The Westinghouse WGen11500TFc versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen11500TFc compare to multi-fuel generators of similar power (between 10000 and 14000 W).

  • As far as its dry weight is concerned, the Westinghouse WGen11500TFc weighs just 230 pounds and thus, it is one of the lighter 10000 to 14000 rated wattage multi-fuel generators. If weight is a key factor for your needs, the DuroStar DS13000MX is noteworthy for being one of the top contenders in this power range, with a dry weight of 209 pounds.
  • At 74 dBA, this generator's noise rating is in line with the expected average for devices within its type and power category. If you value reduced noise levels, the Genmax GM17000iETC could be worth considering. It's one of the quietest generators in its power range, rated at 63 dBA.

If you consider autonomy on a single full tank as one of the deciding factors, one of the generators in the same power range that offers the highest run time is the WEN TF1450X, with around 12 hours.
  • While the run time is an important parameter, it is dependent on the fuel tank's capacity and thus, doesn't say much on its own unless we consider fuel consumption as well. Standing at an estimated 1 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 50% load, this generator is somewhat average in this area compared to other devices, within the aforementioned wattage range. If you wish to acquire one of the most gasoline efficient products of this power range, the WEN TF1450X, with a fuel consumption of 0.68 GPH could be in your good books.

About Westinghouse

The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China and Vietnam.

Bought this unit after hurricane Beryl due to the low THD claims. After testing the unit and putting it under load I found out the claims were false. I was reading 12.5% at about 75% load. No different than what Duromax puts out.

I found the engine to make funny knocks and rattles on gas or natural gas. Moved to a different brand and couldn’t be happier!

    + PROS:
    • Lightweight, small footprint, trifuel, reasonably priced, remote start
    - CONS:
    • False THD claims, lower quality build than others, concerned about it being mechanically sound.

Thrilled with the performance and reliability of this workhorse during our recent 100hour+ outage. I purchased this generator after carefully researching various social media sites from avid users and knowledgeable people regarding portable generators, including this site. Purchased in late 2024 and did the customary break in procedures as outlined in the manual. Replaced the factory spark plug (Torch) that did crank the unit but only after 4-7 attempts. Used Magnetic dipstick to remove excess shavings and metal sludge. The unit comes dry and you must oil the air filter and add 1.2 quarts of SAE 10-30 oil as it’s shipped dry. Broke in for 5 hours by instructions varying the load. I’ve only used propane for my set up. The data in the specifications regarding fuel consumption appears accurate. During the 128 hours I used roughly 80-85 gallons of propane as this unit ran continuously only stopping for oil changes at the 25, 75, and 125 marks during the outage.

Our home set up included the 50-Amp plug and interlock for 1 or our 2 200 amp panel and is all electric. We had all our kitchen appliances (mic, toaster, air fryer, 4 stove eyes, 27″ wall oven, 2 modern refrigerators) all being used, just not simultaneously. We used our Mitsubishi mini-split (3) for heat along with our 2 wood stoves each having the blowers on continuously as it was very cold throughout the outage. All lighting, electronics, phone charges, etc. were used. We also had prepared to utilize our dishwasher, clothes washer, Hot Water heater, and well pump during the outage and we did. The only time this unit bogged down (never shut off) was when we were cooking with 3 stove eyes, the well pump was on and water heater, with lights, etc on as daughter jumped in shower and the unit couldn’t keep up. This was signified with a deep bogging down sound and lights flickering… Other than that one instance during the week the unit never slipped and showed any concern it couldn’t power our whole house. You will most likely have to communicate and load shed as we did. When we were using the stove/oven/air fryer, no one would flush, do hair with curling irons etc… but it was fairly simple to figure out by listening to the unit and sensing it was being pushed to it’s limits. The unit is loud. You will hear a constant noise that becomes appreciated over time the longer your outage goes out. You may become annoyed for a moment and then realize how you’d feel if you didn’t have it. Our only regret was not putting the clothes dryer on the active panel. We did not use our HVAC 3.5 ton heat pump as we have other heating and cooling methods more efficient.

The unit is easy to maneuver has all the features one could ask for in a portable whole home generator. I had to change the bond (takes about 10 min) from the neutral bonded to frame as from the factory to a floating neutral as this unit is only used for my home and not stand alone.

Do your oil changes and follow the manual and you’ll most likely have a great experience and appreciation for this large powerful unit that delivers exactly what it claims to do. THD I never checked but we did have an older LED utilitec light in the kitchen ceiling that didn’t agree with the power produced. We kept that one light off almost the entire time as it would flicker and cut on and off periodically when the unit had a heavy load on it. (water heater, stove, or oven etc….) I guess the THD is less than 5% only when you have a light load on it 25% or so. When it’s hitting 50% load and more I would guess that % goes up to 10%+ but I did not measure during the emergency. Great unit overall and wife and I have decided to buy a second unit as a back up. We were absolutely thrilled and grateful we went with this product as it exceeded our expectations in every way.

    WGen11500TFc Generator = perfect upgrade
History: I have been using a 5500 watt generator, which has been a workable option that has seen us through power outages due to hurricanes and winter freezes in southeast Texas. It wouldn’t handle the central AC for summer, but saved us by being able to handle winter heating via the central unit, possible only because it used a gas furnace and only needed electricity for the fan.

Now in 2024, we replaced our aged AC unit with a top shelf AC/Heat Pump system. Much more efficient, but with electric heat boost behind the heat pump (no gas heat). I needed a generator that would handle a 5 ton unit, along with two refrigerators, a freezer, and basic household items. It is ok to be hot in the summer without AC, but loss of heat in winter could endanger both health and property. After significant research, I settled on the WGen11500TFc. It arrived quickly from Home Depot, in perfect condition. The manual, paperwork, included tools and accessories are first class. Directions are clear and well illustrated. So glad they didn’t decide to make the buyer go purchase propane and natural gas hoses at additional expense. This is a great decision that lets you know you have the right parts, and that you have everything you need to get started right away. The included funnel for oil is a nice touch, though it’s very slow to use due to its small capacity. I will add a flexible funnel with a bit more cup size.

After upgrading my generator input system to handle 50 amps (it was 30 amps on the smaller generator), I am running the first full-scale tests today. Several hours in, I am very impressed! I used the method outlined in the manual to add loads one at a time, largest to smallest. Much to my satisfaction, everything needed is running without issue. I’m going to do a 5 hour break in, varying loads to get it worn in correctly. With another cold arctic push coming this week with below-freezing temps, it is a huge relief to know I can now keep the heat on in bad weather. And now we can have whole-house AC in a summer power outage! I realize this is early on, but I couldn’t be more pleased with the early test results. In my experience, failures happen early… and so far it’s looking great.

I’ve noted a few sites, including this one, quoting an old spec of 25% THD, and thus unusable for electronics. The current (2025) spec is equal to or less than 5%, only a percent or two off a good inverter generator. In my tests, I ran all my electronics (TVs, computers, modem/router, etc) without issue.

    + PROS:
    • Reasonable cost vs features.
    • Excellent power.
    • Good mobility for a heavy generator
    • Above average accessories included
    • Ample connection options
    • Tri-Fuel ready
    • Wide service network
    • Quiet for its size
    - CONS:
    • Oil fill access could be better (included fill funnel is small, but helps somewhat
