Description

Zoom on the Westinghouse WGen14500c

In a nutshell, the Westinghouse WGen14500c is a powerful portable generator mostly geared towards:

  • Professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure
  • Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures

Over the following sections, you'll uncover its power characteristics, the selection of outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it includes.

Power & Run Time

Featuring a 713 cc (22 hp) Westinghouse V-Twin engine with cast iron sleeve, the Westinghouse WGen14500c operates using gasoline, providing 120/240V, with a running wattage of 14,500W and a starting wattage of 18,000W.

With a noise rating of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a dishwasher), the generator features a user-friendly and hassle-free electric starter (battery included). To increase convenience, the WGen14500c offers remote starting functionality, allowing for easy operation from a distance (key fob included).

With a fuel capacity of 10.5 gallons, the WGen14500c may run for around 11 hours at 50% load with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.95 GPH).

The WGen14500c ensures a clean sine wave output, boasting <5% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) to protect your sensitive electronics when connected to its AC outlets.

Outlets

The control panel includes the following 7 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

Moreover, it comes equipped with 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports (USB-A) allowing you to conveniently charge electronics such as mobile phones and tablets.

Despite not meeting the 'RV Ready' criteria, this Westinghouse generator grants the advantage of simple RV compatibility via its L5-30R receptacle, enabling you to conveniently power your RV by using an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, as the WGen14500c holds a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: you'll easily be able to connect it to your breaker box to power your home during a power outage.

Westinghouse's ST Switch Outlet

Picture of the ST Switch outlet

The ST Switch outlet

The WGen14500c is what Westinghouse calls Smart Switch Ready. This means that it features a special outlet that allows for an automatic transfer of power in case of a power outage.

To benefit from this feature, you'll need the Westinghouse ST Switch (opens in a new tab), which is not included with the generator.

Simply put, the ST Switch is a cost-effective and versatile portable automatic transfer switch, which can be installed quickly and easily, without an electrician.

Plug the ST Switch into one of your household 120V outlets, plug your appliances to the ST Switch, and connect the WGen14500c to the ST Switch via the special outlet and a 120V cord. The generator will automatically turn on when the power goes out, and automatically turn off when the power returns.

Portability

At L34 x W31 x H35 in, the Westinghouse WGen14500c boasts a traditional open frame structure, ensuring stability and allowing for convenient maintenance access to components, promoting air circulation. The device has been designed for tough environments and demanding outdoor use.

While weighing 352 lbs, the generator is classified as 'portable,' indicating its mobility, albeit its heftiness may limit portability in specific situations. However, its challenging mobility is solved by its wheel kit and its folding handle, which will ease its displacement, once it is on the floor.

In addition, the device is equipped with a lift hook on the top of its frame, which provides extra safety during the loading, unloading and transport of the generator.

Features

The WGen14500c's control panel

To facilitate status and activity monitoring, a convenient meter, which displays voltage, frequency and lifetime hours are embedded in the control panel of the WGen14500c.

A built-in fuel gauge allows for a quick, easy and convenient check of the fuel level of the generator.

As for its security measures, the device features an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), letting you use it with a peace of mind.

It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.

With the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), letting you start the generator quickly, the Westinghouse WGen14500c also comes with several accessories, including: tool kit, oil, funnel, battery charger and key fob.

The Westinghouse WGen14500c versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen14500c compare to generators of similar power (between 10000 and 14500 W).

  • With a weight of 352 lbs, the Westinghouse WGen14500c is notably on the heavier side among generators in the 10000-14500 rated wattage range. Regarding dry weight, one of the champions in the same power range is the DuroStar DS13000MX, with a dry weight of only 209 lbs.
  • This generator has a somewhat average expected noise for its power range, rated at 74 dBA. For those who are looking for a less noisy device, we suggest the Genmax GM13500iETC. With just 62 dBA, it is one of the most quiet devices in this power range.
  • With a run time of around 11 hours at 50% load, the WGen14500c has one of the higher run times, compared to its similarly powerful peers. Furthermore, considering the run times, one of the generators which have a roughly same power output, with the highest autonomy, is the WEN TF1450X, as it provides around 12 hours.
  • Run time is a key metric, but it's dependent on the generator's fuel tank capacity. Therefore, discussing fuel efficiency is necessary for a complete understanding. With an estimated gasoline consumption of 0.95 GPH (gallon per hour) at 50% load, this generator is among the more fuel-efficient of the products in the above-mentioned wattage range. If you wish to acquire one of the most gasoline efficient products of this power range, the WEN TF1450X, with a fuel consumption of 0.68 GPH could be in your good books.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 10000-14500W generators, the Westinghouse WGen14500c is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

About Westinghouse

The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China and Vietnam.

Warranty Information

The Westinghouse WGen14500c is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
