  • RV travellers looking for even more independence
  • People occasionally participating in sporting competitions, open-air performances and outdoor festivals
  • Food truck owners who do not wish to see their business interrupted under any circumstances

In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed.

Power & Run Time

The Westinghouse WGen5300c in use

The Westinghouse WGen5300c

Westinghouse WGen5300c runs on gasoline, powered by a 274 cc OHV 4-stroke engine with cast iron sleeve, delivering 120/240V, boasting a running wattage of 5,300W alongside a starting wattage of 6,600W.

The generator features a classic hand-operated recoil starting mechanism and also a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included). It is rated for a noise of 68 dBA (less noisy than an office). To increase convenience, the WGen5300c offers remote starting functionality, allowing for easy operation from a distance (key fob included).

The WGen5300c's fuel tank, boasting 4.7 gallons, allows it to operate for around 11 hours at 50% load with a full tank (with an estimated fuel consumption of 0.43 GPH).

Given the WGen5300c's high Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of less than 23%, it is advisable to avoid using it to power sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel features 4 AC outlets as follows:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R)
120V 30A (TT-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

Thanks to its TT-30R receptacle (TT stands for 'Travel Trailer'), this Westinghouse generator is RV Ready, making it ideal for powering recreational vehicles. In addition, with its twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the WGen5300c is designed to be transfer switch ready, allowing easy connection to your breaker box for powering your home during a blackout.

Westinghouse's ST Switch Outlet

Picture of the ST Switch outlet

The ST Switch outlet

The WGen5300c is what Westinghouse calls Smart Switch Ready. This means that it features a special outlet that allows for an automatic transfer of power in case of a power outage.

To benefit from this feature, you'll need the Westinghouse ST Switch (opens in a new tab), which is not included with the generator.

Simply put, the ST Switch is a cost-effective and versatile portable automatic transfer switch, which can be installed quickly and easily, without an electrician.

Plug the ST Switch into one of your household 120V outlets, plug your appliances to the ST Switch, and connect the WGen5300c to the ST Switch via the special outlet and a 120V cord. The generator will automatically turn on when the power goes out, and automatically turn off when the power returns.

Portability

Measuring L23.2 x W20.1 x H19.1 in, the classic open frame build of the Westinghouse WGen5300c delivers stability and easy maintenance access to components, facilitating air circulation. The design is ideal for rough environments and demanding outdoor use.

With a weight of 136.6 lbs, the generator is still labeled as 'portable,' denoting its ability to be moved, although its heaviness might restrict easy portability. Nevertheless, it can still be moved quite conveniently with the help of its wheel kit and its folding handle, once it is placed on the ground.

Features

The WGen5300c's control panel

Featuring a digital data center on its control panel, the WGen5300c offers you convenient access to essential information about the voltage, frequency and lifetime run hours, facilitating effective monitoring of its activity and status.

Thanks to its built-in fuel gauge, the generator allows you to quickly, conveniently, and easily check the gas level at a glance.

From a security standpoint, the product offers an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, allowing you to use it with a peace of mind.

It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.

Along the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), useful for starting the generator right away, the Westinghouse WGen5300c's package also includes these accessories: tool kit, key fob, funnel, battery charger and oil. The official storage cover and running cover are also available, as separate purchases.

The Westinghouse WGen5300c versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen5300c compare to generators of similar power (between 4500 and 5500 W).

  • With a dry weight of 136.6 pounds, the Westinghouse WGen5300c finds itself in the expected weight range for generators able to produce between 4500 and 5500 rated watts. Regarding dry weight, one of the champions in the same power range is the Pulsar PGX60BiSRCO, with a dry weight of only 93.5 lbs.
  • Since the generator's noise is rated at 68 dBA, it has the roughly average expected noise for a device of similar power. For those who are looking for a less noisy device, we suggest the Honda EU7000iS. With just 52 dBA, it is one of the most quiet devices in this power range.
  • With around 11 hours of runtime at a 50% load on a full tank, the WGen5300c is in line with the average autonomy range for generators of comparable power. If runtime is a priority for you, the NorthStar c5500 stands out as one of the generators with the longest run time in its power range, providing around 15.1 hours of continuous use.
  • While run time matters, it's heavily influenced by the fuel tank's capacity. Hence, it's important to consider fuel efficiency alongside. Among devices of similar power, this generator has one of the better fuel efficiency, with consumption rates of around 0.43 GPH (gallon per hour) at 50% load. If not satisfied with the afore-mentioned fuel consumption, you may wish to check out the WEN GN5602X. With a fuel consumption of as little as 0.35 GPH, it is one of the most efficient generators currently on the market.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 4500-5500W generators, the Westinghouse WGen5300c is on the cheap side of the price range.

It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.

About Westinghouse

The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China and Vietnam.

Warranty Information

The Westinghouse WGen5300c is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
