Description
Zoom on the Westinghouse WGen5300sc
The Westinghouse WGen5300sc replaced the WGen5300s. It's a compact portable generator especially useful for:
- RV travellers looking for even more independence
- People occasionally participating in sporting competitions, open-air performances and outdoor festivals
- Food truck owners who want to ensure that their business is fully self-contained and does not rely on potentially unreliable external power
- Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the extra features it benefits from.
Power & Run Time
Running on gasoline, the Westinghouse WGen5300sc utilizes a 274 cc OHV 4-stroke engine with cast iron sleeve to deliver 120/240V, offering a running wattage of 5,300W and a starting wattage of 6,600W.
Featuring a noise rating of 68 dBA (less noisy than an office), the generator is equipped with both a traditional recoil pull-start mechanism and a convenient and efficient electric starter (battery included) for starting.
With its 4.7 gallons fuel tank, the WGen5300sc can operate for up to 14.5 hours when fully fueled (with fuel usage averaging around 0.32 GPH).
Due to the high THD (<23%) of the WGen5300sc, it is advised against using it for powering sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel features the following 4 AC outlets:
This Westinghouse generator is RV Ready, thanks to its TT-30R receptacle (TT stands for 'Travel Trailer'). In addition, with its twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the WGen5300sc is configured to be transfer switch ready, allowing straightforward connection to your breaker box to supply backup power to your home during outages.
Portability
With dimensions of L23.2 x W20.1 x H19.1 in, the standard open frame design of the Westinghouse WGen5300sc provides stability and easy maintenance access to components, as well as good air circulation. The generator is designed for outdoor use and demanding environments.
As the generator's weight is 133.8 pounds, manually moving it or transporting it may be challenging, despite the fact that it is technically considered 'portable' (movable). However, the lack of maneuverability can be offset with its wheel kit and its folding handle, which allows for convenient shifting once the generator is placed on the ground.
Features
Included in the control panel of the WGen5300sc are a convenient meter, which displays voltage, frequency and lifetime hours, essential for monitoring its status and activity.
A built-in fuel gauge allows for a quick, easy and convenient check of the fuel level of the generator.
From a security standpoint, the generator is furnished with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, ensuring peace of mind during operation.
It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.
Alongside the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) for quick setup, the Westinghouse WGen5300sc is bundled with additional accessories: oil, tool kit and funnel. The official storage cover and running cover are also available, as separate purchases.

The Westinghouse WGen5300sc versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen5300sc compare to generators of similar power (between 4500 and 5500 W).
- At a weight of 133.8 pounds, the Westinghouse WGen5300sc places in the expected weight range of the generators in the 4500-5500 rated wattage range. If weight is an important consideration for you, the Pulsar PGX60BiSRCO stands out as one of the top contenders in this power category, with a dry weight of 93.5 pounds.
- Since the generator's noise is rated at 68 dBA, it has the roughly average expected noise for a device of similar power. If you'd like a less noisy alternative, the Honda EU7000iS is a strong contender. It boasts a noise rating of 52 dBA, placing it among the quietest generators in its power category.
- At a 25% load, the WGen5300sc's up to 14.5 hours of runtime on a full tank fall within the average autonomy range for similarly powerful generators. If you wish to prioritize autonomy, the DuroMax XP5500EH shines as one of the top contenders, offering one of the highest run times among generators with similar power output, totaling up to 19 hours.
- While run time matters, it's heavily influenced by the fuel tank's capacity. Hence, it's important to consider fuel efficiency alongside. In terms of fuel efficiency within its wattage range, this generator falls short: it consumes approximately 0.32 GPH at a 25% load. If you're placing a high priority on fuel consumption, the DuroMax XP7000iHT, with a low fuel consumption rate of 0.19 GPH, could be an option to consider.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 4500-5500W generators, the Westinghouse WGen5300sc is on the cheap side of the price range.
It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.
The bottom line
- Inexpensive
- CO sensor
- RV Ready
- Electric start
- Decent weight (133.8 lbs)
- Acceptable noise (68 dBA)

About Westinghouse
The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China and Vietnam.
Warranty Information
The Westinghouse WGen5300sc is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
