Description
Zoom on the Westinghouse WGen5300cv
The Westinghouse WGen5300cv replaced the WGen5300v. It's a compact portable generator mostly geared towards:
- RV travellers looking for even more independence
- People occasionally participating in outdoor fairs, festivals or events
- Food truck owners who want to ensure that their business is fully self-contained and does not rely on potentially unreliable external power
- Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures
In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed.
Power & Run Time
The Westinghouse WGen5300cv's core is the 274 cc OHV 4-stroke engine with cast iron sleeve, which runs on gasoline. With an output of 120/240V, it provides a running wattage of 5,300W and a peak wattage of 6,600W.
With a noise rating of 68 dBA (less noisy than an office), the generator's starting mechanism is centered around a manual recoil starter system.
Equipped with a 4.7 gallons fuel tank, the WGen5300cv ensures continuous operation for up to 14.5 hours with a full tank (fuel usage approximately 0.32 gallons per hour).
As the WGen5300cv exhibits a THD of less than 23%, which is high, it is best avoided for powering sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel is equipped with the following 4 AC outlets:
The inclusion of a TT-30R receptacle (TT for 'Travel Trailer') makes this Westinghouse generator RV Ready, ideal for providing power to recreational vehicles. In addition, with its twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the WGen5300cv is designed to be transfer switch ready, allowing easy connection to your breaker box for powering your home during a blackout.
Portability
With its L23.2 x W20.1 x H19.1 in dimensions, the open frame structure of the Westinghouse WGen5300cv provides stability, simplified maintenance access to components, and better air cooling than enclosed units. The featured design is ideal for the outdoors and all tough environments.
Despite its weight of 133.6 lbs, the generator is still considered 'portable,' meaning it is movable, although its heftiness may restrict portability in certain environments or require additional considerations for transportation and setup. However, its challenging mobility is solved by its wheel kit and its folding handle, which will ease its displacement, once it is on the floor.
Features
The WGen5300cv's control center features a convenient meter, which displays voltage, frequency and lifetime hours to aid you with the monitoring of its status and activity.
The built-in fuel gauge of the generator ensures simple and quick gas level assessments.
From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), giving you a peace of mind during use.
It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.
Apart from the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to facilitate setup, the Westinghouse WGen5300cv features extra accessories: oil, tool kit and funnel. The official storage cover and running cover are also available, as separate purchases.

The Westinghouse WGen5300cv versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen5300cv compare to generators of similar power (between 4500 and 5500 W).
- In terms of its dry weight, the Westinghouse WGen5300cv stands at only 133.6 lbs, meaning that is one of the lighter devices of the 4500-5500 rated wattage category If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the Pulsar PGX60BiSRCO, with a dry weight of just 93.5 pounds.
- As this generator can emit noise as low as 68 dBA, it finds itself in the average expected noise for this kind of power. If noise emissions are one of your priorities, you may be interested in the Honda EU7000iS, one of the least noisy generators similarly powerful as this one, rated for 52 dBA.
- Given that the WGen5300cv reaches an autonomy of up to 14.5 hours with a full tank and at 25% load, it is placed within the average autonomy range of similarly powerful generators. If prolonged run time is essential to your needs, you could consider the DuroMax XP5500EH, which offers one of the highest autonomy among devices with similar power output, lasting up to 19 hours.
- Run time is a key metric, but it's dependent on the generator's fuel capacity. Therefore, discussing fuel efficiency is necessary to get the full picture. This generator is rather wasteful, compared to other devices within the aforementioned output range, when it comes to gasoline consumption, as it reaches roughly 0.32 GPH at a 25% load. If you wish to further improve in the area of fuel efficiency, the DuroMax XP7000iHT, which boasts with a gas consumption of only 0.19 GPH, may be the right generator for you.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 4500-5500W generators, the Westinghouse WGen5300cv is on the cheap side of the price range.
It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.
The bottom line
- Inexpensive
- CO sensor
- RV Ready
- Lightweight for its kind (133.6 lbs)
- Acceptable noise (68 dBA)
- Decent run time
- No electric start
- Low fuel efficiency

About Westinghouse
The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China and Vietnam.
Warranty Information
The Westinghouse WGen5300cv is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
