Description
Zoom on the Westinghouse WGen5300sc
The Westinghouse WGen5300sc replaced the WGen5300s. It's a compact portable generator mostly geared towards:
- RV travellers who wish to upgrade their experience to another level
- People occasionally participating in sporting competitions, open-air performances and outdoor festivals
- Food truck owners who do not wish to see their business interrupted under any circumstances
- Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
Over the following sections, you'll uncover its power characteristics, the selection of outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it includes.
Power & Run Time
Westinghouse WGen5300sc runs on gasoline, powered by a 274 cc OHV 4-stroke engine with cast iron sleeve, delivering 120/240V, boasting a running wattage of 5,300W alongside a starting wattage of 6,600W.
At a noise rating of 68 dBA (less noisy than background music), this generator can be started via a manual recoil starter system, or a straightforward and intuitive electric starter (battery included).
The WGen5300sc's fuel tank, boasting 4.7 gallons, allows it to operate for up to 14.5 hours with a full tank (with an estimated fuel consumption of 0.32 GPH).
The quite high THD (<23%) of the WGen5300sc makes it unsuitable for powering sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel includes the following 4 AC outlets:
With its TT-30R receptacle (TT standing for 'Travel Trailer'), this Westinghouse generator is RV Ready, perfectly suited for powering recreational vehicles. In addition, as the WGen5300sc holds a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: you'll easily be able to connect it to your breaker box to power your home during a power outage.
Portability
At L23.2 x W20.1 x H19.1 in, the standard open frame design of the Westinghouse WGen5300sc delivers stability alongside easy maintenance access to components and good air cooling. This type of design is ideal for tough environments and heavy outdoor use.
Although this generator is technically considered 'portable' (in the sense that it can be moved), its 133.8 lbs make it incredibly difficult to manually lift and transport. However, the limited maneuverability is remedied with its wheel kit and its folding handle, facilitating convenient shifting once the generator is positioned on the ground.
Features
To facilitate status and activity monitoring, a convenient meter showing you voltage, frequency and lifetime hours are embedded in the control panel of the WGen5300sc.
Featuring a built-in fuel gauge, the generator offers quick, convenient, and easy gas level checks at a glance.
As far as security is concerned, the generator comes with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), providing peace of mind during use.
It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.
Alongside the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) for quick setup, the Westinghouse WGen5300sc is bundled with additional accessories: oil, funnel and tool kit. The official storage cover and running cover are also available, as separate purchases.

The Westinghouse WGen5300sc versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen5300sc compare to generators of similar power (between 4500 and 5500 W).
- As for its weight, the Westinghouse WGen5300sc weighs only 133.8 pounds, making it one of the lighter generators in the 4500-5500 rated wattage category. Regarding dry weight, one of the champions in the same power range is the Pulsar PGX60BiSRCO, with a dry weight of only 93.5 lbs.
- Since the generator's noise is rated at 68 dBA, it has the roughly average expected noise for a device of similar power. If noise emissions are important to you, one of the least noisy generators of this power range is the Honda EU7000iS with only 52 dBA.
- At a 25% load, the WGen5300sc's up to 14.5 hours of runtime on a full tank fall within the average autonomy range for similarly powerful generators. If concerned with autonomy, one of the products of a comparable power output, which offers the highest run time, is the DuroMax XP5500HX, boasting with up to 19 hours.
- Run time is a key metric, but it's dependent on the generator's fuel capacity. Therefore, discussing fuel efficiency is necessary to get the full picture. In terms of fuel efficiency within its wattage range, this generator falls short: it consumes approximately 0.32 GPH at a 25% load. If not satisfied with the afore-mentioned fuel consumption, you may wish to check out the DuroMax XP7000iHT. With a fuel consumption of as little as 0.19 GPH, it is one of the most efficient generators currently on the market.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 4500-5500W generators, the Westinghouse WGen5300sc is on the cheap side of the price range.
It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.
The bottom line
- Inexpensive
- CO sensor
- RV Ready
- Electric start
- Lightweight for its kind (133.8 lbs)
- Acceptable noise (68 dBA)
- Decent run time
- No remote start
- Low fuel efficiency

About Westinghouse
The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China and Vietnam.
Warranty Information
The Westinghouse WGen5300sc is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
