Zoom on the Westinghouse WGen5300c

In summary, the Westinghouse WGen5300c is a compact portable generator especially useful for:

  • RV travellers who wish to upgrade their experience to another level
  • People occasionally participating in outdoor fairs, festivals or events
  • Food truck owners who want to ensure that their business is fully self-contained and does not rely on potentially unreliable external power
  • Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout

In the forthcoming sections, you'll delve into its power characteristics, the various outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the additional features it boasts.

Power & Run Time

The Westinghouse WGen5300c in use

The Westinghouse WGen5300c

Westinghouse WGen5300c runs on gasoline, powered by a 274 cc OHV 4-stroke engine, delivering 120/240V, boasting a running wattage of 5,300W alongside a starting wattage of 6,600W.

The generator, rated for a noise of 68 dBA (less noisy than background music), provides flexibility in starting, offering both a simple traditional pull-start mechanism and a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included). Additionally, the WGen5300c features remote starting, offering users increased convenience (key fob included).

Equipped with a 4.7 gallons fuel tank, the WGen5300c ensures continuous operation for around 11 hours at 50% load with a full tank (fuel usage approximately 0.43 gallons per hour).

The WGen5300c is unsuitable for the powering of sensitive electronic devices due to its high THD (<23%).

Outlets

The control panel provides the upcoming 4 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R)
120V 30A (TT-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

Thanks to its TT-30R receptacle (TT stands for 'Travel Trailer'), this Westinghouse generator is RV Ready, making it ideal for powering recreational vehicles. In addition, as it features a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the WGen5300c is transfer switch ready: in case of a power outage, you will be easily able to connect it to a breaker box and power your household.

Westinghouse's ST Switch Outlet

Picture of the ST Switch outlet

The ST Switch outlet

The WGen5300c is what Westinghouse calls Smart Switch Ready. This means that it features a special outlet that allows for an automatic transfer of power in case of a power outage.

To benefit from this feature, you'll need the Westinghouse ST Switch (opens in a new tab), which is not included with the generator.

Simply put, the ST Switch is a cost-effective and versatile portable automatic transfer switch, which can be installed quickly and easily, without an electrician.

Plug the ST Switch into one of your household 120V outlets, plug your appliances to the ST Switch, and connect the WGen5300c to the ST Switch via the special outlet and a 120V cord. The generator will automatically turn on when the power goes out, and automatically turn off when the power returns.

Portability

With dimensions of L23.2 x W20.1 x H19.1 in, the standard open frame design of the Westinghouse WGen5300c provides stability and easy maintenance access to components, as well as good air circulation. This type of design is ideal for tough environments and heavy outdoor use.

While the generator is considered to be technically 'portable' (in the sense that you can move it), manually lifting and transporting it may be challenging, due to its high weight of 136.6 lbs. Despite the restricted maneuverability, its wheel kit and its folding handle provides a solution, allowing for convenient shifting once the generator is positioned on the ground.

Features

The WGen5300c's control panel

A digital data center, one of the features of the WGen5300c's control panel, gives you information on the lifetime run hours, frequency and voltage, and thus, is helpful for the monitoring of its activity and status.

The generator includes a built-in fuel gauge, a quick, easy and convenient method of checking the device’s gas level.

Regarding security, the generator comes with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), providing peace of mind during operation.

It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.

In addition to the traditional documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to help you get started promptly, the Westinghouse WGen5300c also includes several accessories: key fob, battery charger, funnel, oil and tool kit. The official storage cover and running cover are also available, as separate purchases.

The Westinghouse WGen5300c versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen5300c compare to generators of similar power (between 4500 and 5500 W).

  • When it comes to weight, the Westinghouse WGen5300c tips the scales at just 136.6 pounds, making it one of the lighter generators in the 4500 to 5500 rated wattage range. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the Champion 201238, standing at just 101.4 lbs.
  • With noise emissions reaching as low as 68 dBA, this generator has a noise level typical for devices of its power category. For those who are looking for a less noisy device, we suggest the Honda EU7000iS. With just 52 dBA, it is one of the most quiet devices in this power range.
  • With a runtime of around 11 hours under a 50% load on a full tank, the WGen5300c falls within the average autonomy range among the generators of a similar power. If runtime is a priority for you, the NorthStar c5500 stands out as one of the generators with the longest run time in its power range, providing around 15.1 hours of continuous use.
  • While the run time is an important parameter, it is dependent on the fuel tank's capacity and thus, doesn't say much on its own unless we consider fuel consumption as well. This generator can be considered as fuel-efficient, due to its low estimated fuel consumption of only 0.43 GPH (gallon per hour) at 50% load, within the aforementioned wattage range. If fuel consumption is your top priority, we suggest to check out the WEN GN5602X, which has a fuel consumption of only 0.35 GPH and thus, is one of the most efficient devices in our database.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 4500-5500W generators, the Westinghouse WGen5300c is on the cheap side of the price range.

It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.

About Westinghouse

The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China.

Warranty Information

The Westinghouse WGen5300c is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
