Description

Zoom on the Westinghouse WGen14500DFc

In short, the Westinghouse WGen14500DFc is a powerful portable generator adequately designed for:

  • Professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure
  • Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials

Over the following sections, you'll uncover its power characteristics, the selection of outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it includes.

Power & Run Time

The Westinghouse WGen14500DFc in use

The Westinghouse WGen14500DFc

Featuring dual-fuel technology, the Westinghouse WGen14500DFc provides 120/240V, as well as versatility and power. Running on gasoline, it delivers a running wattage of 14,500W and a peak wattage of 18,000W. Alternatively, when fueled by propane, it offers 13,000 running watts and 16,000 peak watts.

The generator features a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included). It is rated for a noise of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a vacuum cleaner). To add further convenience, the WGen14500DFc can be remotely started (key fob included).

In terms of run time, the WGen14500DFc, boasting a 10.5 gallons fuel tank, can run for around 11 hours at 50% load on a full tank of gasoline (with fuel consumption averaging 0.95 gallons per hour). Additionally, it provides around 7 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.67 GPH) of operation with propane.

With a <5% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), the WGen14500DFc delivers a clean sine wave—essential for safeguarding your delicate electronics when plugged into its AC outlets.

Outlets

The control panel is equipped with the following 7 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

Additionally, it offers 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports (USB-A) enabling convenient charging of devices like mobile phones and tablets.

Even though this Westinghouse generator isn't quite RV Ready, its L5-30R receptacle allows an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, equipped with a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the WGen14500DFc is engineered to be transfer switch ready, enabling simple hookup to your breaker box to provide backup power for your home during blackouts.

Westinghouse's ST Switch Outlet

Picture of the ST Switch outlet

The ST Switch outlet

The WGen14500DFc is what Westinghouse calls Smart Switch Ready. This means that it features a special outlet that allows for an automatic transfer of power in case of a power outage.

To benefit from this feature, you'll need the Westinghouse ST Switch (opens in a new tab), which is not included with the generator.

Simply put, the ST Switch is a cost-effective and versatile portable automatic transfer switch, which can be installed quickly and easily, without an electrician.

Plug the ST Switch into one of your household 120V outlets, plug your appliances to the ST Switch, and connect the WGen14500DFc to the ST Switch via the special outlet and a 120V cord. The generator will automatically turn on when the power goes out, and automatically turn off when the power returns.

Portability

Measuring L34 x W31 x H35 in, the classic open frame construction of the Westinghouse WGen14500DFc provides stability while enabling convenient maintenance access to components and adequate air cooling. The generator is designed for ideal use outdoors and in rough environments.

As the generator's weight is 352 pounds, manually moving it or transporting it may be challenging, despite the fact that it is technically considered 'portable' (movable). However, its challenging mobility is solved by its wheel kit and its folding handle, which will ease its displacement, once it is on the floor.

Further safety during transport, loading and unloading of the device is provided by a lift hook, which is placed on the top of the generator's frame.

Features

The WGen14500DFc's control panel

The WGen14500DFc's control center features a convenient meter, showing voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours metrics to aid you with the monitoring of its status and activity.

Featuring a built-in fuel gauge, the generator offers quick, convenient, and easy gas level checks at a glance.

As far as security is concerned, the generator can be used with a peace of mind, as it features an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off.

It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.

Apart from the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), which lets you start it right away, the Westinghouse WGen14500DFc also is packed along with the following accessories: propane hose, tool kit, key fob, oil, funnel and battery charger.

The Westinghouse WGen14500DFc versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen14500DFc compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 10000 and 14500 W).

  • As its dry weight is 352 pounds, the Westinghouse WGen14500DFc is one of the heavier of the dual fuel products which can generate 10000 to 14500 running watts. If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the DuroStar DS13000MX, with a dry weight of just 209 pounds.
  • As its lowest possible noise is rated at 74 dBA, this generator qualifies as one of the more quiet of the products of similar type and power. If you value reduced noise levels, the DuroMax XP16000iH could be worth considering. It's one of the quietest generators in its power range, rated at 67 dBA.
  • Among its dual fuel devices with similar power, the WGen14500DFc offers one of the higher run times, running for around 11 hours at 50% load. If you consider autonomy on a single full tank as one of the deciding factors, one of the generators in the same power range that offers the highest run time is the DuroMax XP15000HX, with around 12 hours.
  • Run time is crucial, but it heavily relies on the fuel tank's capacity. Thus, considering fuel efficiency alongside is essential. This generator is one of the most fuel-efficient options in its power range, consuming approximately 0.95 GPH (gallon per hour) at 50% load.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 10000-14500W dual fuel generators, the Westinghouse WGen14500DFc is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

About Westinghouse

The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China.

Warranty Information

The Westinghouse WGen14500DFc is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
