Description

Zoom on the Westinghouse WGen5300DFc

The Westinghouse WGen5300DFc replaced the WGen5300DF. It's a compact portable generator mostly geared towards:

  • RV travellers wishing to enhance their freedom and nomad lifestyle
  • People occasionally participating in sporting competitions, open-air performances and outdoor festivals
  • Food van owners who know that just a short power outage could lose them hundreds of dollars
  • Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials

In the upcoming sections, you'll discover its power characteristics, the array of outlets it presents, its overall portability, and the additional features it possesses.

Power & Run Time

Thanks to its dual-fuel technology, the Westinghouse WGen5300DFc delivers 120/240V and offers power and versatility. When gasoline-powered, it benefits from a running wattage of 5,300W and a peak wattage of 6,600W. When propane-powered, it has 4,800 rated watts and 5,900 peak watts.

Featuring a noise rating of 68 dBA (less noisy than an office), the generator is equipped with both a conventional pull-start mechanism and a no-fuss and convenient electric starter (battery included) for starting. Moreover, the WGen5300DFc boasts remote starting functionality, adding another layer of convenience (key fob included).

As for its running time, the WGen5300DFc, along with its 4.7 gallons fuel capacity, can run for around 11 hours at 50% load with a full tank filled with gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.43 GPH). If propane is used, it can operate for around 9 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.52 GPH).

As the WGen5300DFc has a high THD (<23%), it is not recommended to use it to power sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel is equipped with the following 4 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R)
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120V 30A (TT-30R) receptacle

This Westinghouse generator is RV Ready, as it features a TT-30R receptacle (TT stands for 'Travel Trailer'). In addition, as the WGen5300DFc holds a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: you'll easily be able to connect it to your breaker box to power your home during a power outage.

Westinghouse's ST Switch Outlet

Picture of the ST Switch outlet

The ST Switch outlet

The WGen5300DFc is what Westinghouse calls Smart Switch Ready. This means that it features a special outlet that allows for an automatic transfer of power in case of a power outage.

To benefit from this feature, you'll need the Westinghouse ST Switch (opens in a new tab), which is not included with the generator.

Simply put, the ST Switch is a cost-effective and versatile portable automatic transfer switch, which can be installed quickly and easily, without an electrician.

Plug the ST Switch into one of your household 120V outlets, plug your appliances to the ST Switch, and connect the WGen5300DFc to the ST Switch via the special outlet and a 120V cord. The generator will automatically turn on when the power goes out, and automatically turn off when the power returns.

Portability

Measuring L23.4 x W20.6 x H19.5 in, the classic open frame build of the Westinghouse WGen5300DFc delivers stability and easy maintenance access to components, facilitating air circulation. The featured design is ideal for the outdoors and all tough environments.

Despite its weight of 135.6 lbs, the generator is still considered 'portable,' meaning it is movable, although its heftiness may restrict portability in certain environments or require additional considerations for transportation and setup. Considering the purchase of the official wheel kit (opens in a new tab) can significantly improve the generator's mobility.

Features

The WGen5300DFc's control panel

Equipped with a built-in fuel gauge, the generator facilitates swift gas level checks.

From a security standpoint, the product offers an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), allowing you to use it with a peace of mind.

It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.

With the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), letting you start the generator quickly, the Westinghouse WGen5300DFc also comes with several accessories, including: propane hose, funnel, oil, key fob, battery charger and tool kit. An official running cover is also available, as a separate purchase.

The Westinghouse WGen5300DFc versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen5300DFc compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 4500 and 5500 W).

  • At 135.6 lbs dry, the Westinghouse WGen5300DFc is consistent with the standard weight profile for dual fuel devices ranging from 4500 to 5500 rated watts. If weight is your top priority, one of the champions in this power category is the Pulsar PGX60BiSRCO, weighing just 93.5 pounds.
  • This generator offers a rated noise level of 68 dBA, placing it among the quieter alternatives in its type and power category. If you’d prefer a less noisy device, one of the most quiet devices, which share the same power range with this one, is the DuroMax XP7000iH, whose lowest noise levels reach just 62 dBA.
  • At 50% load, the WGen5300DFc boasts a higher run time than most similarly powerful dual fuel products, reaching around 11 hours. If you consider autonomy on a single full tank as one of the deciding factors, one of the generators in the same power range that offers the highest run time is the WEN DF5600X, with around 12.5 hours.
  • Autonomy holds its importance, however, it is largely dependent on the generator’s fuel capacity and so, it is nonsensible to discuss it without mentioning fuel efficiency as well. This generator, with an estimated fuel consumption of just 0.43 GPH (gallon per hour) at 50% load, is one of the more fuel-efficient generators, for the previously mentioned wattage range. If you wish to further improve in the area of fuel efficiency, the WEN DF5600X, which boasts with a gas consumption of only 0.35 GPH, may be the right generator for you.
According to our stats, the following comparison is pretty popular: Westinghouse WGen5300DFc vs Westinghouse WGen5300DFcv.

About Westinghouse

The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China and Vietnam.

Warranty Information

The Westinghouse WGen5300DFc is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
