Description
Zoom on the Westinghouse WGen5300DFc
The Westinghouse WGen5300DFc is the newer version of the WGen5300DF. It's a compact portable generator mostly geared towards:
- RV travellers looking for even more independence
- People occasionally participating in outdoor fairs, festivals or events
- Food van owners who know that just a short power outage could lose them hundreds of dollars
- Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures
In the upcoming sections, you'll discover its power characteristics, the array of outlets it presents, its overall portability, and the additional features it possesses.
Power & Run Time
The dual-fuel technology of the Westinghouse WGen5300DFc allows for an output of 120/240V and provides superb power and versatility. If gasoline-powered, the device provides a running wattage of 5,300W and a starting wattage of 6,600W. If propane-powered, it gives 4,800 rated watts and 5,900 starting watts.
With a noise rating of 68 dBA (less noisy than a normal conversation), the generator features a simple traditional pull-start mechanism, but also a convenient and efficient electric starter (battery included). Furthermore, the WGen5300DFc can be remotely started, providing users with added ease of use (key fob included).
In terms of running time, the WGen5300DFc, equipped with a 4.7 gallons fuel tank, is capable of running continuously for around 11 hours at 50% load on a full gasoline tank (with fuel consumption estimated at around 0.43 gallons per hour). When utilizing propane, it provides around 9 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.52 GPH) of operation.
The WGen5300DFc is unsuitable for the powering of sensitive electronic devices due to its high THD (<23%).
Outlets
The control panel provides the upcoming 4 AC outlets:
This Westinghouse generator is RV Ready, as it features a TT-30R receptacle (TT stands for 'Travel Trailer'). In addition, because the WGen5300DFc is equipped with a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: it can power your home during a power outage, as it can be easily connected to your breaker box to power your household.
Westinghouse's ST Switch Outlet

The ST Switch outlet
The WGen5300DFc is what Westinghouse calls Smart Switch Ready. This means that it features a special outlet that allows for an automatic transfer of power in case of a power outage.
To benefit from this feature, you'll need the Westinghouse ST Switch (opens in a new tab), which is not included with the generator.
Simply put, the ST Switch is a cost-effective and versatile portable automatic transfer switch, which can be installed quickly and easily, without an electrician.
Plug the ST Switch into one of your household 120V outlets, plug your appliances to the ST Switch, and connect the WGen5300DFc to the ST Switch via the special outlet and a 120V cord. The generator will automatically turn on when the power goes out, and automatically turn off when the power returns.
Portability
At L23.4 x W20.6 x H19.5 in, the Westinghouse WGen5300DFc boasts a traditional open frame structure, ensuring stability and allowing for convenient maintenance access to components, promoting air circulation. The featured design is ideal for the outdoors and all tough environments.
Since the generator weighs 135.6 lbs, it will be incredibly difficult to manually lift it and transport it, even though it is technically considered to 'be portable' (in the sense that it is movable). To improve the generator's mobility, you may want to consider acquiring the official wheel kit (opens in a new tab).
Features
The built-in fuel gauge of the generator ensures simple and quick gas level assessments.
As far as security is concerned, the generator comes with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, providing peace of mind during use.
It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.
While the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), helpful for starting the device promptly, come with the Westinghouse WGen5300DFc, the following accessories are also included: key fob, funnel, tool kit, battery charger, oil and propane hose. An official running cover is also available, as a separate purchase.

The Westinghouse WGen5300DFc versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen5300DFc compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 4500 and 5500 W).
- Weighing in at 135.6 lbs, the Westinghouse WGen5300DFc fits within the expected weight range for dual fuel devices producing 4500 to 5500 rated watts. Weight-conscious users may find the WEN DF680iX appealing, as it is one of the top contenders in this power range, weighing just 94.8 pounds.
- With a lowest noise rating of 68 dBA, the generator is one of the more quiet of the generators of similar type and power. If you value reduced noise levels, the DuroMax XP7000iH could be worth considering. It's one of the quietest generators in its power range, rated at 62 dBA.
- At 50% load, the WGen5300DFc boasts a higher run time than most similarly powerful dual fuel products, reaching around 11 hours. If run time is one of your main concerns, the WEN DF5600X could be worth looking at. It boasts one of the highest run times among units of comparable power, lasting around 12.5 hours.
- While the run time is an important parameter, it is dependent on the fuel tank's capacity and thus, doesn't say much on its own unless we consider fuel consumption as well. This generator, with an estimated fuel consumption of just 0.43 GPH (gallon per hour) at 50% load, is one of the more fuel-efficient generators, for the previously mentioned wattage range. If you're placing a high priority on fuel consumption, the WEN DF5600X, with a low fuel consumption rate of 0.35 GPH, could be an option to consider.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 4500-5500W dual fuel generators, the Westinghouse WGen5300DFc is on the average side of the price range.
Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

About Westinghouse
The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China.
Warranty Information
The Westinghouse WGen5300DFc is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
