In the upcoming sections, you'll discover its power characteristics, the array of outlets it presents, its overall portability, and the additional features it possesses.

Power & Run Time

The Westinghouse WGen14500TFc in use

The Westinghouse WGen14500TFc

The Westinghouse WGen14500TFc delivers 120/240V and is equipped with a tri-fuel technology, enabling it to operate on gasoline, propane, or natural gas. When powered by gasoline, it achieves a running wattage of 14,500W and a peak wattage of 18,000W. Switching to propane provides 13,000 rated watts and 16,000 peak watts, while natural gas operation delivers 11,600W of rated wattage and 14,400W of starting wattage.

Featuring a noise rating of 79 dBA (less noisy than a vacuum cleaner), the generator utilizes an easy-to-use and reliable electric starter (battery included) for ignition. For added user convenience, the WGen14500TFc is equipped with remote starting capabilities (key fob included).

In terms of running time, the WGen14500TFc, equipped with a 10.5 gallons fuel tank, is capable of running continuously for around 10 hours at 50% load on a full gasoline tank (with fuel consumption estimated at around 1.05 gallons per hour). When utilizing propane, it provides around 3.5 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.34 GPH) of operation.

The control panel features 7 AC outlets as follows:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

Additionally, it features 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports (USB-A) ensuring convenient charging of devices like mobile phones and tablets, for connectivity on the go.

This Westinghouse generator features an L5-30R receptacle, enabling an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. However, it is still not quite RV ready. Besides, since it features a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the WGen14500TFc is tailored to be transfer switch ready, making it easy to connect it to your breaker box for home power support during outages.

Westinghouse's ST Switch Outlet

Picture of the ST Switch outlet

The ST Switch outlet

The WGen14500TFc is what Westinghouse calls Smart Switch Ready. This means that it features a special outlet that allows for an automatic transfer of power in case of a power outage.

To benefit from this feature, you'll need the Westinghouse ST Switch (opens in a new tab), which is not included with the generator.

Simply put, the ST Switch is a cost-effective and versatile portable automatic transfer switch, which can be installed quickly and easily, without an electrician.

Plug the ST Switch into one of your household 120V outlets, plug your appliances to the ST Switch, and connect the WGen14500TFc to the ST Switch via the special outlet and a 120V cord. The generator will automatically turn on when the power goes out, and automatically turn off when the power returns.

At L30.3 x W34.9 x H34.3 in, the Westinghouse WGen14500TFc boasts a traditional open frame structure, ensuring stability and allowing for convenient maintenance access to components, promoting air circulation. The design is ideal for rough environments and demanding outdoor use.

Even though this device may be technically portable (as in movable), manipulation and transportation without special equipment can be a challenge, as it weighs 348.3 pounds. Still, once it is on the ground, its wheel kit and its folding handle can easily solve the issue of low mobility and allow for easy relocation of the device.

A lift hook, which is on the top of the frame, serves as an extra safety feature for the transport, unloading and loading of the device.

The WGen14500TFc's control panel

The WGen14500TFc's control center features a convenient meter, providing voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours data to aid you with the monitoring of its status and activity.

Featuring a built-in fuel gauge, the generator offers quick, convenient, and easy gas level checks at a glance.

From a security standpoint, the generator is furnished with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), ensuring peace of mind during operation.

It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.

Apart from the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to facilitate setup, the Westinghouse WGen14500TFc features extra accessories: natural gas hose with NPT adapter, propane hose, oil, key fob, battery charger, funnel and tool kit.

The Westinghouse WGen14500TFc versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen14500TFc compare to multi-fuel generators of similar power (between 10000 and 14000 W).

  • At a dry weight of 348.3 pounds, the Westinghouse WGen14500TFc is one of the heavier inverters which can produce between 10000 and 14000 running watts. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the Predator 13000, standing at just 226 lbs.
  • When stacked up against other devices of similar running wattage, this generator's lowest possible noise rating of 79 dBA places it in the louder category. If you’d prefer a less noisy device, one of the most quiet devices, which share the same power range with this one, is the DuroMax XP16000iH, whose lowest noise levels reach just 67 dBA.
  • At a 50% load, the WGen14500TFc's around 10 hours of runtime on a full tank fall within the average autonomy range for similarly powerful multi-fuel generators. If wyou wish to prioritize autonomy, the Predator 13000 shines as one of the top contenders, offering one of the highest run times among generators with similar power output, totaling around 12.1 hours.
  • Run time is a key metric, but it's dependent on the generator's fuel capacity. Therefore, discussing fuel efficiency is necessary to get the full picture. The generator burns fuel at a rate of around 1.05 GPH when running at a 50% load, which is consistent with the average fuel usage of models of comparable power output. If fuel consumption is your top priority, we suggest to check out the Predator 13000, which has a fuel consumption of only 0.88 GPH and thus, is one of the most efficient devices in our database.

About Westinghouse

The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China.
