring of its status and activity.

The generator allows for a quick, easy and convenient assessment of its gas level, as it is equipped with a built-in fuel gauge.

From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, giving you a peace of mind during use.

Besides the classic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to get you promptly started, the Westinghouse WGen5300v also comes with some accessories: oil, funnel and tool kit are included. The official storage cover and running cover are also available, as separate purchases.

Emissions

The Westinghouse WGen5300v is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Thus, selling and purchasing this generator is allowed in each of the 50 states, including California.

Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, so it is adequate for use in forested areas.

The Westinghouse WGen5300v versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen5300v compare to generators of similar power (between 4500 and 5500 W).

  • As for its weight, the Westinghouse WGen5300v weighs only 132.5 pounds, making it one of the lighter generators in the 4500-5500 rated wattage category. If weight matters to you, one of the champions in this power range is the Champion 201238 with only 101.4 pounds.
  • As this generator can emit noise as low as 68 dBA, it finds itself in the average expected noise for this kind of power. If noise emissions are one of your priorities, you may be interested in the Honda EU7000iS, one of the least noisy generators similarly powerful as this one, rated for 52 dBA.
  • Autonomy-wise, with up to 14.5 hours on a full tank at a 25% load, the WGen5300v is on the low end when compared to other generators of a similar power output. Furthermore, considering the run times, one of the generators which have a roughly same power output, with the highest autonomy, is the DuroMax XP5500EH, as it provides up to 19 hours.
  • While the run time is an important parameter, it is dependent on the fuel tank's capacity and thus, doesn't say much on its own unless we consider fuel consumption as well. This generator is somewhat less fuel efficient than devices of comparable output: its estimated fuel consumption reaches 0.32 GPH at a 25% load. If you wish to further improve in the area of fuel efficiency, the DuroMax XP5500EH, which boasts with a gas consumption of only 0.21 GPH, may be the right generator for you.
According to our stats, the following comparison is pretty popular: Westinghouse WGen5300v vs Westinghouse WGen5300s.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 4500-5500W generators, the Westinghouse WGen5300v is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

About Westinghouse

The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China.

Warranty Information

The Westinghouse WGen5300v is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.

Is the generator hard to start? I worry my wife may have trouble starting if I am not around. (Asked August 13, 2021)

The WGen5300s has a recoil start only. If you're concerned about ease of starting, you may want to have a look at the WGen5300s, which is the same unit but with an additional electric start.
