Description
Zoom on the Westinghouse WGen5300sc
The Westinghouse WGen5300sc is the newer version of the WGen5300s. It's a compact portable generator mostly geared towards:
- RV travellers who wish to upgrade their experience to another level
- Occasional participants of outdoor events, competitions, concerts and festivals
- Food truck owners who do not wish to see their business interrupted under any circumstances
- Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials
The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the extra features it benefits from.
Power & Run Time
The Westinghouse WGen5300sc's design includes a gasoline-fueled 274 cc OHV 4-stroke engine. With a 120/240V output, it gives a running wattage of 5,300W and also a peak wattage of 6,600W.
At a noise rating of 68 dBA (less noisy than a normal conversation), this generator provides the choice between a traditional recoil pull-start mechanism or an easy-to-use and reliable electric starter (battery included) for starting.
The WGen5300sc boasts a fuel tank capable of holding 4.7 gallons, allowing it to run continuously for up to 14.5 hours (with fuel usage averaging around 0.32 gallons per hour).
As the WGen5300sc has a high THD (<23%), it is not recommended to use it to power sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel is equipped with the following 4 AC outlets:
Equipped with a TT-30R receptacle (TT representing 'Travel Trailer'), this Westinghouse generator is RV Ready, ensuring compatibility with recreational vehicles. In addition, as the WGen5300sc holds a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: you'll easily be able to connect it to your breaker box to power your home during a power outage.
Portability
Measuring L23.2 x W20.1 x H19.1 in, the classic open frame build of the Westinghouse WGen5300sc delivers stability and easy maintenance access to components, facilitating air circulation. The featured design is ideal for the outdoors and all tough environments.
Although this generator is technically considered 'portable' (in the sense that it can be moved), its 133.8 lbs make it incredibly difficult to manually lift and transport. However, the constrained maneuverability is addressed with the assistance of its wheel kit and its folding handle, allowing for easy shifting once the generator is placed on the ground.
Features
For convenient monitoring of its status and activity, the control panel of the WGen5300sc includes a convenient meter, showing voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours metrics.
The generator includes a built-in fuel gauge, a quick, easy and convenient method of checking the device’s gas level.
As far as security is concerned, the generator can be used with a peace of mind, as it features an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker).
It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.
Besides the classic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to get you promptly started, the Westinghouse WGen5300sc also comes with some accessories: tool kit, funnel and oil are included. The official storage cover and running cover are also available, as separate purchases.

The Westinghouse WGen5300sc versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen5300sc compare to generators of similar power (between 4500 and 5500 W).
- In terms of its weight, the Westinghouse WGen5300sc weighs merely 133.8 pounds, earning it a spot among the lighter generators within the 4500 to 5500 rated wattage category. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the Champion 201238, standing at just 101.4 lbs.
- The generator's noise output, rated at 68 dBA, falls within the average range expected for devices in its power range. If you wish to prioritize minimal noise, the Honda EU7000iS stands out as one of the quietest options among generators of similar power, with a rating of 52 dBA.
- Regarding its runtime, the WGen5300sc operates for up to 14.5 hours at a 25% load, positioning it at the lower spectrum among comparable products. If autonomy is your priority, one of the devices of a similar power output with the highest run time is the DuroMax XP5500EH, reaching up to 19 hours.
- The run time is important, but also hugely depends on the capacity of the fuel tank and doesn't mean much if we don't talk about fuel consumption as well. This generator doesn't excel in fuel efficiency when compared to others of its kind: it consumes approximately 0.32 GPH at a 25% load. If you are concerned with gasoline efficiency, having a fuel consumption of just 0.19 GPH, the DuroMax XP7000iH is a device you could look out for.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 4500-5500W generators, the Westinghouse WGen5300sc is on the cheap side of the price range.
It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.
The bottom line
- Inexpensive
- CO Sensor
- Several accessories included
- RV Ready
- Electric start
- Lightweight for its kind (133.8 lbs)
- Acceptable noise (68 dBA)
- No remote start
- Relatively low run time
- Low fuel efficiency

About Westinghouse
The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China.
Warranty Information
The Westinghouse WGen5300sc is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
