Zoom on the Westinghouse WGen12000DFc
In a nutshell, the Westinghouse WGen12000DFc is a powerful portable generator mostly geared towards:
- Professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment
- Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed, including its emission compliance information.
Power & Run Time
With its dual-fuel technology, the powerful and versatile Westinghouse WGen12000DFc provides an output of 120/240V. While gasoline-powered, it gives a running wattage of 12,000W along with a peak wattage of 15,000W. While propane-powered, it provides 10,800 rated watts and 13,500 starting watts.
At a noise rating of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a shower), the generator is started via a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included). The WGen12000DFc can also be remotely started, offering further convenience (key fob included).
The WGen12000DFc, with a fuel capacity of 10.5 gallons, reaches a run time of around 11 hours at 50% load utilizing gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.95 GPH). Alternatively, it can reach a run time of around 7 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.67 GPH) with propane.
The WGen12000DFc generates a clean sine wave: providing <5% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), delicate electronics can be plugged in its AC outlets safely.
The control panel includes the following 7 AC outlets:
Furthermore, it has 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports (USB-A) with which charging of electronics like mobile phones and tablets is made convenient.
This Westinghouse generator isn't quite RV Ready, but it features an L5-30R receptacle, allowing a simple RV connection through an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, because the WGen12000DFc is equipped with a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: it can power your home during a power outage, as it can be easily connected to your breaker box to power your household.
Westinghouse's ST Switch Outlet
The WGen12000DFc is what Westinghouse calls Smart Switch Ready. This means that it features a special outlet that allows for an automatic transfer of power in case of a power outage.
To benefit from this feature, you'll need the Westinghouse ST Switch (opens in a new tab), which is not included with the generator.
Simply put, the ST Switch is a cost-effective and versatile portable automatic transfer switch, which can be installed quickly and easily, without an electrician.
Plug the ST Switch into one of your household 120V outlets, plug your appliances to the ST Switch, and connect the WGen12000DFc to the ST Switch via the special outlet and a 120V cord. The generator will automatically turn on when the power goes out, and automatically turn off when the power returns.
The Westinghouse WGen12000DFc has a conventional, open frame design, of the following dimensions: L34 x W31 x H35 in, which offers support and allows it to be raised above ground level. This type of design is ideal for tough environments and heavy outdoor use.
Although this generator is technically considered 'portable' (in the sense that it can be moved), its 352 lbs make it incredibly difficult to manually lift and transport. However, its challenging mobility is solved by its wheel kit and its folding handle, which will ease its displacement, once it is on the floor.
A lift hook located on the top of the frame offers an additional safety feature while facilitating the transport, loading and unloading of the generator.
The WGen12000DFc's status and activity may be monitored conveniently via the control panel, as it features a convenient meter, which displays voltage, frequency and lifetime hours.
The generator allows for a quick, easy and convenient assessment of its gas level, as it is equipped with a built-in fuel gauge.
As far as security is concerned, the generator can be used with a peace of mind, as it features an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker).
It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.
Along the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), useful for starting the generator right away, the Westinghouse WGen12000DFc's package also includes these accessories: tool kit, funnel, oil, key fob, battery charger and propane hose.
The Westinghouse WGen12000DFc is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Therefore, its sale and purchase are permitted in all of the 50 states, including California.
Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, so it is adequate for use in forested areas.
The Westinghouse WGen12000DFc versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen12000DFc compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 10000 and 14000 W).
- As its dry weight is 352 pounds, the Westinghouse WGen12000DFc is one of the heavier of the dual fuel products which can generate 10000 to 14000 running watts. Regarding dry weight, one of the champions in the same power range is the Pulsar PG13000BRCO, with a dry weight of only 231 lbs.
- At a lowest noise rating of 74 dBA, this generator is one of the quieter devices of similar type and power. If you’d prefer a less noisy device, one of the most quiet devices, which share the same power range with this one, is the DuroMax XP16000iH, whose lowest noise levels reach just 67 dBA.
- With a run time of around 11 hours at 50% load, the WGen12000DFc has one of the higher run times, compared to its similarly powerful peers. If autonomy is your priority, one of the devices of a similar power output with the highest run time is the DuroMax XP15000HX, reaching around 12 hours.
- Run times are important, yet thanks to their dependence on the fuel capacity, they should be judged along with the fuel consumption of the device. This generator can be considered as one of the most fuel efficient, due to its low estimated fuel consumption of only 0.95 GPH (gallon per hour) at 50% load, within the aforementioned wattage range.
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 10000-14000W dual fuel generators, the Westinghouse WGen12000DFc is on the average side of the price range.
Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China.
The Westinghouse WGen12000DFc is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
