Description
Zoom on the Westinghouse WGen5300cv
The Westinghouse WGen5300cv replaced the WGen5300v. It's a compact portable generator especially useful for:
- RV travellers who wish to upgrade their experience to another level
- People occasionally participating in sporting competitions, open-air performances and outdoor festivals
- Food truck owners who do not wish to see their business interrupted under any circumstances
- Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials
In the forthcoming sections, you'll delve into its power characteristics, the various outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the additional features it boasts.
Power & Run Time
The Westinghouse WGen5300cv houses a 274 cc OHV 4-stroke engine with cast iron sleeve, which provides 120/240V, consumes gasoline and delivers a running wattage of 5,300W along with a peak wattage of 6,600W.
The generator features a traditional recoil pull-start mechanism. It is rated for a noise of 68 dBA (less noisy than background music).
With a fuel capacity of 4.7 gallons, the WGen5300cv can run for up to 14.5 hours when the tank is full (fuel consumption is approximately 0.32 gallons per hour).
The WGen5300cv is unsuitable for the powering of sensitive electronic devices due to its high THD (<23%).
Outlets
The control panel includes the following 4 AC outlets:
Equipped with a TT-30R receptacle (TT representing 'Travel Trailer'), this Westinghouse generator is RV Ready, ensuring compatibility with recreational vehicles. In addition, since it features a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the WGen5300cv is tailored to be transfer switch ready, making it easy to connect it to your breaker box for home power support during outages.
Portability
Measuring L23.2 x W20.1 x H19.1 in, the classic open frame build of the Westinghouse WGen5300cv delivers stability and easy maintenance access to components, facilitating air circulation. The design is ideal for rough environments and demanding outdoor use.
Even though this device may be technically portable (as in movable), manipulation and transportation without special equipment can be a challenge, as it weighs 133.6 pounds. Nevertheless, it can still be moved quite conveniently with the help of its wheel kit and its folding handle, once it is placed on the ground.
Features
To help you monitor the WGen5300cv's status and activity, its control panel is equipped with a convenient meter, offering voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours readings.
With its built-in fuel gauge, the generator provides quick and convenient gas level checks.
In terms of security, the generator features an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), ensuring peace of mind during its use.
It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.
In addition to the traditional documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to help you get started promptly, the Westinghouse WGen5300cv also includes several accessories: funnel, tool kit and oil. The official storage cover and running cover are also available, as separate purchases.

The Westinghouse WGen5300cv versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen5300cv compare to generators of similar power (between 4500 and 5500 W).
- Regarding its weight, the Westinghouse WGen5300cv only weighs in at 133.6 pounds, which means it's one of the lighter generators in the 4500-5500 rated wattage range. Weight-conscious users may find the Pulsar PGX60BiSRCO appealing, as it is one of the top contenders in this power range, weighing just 93.5 pounds.
- This generator has a somewhat average expected noise for its power range, rated at 68 dBA. If you'd like a less noisy alternative, the Honda EU7000iS is a strong contender. It boasts a noise rating of 52 dBA, placing it among the quietest generators in its power category.
- As the WGen5300cv offers up to 14.5 hours run time on a full tank at a 25% load, it falls within the average autonomy range among the generators of a similar power. If run time is one of your main concerns, the DuroMax XP5500HX could be worth looking at. It boasts one of the highest run times among units of comparable power, lasting up to 19 hours.
- The run time is important, but also hugely depends on the capacity of the fuel tank and doesn't mean much if we don't talk about fuel consumption as well. Among generators of similar output, this generator ranks somewhat poorly in fuel efficiency, with an estimated consumption of 0.32 GPH at a 25% load. If minimizing fuel usage is one of your key priorities, the DuroMax XP7000iHT is one of the most efficient devices with similar power output, with a gasoline consumption of only 0.19 gallons per hour.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 4500-5500W generators, the Westinghouse WGen5300cv is on the cheap side of the price range.
It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.
The bottom line
- Inexpensive
- CO sensor
- RV Ready
- Lightweight for its kind (133.6 lbs)
- Acceptable noise (68 dBA)
- Decent run time
- No electric start
- Low fuel efficiency

About Westinghouse
The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China and Vietnam.
Warranty Information
The Westinghouse WGen5300cv is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
