The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the extra features it benefits from.

Power & Run Time

The Westinghouse WGen5300c in use

The Westinghouse WGen5300c

Running on gasoline, the Westinghouse WGen5300c utilizes a 274 cc OHV 4-stroke engine with cast iron sleeve to deliver 120/240V, offering a running wattage of 5,300W and a starting wattage of 6,600W.

Enjoying a noise rating of 68 dBA (less noisy than background music), this generator offers the versatility of starting with either a traditional recoil pull-start mechanism or a hassle-free and practical electric starter (battery included). To add further convenience, the WGen5300c can be remotely started (key fob included).

With a fuel capacity of 4.7 gallons, the WGen5300c can run for around 11 hours at 50% load when the tank is full (fuel consumption is approximately 0.43 gallons per hour).

Considering its high Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of less than 23%, it is not recommended to rely on the WGen5300c for powering sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel features the upcoming 4 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R)
120V 30A (TT-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

With its TT-30R receptacle (TT standing for 'Travel Trailer'), this Westinghouse generator is RV Ready, perfectly suited for powering recreational vehicles. In addition, with its twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the WGen5300c is configured to be transfer switch ready, allowing straightforward connection to your breaker box to supply backup power to your home during outages.

Westinghouse's ST Switch Outlet

Picture of the ST Switch outlet

The ST Switch outlet

The WGen5300c is what Westinghouse calls Smart Switch Ready. This means that it features a special outlet that allows for an automatic transfer of power in case of a power outage.

To benefit from this feature, you'll need the Westinghouse ST Switch (opens in a new tab), which is not included with the generator.

Simply put, the ST Switch is a cost-effective and versatile portable automatic transfer switch, which can be installed quickly and easily, without an electrician.

Plug the ST Switch into one of your household 120V outlets, plug your appliances to the ST Switch, and connect the WGen5300c to the ST Switch via the special outlet and a 120V cord. The generator will automatically turn on when the power goes out, and automatically turn off when the power returns.

Portability

With its L23.2 x W20.1 x H19.1 in dimensions, the open frame structure of the Westinghouse WGen5300c provides stability, simplified maintenance access to components, and better air cooling than enclosed units. This type of design is ideal for tough environments and heavy outdoor use.

Although this generator is technically considered 'portable' (in the sense that it can be moved), its 136.6 lbs make may make it challenging to manually lift and transport. Nevertheless, it can still be moved quite conveniently with the help of its wheel kit and its folding handle, once it is placed on the ground.

Features

The WGen5300c's control panel

One of the many WGen5300c's features is the digital data center, included in its control panel, which conveniently provides information on the lifetime run hours, voltage and frequency and thus, helps you monitor its activity and status.

A built-in fuel gauge allows for a quick, easy and convenient check of the fuel level of the generator.

Security-wise, this product benefits from an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), which gives you a complete peace of mind when using it.

It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.

Besides the classic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to get you promptly started, the Westinghouse WGen5300c also comes with some accessories: oil, funnel, battery charger, tool kit and key fob are included. The official storage cover and running cover are also available, as separate purchases.

The Westinghouse WGen5300c versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen5300c compare to generators of similar power (between 4500 and 5500 W).

  • Having a dry weight of 136.6 lbs, the Westinghouse WGen5300c belongs in the expected weight range for generators which produce 4500 to 5500 rated watts. Weight-conscious users may find the Pulsar PGX60BiSRCO appealing, as it is one of the top contenders in this power range, weighing just 93.5 pounds.
  • With noise emissions rated as low as 68 dBA, this generator falls within the typical noise range expected for devices of similar power. If noise level is one your key decisive factors, you may find the Honda EU7000iS appealing. It's rated at 52 dBA, making it one of the quietest generators in its power range.
  • The WGen5300c, offering a run time of around 11 hours with a full tank at a 50% load, falls within the average autonomy range when compared to its peers. If you wish to prioritize autonomy, the NorthStar c5500 shines as one of the top contenders, offering one of the highest run times among generators with similar power output, totaling around 15.1 hours.
  • While run time matters, it's heavily influenced by the fuel tank's capacity. Hence, it's important to consider fuel efficiency alongside. At an estimated fuel consumption of 0.43 GPH (gallon per hour) at 50% load, this generator is a rather fuel-efficient one within its wattage category. To prioritize fuel savings, we advise considering the WEN GN5600, which stands out for its gasoline efficiency, consuming just 0.35 gallons per hour.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 4500-5500W generators, the Westinghouse WGen5300c is on the cheap side of the price range.

It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.

About Westinghouse

The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China and Vietnam.

Warranty Information

The Westinghouse WGen5300c is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
