Description

Zoom on the Westinghouse WGen5300sc

The Westinghouse WGen5300sc is the newer version of the WGen5300s. It's a compact portable generator mostly geared towards:

  • RV travellers who wish to upgrade their experience to another level
  • Occasional participants of outdoor events, competitions, concerts and festivals
  • Food truck owners who do not wish to see their business interrupted under any circumstances
  • Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials

The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the extra features it benefits from.

Power & Run Time

The Westinghouse WGen5300sc in use

The Westinghouse WGen5300sc

The Westinghouse WGen5300sc's design includes a gasoline-fueled 274 cc OHV 4-stroke engine. With a 120/240V output, it gives a running wattage of 5,300W and also a peak wattage of 6,600W.

At a noise rating of 68 dBA (less noisy than a normal conversation), this generator provides the choice between a traditional recoil pull-start mechanism or an easy-to-use and reliable electric starter (battery included) for starting.

The WGen5300sc boasts a fuel tank capable of holding 4.7 gallons, allowing it to run continuously for up to 14.5 hours (with fuel usage averaging around 0.32 gallons per hour).

As the WGen5300sc has a high THD (<23%), it is not recommended to use it to power sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel is equipped with the following 4 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R)
120V 30A (TT-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

Equipped with a TT-30R receptacle (TT representing 'Travel Trailer'), this Westinghouse generator is RV Ready, ensuring compatibility with recreational vehicles. In addition, as the WGen5300sc holds a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: you'll easily be able to connect it to your breaker box to power your home during a power outage.

Portability

Measuring L23.2 x W20.1 x H19.1 in, the classic open frame build of the Westinghouse WGen5300sc delivers stability and easy maintenance access to components, facilitating air circulation. The featured design is ideal for the outdoors and all tough environments.

Although this generator is technically considered 'portable' (in the sense that it can be moved), its 133.8 lbs make it incredibly difficult to manually lift and transport. However, the constrained maneuverability is addressed with the assistance of its wheel kit and its folding handle, allowing for easy shifting once the generator is placed on the ground.

Features

The WGen5300sc's control panel

For convenient monitoring of its status and activity, the control panel of the WGen5300sc includes a convenient meter, showing voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours metrics.

The generator includes a built-in fuel gauge, a quick, easy and convenient method of checking the device’s gas level.

As far as security is concerned, the generator can be used with a peace of mind, as it features an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker).

It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.

Besides the classic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to get you promptly started, the Westinghouse WGen5300sc also comes with some accessories: tool kit, funnel and oil are included. The official storage cover and running cover are also available, as separate purchases.

The Westinghouse WGen5300sc versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen5300sc compare to generators of similar power (between 4500 and 5500 W).

  • When it comes to weight, the Westinghouse WGen5300sc tips the scales at just 133.8 pounds, making it one of the lighter generators in the 4500 to 5500 rated wattage range. if you wish to prioritize weight, the Champion 201238 is one of the top contenders in its power category, weighing only 101.4 pounds.
  • As this generator can emit noise as low as 68 dBA, it finds itself in the average expected noise for this kind of power. If you wish to prioritize minimal noise, the Honda EU7000iS stands out as one of the quietest options among generators of similar power, with a rating of 52 dBA.
  • Regarding its autonomy, the autonomy of the WGen5300sc, reaching up to 14.5 hours at a 25% load, can be considered as low end, compared to other products of a roughly equal output. For those prioritizing autonomy, the DuroMax XP5500EH could be considered, as it offers one of the longest run times among generators with similar power output, reaching up to 19 hours.
  • Run times are important, yet thanks to their dependence on the fuel capacity, they should be judged along with the fuel consumption of the device. This generator is not fuel-efficient compared to devices of similar output: its estimated fuel consumption stands at 0.32 GPH at a 25% load. To prioritize fuel savings, we advise considering the DuroMax XP7000iH, which stands out for its gasoline efficiency, consuming just 0.19 gallons per hour.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 4500-5500W generators, the Westinghouse WGen5300sc is on the cheap side of the price range.

It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.

About Westinghouse

The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China.

Warranty Information

The Westinghouse WGen5300sc is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
For more information about the warranty of Westinghouse generators, please consult Westinghouse's warranty policies (opens in a new tab). Alternatively, you can also contact their Customer Support: 1-855-944-3571.

Is it safe for sensitive equipment, if it is supplying energy through a transfer switch? (Asked March 12, 2024)

The unit has a THD <23%, which can't be considered safe for AC equipment with sensitive electronics. A transfer switch won't rectify waveform.
