Zoom on the Westinghouse WGen12000DFc
In a nutshell, the Westinghouse WGen12000DFc is a powerful portable generator mostly geared towards:
- Professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment
- Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials
In the following paragraphs, we shall explore the power characteristics, available outlets, portability, and any additional features of the device, along with its emission compliance information.
Power & Run Time
Thanks to its dual-fuel technology, the Westinghouse WGen12000DFc delivers 120/240V and offers power and versatility. When gasoline-powered, it benefits from a running wattage of 12,000W and a peak wattage of 15,000W. When propane-powered, it has 10,800 rated watts and 13,500 peak watts.
Enjoying a noise rating of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a shower), this generator gets running thanks to a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included). Moreover, to offer you even more convenience, the WGen12000DFc can also be remotely started (key fob included).
The running time of the WGen12000DFc, with its 10.5 gallons fuel capacity, can reach around 11 hours at 50% load on a full tank of gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.95 GPH). With propane, it can reach around 7 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.67 GPH).
Sensitive electronics can be safely plugged in the AC outlets, as the WGen12000DFc produces a clean sine wave, with a <5% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD).
Outlets
The control panel includes the following 7 AC outlets:
Furthermore, it has 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports (USB-A) with which you may charge electronics, for example mobile phones or tablets, conveniently.
This Westinghouse generator features an L5-30R receptacle, enabling an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. However, it is still not quite RV ready. Besides, due to the featured twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the WGen12000DFc is transfer switch ready: you may connect it to a breaker box to power your household during a power outage.
Westinghouse's ST Switch Outlet

The ST Switch outlet
The WGen12000DFc is what Westinghouse calls Smart Switch Ready. This means that it features a special outlet that allows for an automatic transfer of power in case of a power outage.
To benefit from this feature, you'll need the Westinghouse ST Switch (opens in a new tab), which is not included with the generator.
Simply put, the ST Switch is a cost-effective and versatile portable automatic transfer switch, which can be installed quickly and easily, without an electrician.
Plug the ST Switch into one of your household 120V outlets, plug your appliances to the ST Switch, and connect the WGen12000DFc to the ST Switch via the special outlet and a 120V cord. The generator will automatically turn on when the power goes out, and automatically turn off when the power returns.
Portability
The Westinghouse WGen12000DFc has the following dimensions: L34 x W31 x H35 in. In combination with its conventional, open frame design, they provide support and allow the generator to be raised above ground level. This type of design is ideal for tough environments and heavy outdoor use.
Even though this device may be technically portable (as in movable), manipulation and transportation without special equipment can be a challenge, as it weighs 352 pounds. Still, once it is on the ground, its wheel kit and its folding handle can easily solve the issue of low mobility and allow for easy relocation of the device.
In addition, the device is equipped with a lift hook on the top of its frame, which provides extra safety during the loading, unloading and transport of the generator.
Features
To help you monitor the WGen12000DFc's status and activity, its control panel is equipped with a convenient meter showing you voltage, frequency and lifetime hours.
The generator includes a built-in fuel gauge, a quick, easy and convenient method of checking the device’s gas level.
As far as security is concerned, the generator can be used with a peace of mind, as it features an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off.
It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.
While the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), helpful for starting the device promptly, come with the Westinghouse WGen12000DFc, the following accessories are also included: propane hose, oil, battery charger, key fob, tool kit and funnel.
Emissions
The Westinghouse WGen12000DFc is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. It can therefore be sold and purchased in all 50 states, including California.
Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, so it is adequate for use in forested areas.
The Westinghouse WGen12000DFc versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen12000DFc compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 10000 and 14000 W).
- With its weight of 352 lbs, the Westinghouse WGen12000DFc is one of the heavier dual fuel generators in the 10000-14000 rated wattage category. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the Pulsar PG13000BRCO, standing at just 231 lbs.
- With a lowest possible noise of 74 dBA, this generator places itself amongst the more quiet of the products delivering similar power. If noise emissions are one of your priorities, you may be interested in the DuroMax XP16000iH, one of the least noisy generators similarly powerful as this one, rated for 67 dBA.
- Since the WGen12000DFc boasts with a run time of around 11 hours at 50% load, it can be safely judged as a device of a higher run time than most dual fuel generators of a comparable output. If you consider autonomy on a single full tank as one of the deciding factors, one of the generators in the same power range that offers the highest run time is the DuroMax XP15000HX, with around 12 hours.
- The run time is important, but also hugely depends on the capacity of the fuel tank and doesn't mean much if we don't talk about fuel consumption as well. This generator, with an estimated fuel consumption of just 0.95 GPH (gallon per hour) at 50% load, is one of the most fuel efficient generators, for the previously mentioned wattage range.
Price comparison
As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 10000-14000W dual fuel generators, the Westinghouse WGen12000DFc is on the average side of the price range.
Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

About Westinghouse
The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China.
Warranty Information
The Westinghouse WGen12000DFc is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
