Description

Zoom on the Westinghouse WGen14500c

In a nutshell, the Westinghouse WGen14500c is a powerful portable generator mostly geared towards:

  • Professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment
  • Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout

The subsequent sections will explore in detail its power characteristics, the diverse outlets it provides, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it offers.

Power & Run Time

The Westinghouse WGen14500c's engine, 713 cc (22 hp) Westinghouse V-Twin with cast iron sleeve, fueled by gasoline, can deliver 120/240V. It provides a running wattage of 14,500W and reaches a peak wattage of 18,000W.

Operating at a noise rating of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a dishwasher), this generator starts up with a hassle-free and practical electric starter (battery included). Furthermore, for added convenience, the WGen14500c offers remote starting capabilities (key fob included).

Thanks to a fuel capacity of 10.5 gallons, the WGen14500c can operate for around 11 hours at 50% load with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.95 GPH).

Delicate electronics can be plugged in the AC outlets safely, as the WGen14500c generates a clean sine wave, reaching a <5% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD).

Outlets

The control panel features 7 AC outlets as follows:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

Additionally, it features 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports (USB-A) ideal for charging various electronic devices such as smartphones and tablets.

Despite not having the 'RV Ready' status, this Westinghouse generator provides the benefit of convenient RV compatibility through its L5-30R receptacle, enabling you to easily power your RV using an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, as the WGen14500c holds a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: you'll easily be able to connect it to your breaker box to power your home during a power outage.

Westinghouse's ST Switch Outlet

Picture of the ST Switch outlet

The ST Switch outlet

The WGen14500c is what Westinghouse calls Smart Switch Ready. This means that it features a special outlet that allows for an automatic transfer of power in case of a power outage.

To benefit from this feature, you'll need the Westinghouse ST Switch (opens in a new tab), which is not included with the generator.

Simply put, the ST Switch is a cost-effective and versatile portable automatic transfer switch, which can be installed quickly and easily, without an electrician.

Plug the ST Switch into one of your household 120V outlets, plug your appliances to the ST Switch, and connect the WGen14500c to the ST Switch via the special outlet and a 120V cord. The generator will automatically turn on when the power goes out, and automatically turn off when the power returns.

Portability

At L34 x W31 x H35 in, the standard open frame design of the Westinghouse WGen14500c delivers stability alongside easy maintenance access to components and good air cooling. The design is ideal for rough environments and demanding outdoor use.

Despite its weight of 352 lbs, the generator is still considered 'portable,' meaning it is movable, although its heftiness may restrict portability in certain environments or require additional considerations for transportation and setup. Despite the restricted maneuverability, its wheel kit and its folding handle provides a solution, allowing for convenient shifting once the generator is positioned on the ground.

The generator comes with an additional safety feature, a lift hook on the top of its frame, which is helpful during its transport, loading and unloading.

Features

The WGen14500c's control panel

Included in the control panel of the WGen14500c are a convenient meter, which displays voltage, frequency and lifetime hours, essential for monitoring its status and activity.

Benefiting from its built-in fuel gauge, the generator allows for easy and immediate gas level inspections.

From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), giving you a peace of mind during use.

It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.

Besides the classic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to get you promptly started, the Westinghouse WGen14500c also comes with some accessories: funnel, key fob, battery charger, oil and tool kit are included.

The Westinghouse WGen14500c versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen14500c compare to generators of similar power (between 10000 and 14500 W).

  • Weighing 352 lbs, the Westinghouse WGen14500c is one of the heavier generators within the 10000-14500 rated wattage bracket. If weight is a key factor for your needs, the Genmax GM12000XiT is noteworthy for being one of the top contenders in this power range, with a dry weight of 194 pounds.
  • As this generator can emit noise as low as 74 dBA, it finds itself in the average expected noise for this kind of power. For those who are looking for a less noisy device, we suggest the Genmax GM13500iETC. With just 62 dBA, it is one of the most quiet devices in this power range.
  • Among its devices with similar power, the WGen14500c offers one of the higher run times, running for around 11 hours at 50% load. For those prioritizing autonomy, the WEN TF1450X could be considered, as it offers one of the longest run times among generators with similar power output, reaching around 12 hours.
  • Though run time is a significant parameter, it's closely tied to the generator's fuel tank size. To get a comprehensive understanding, fuel efficiency must also be taken into account. This generator is one of the more fuel-efficient models of the aforementioned output range, as its estimated fuel consumption reaches just 0.95 GPH (gallon per hour) at 50% load. If fuel consumption is your top priority, we suggest to check out the WEN TF1450X, which has a fuel consumption of only 0.68 GPH and thus, is one of the most efficient devices in our database.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 10000-14500W generators, the Westinghouse WGen14500c is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

About Westinghouse

The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China and Vietnam.

Warranty Information

The Westinghouse WGen14500c is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
