Zoom on the Westinghouse WGen10500TFc

To sum up, the Westinghouse WGen10500TFc is a powerful portable generator tailored for:

  • Professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment
  • Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures

In the upcoming sections, you'll discover its power characteristics, the array of outlets it presents, its overall portability, and the additional features it possesses.

Power & Run Time

The Westinghouse WGen10500TFc in use

The Westinghouse WGen10500TFc

The Westinghouse WGen10500TFc delivers 120/240V and features a tri-fuel technology, granting it the capability to utilize gasoline, propane, or natural gas. When utilizing gasoline, it achieves a running wattage of 10,500W and a peak wattage of 13,500W. Upon switching to propane, it benefits from 9,500 rated watts and 12,500 peak watts. Transitioning to natural gas operation provides 8,500W of rated wattage and 10,000W of starting wattage.

The generator, rated for a noise of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a vacuum cleaner), provides flexibility in starting, offering both a classic hand-operated recoil starting mechanism and a practical and straightforward electric starter (battery included). For added user convenience, the WGen10500TFc is equipped with remote starting capabilities (key fob included).

Concerning its running time, the WGen10500TFc, featuring a 9.5 gallons fuel tank, can continuously run for around 9.5 hours at 50% load with a full gasoline tank (consuming fuel at approximately 1 gallons per hour). Alternatively, when utilizing propane, it offers around 7 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.67 GPH) of runtime.

Considering its high Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of less than 23%, it is not recommended to rely on the WGen10500TFc for powering sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel features the following 6 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

In addition, it provides 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports (USB-A) with which you may charge electronics, for example mobile phones or tablets, conveniently.

Since the WGen10500TFc bears a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: it is easily connectible to a breaker box and can power your home in case of a power outage.

Westinghouse's ST Switch Outlet

Picture of the ST Switch outlet

The ST Switch outlet

The WGen10500TFc is what Westinghouse calls Smart Switch Ready. This means that it features a special outlet that allows for an automatic transfer of power in case of a power outage.

To benefit from this feature, you'll need the Westinghouse ST Switch (opens in a new tab), which is not included with the generator.

Simply put, the ST Switch is a cost-effective and versatile portable automatic transfer switch, which can be installed quickly and easily, without an electrician.

Plug the ST Switch into one of your household 120V outlets, plug your appliances to the ST Switch, and connect the WGen10500TFc to the ST Switch via the special outlet and a 120V cord. The generator will automatically turn on when the power goes out, and automatically turn off when the power returns.

Portability

At L28.6 x W29.3 x H26.8 in, the Westinghouse WGen10500TFc boasts a traditional open frame structure, ensuring stability and allowing for convenient maintenance access to components, promoting air circulation. The device has been designed for tough environments and demanding outdoor use.

While the generator is considered to be technically 'portable' (in the sense that you can move it), manually lifting and transporting it may be challenging, due to its high weight of 230 lbs. However, the constrained maneuverability is addressed with the assistance of its wheel kit and its folding handle, allowing for easy shifting once the generator is placed on the ground.

Features

Panel of the Westinghouse WGen10500TFc

The WGen10500TFc's control panel

The control panel of the WGen10500TFc includes a convenient meter, providing voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours data, helpful for the monitoring of its status and activity.

With its built-in fuel gauge, the generator provides quick and convenient gas level checks.

In terms of security, the generator features an automatic low oil shut-off, ensuring peace of mind during its use.

It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.

Apart from the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), which lets you start it right away, the Westinghouse WGen10500TFc also is packed along with the following accessories: funnel, propane hose, oil, natural gas hose with NPT adapter, battery charger, tool kit and key fob. An official running cover is also available, as a separate purchase.

Note

The unit was originally rated to provide 13,500 starting watts on gasoline, and 12,500 on LPG. This rating was later adjusted to respectively 13,000 and 12,000 starting watts. Some retailers may still hold units with the previous rating.

The Westinghouse WGen10500TFc versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen10500TFc compare to multi-fuel generators of similar power (between 10000 and 11000 W).

  • With a dry weight of 230 lbs, the Westinghouse WGen10500TFc falls within the expected weight range for multi-fuel generators in the 10000 to 11000 rated wattage. If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the Genmax GM12000XiT, with a dry weight of just 194 pounds.
  • With noise emissions rated as low as 74 dBA, this generator falls within the typical noise range expected for devices of similar type and power. If you wish to prioritize minimal noise, the Genmax GM12500iET stands out as one of the quietest options among generators of similar power, with a rating of 62 dBA.
  • Compared to multi-fuel devices of similar power, the WGen10500TFc stands out with one of the higher run times, lasting around 9.5 hours at 50% load. Concerning the run times, one of the several devices with a comparable output, offering the highest autonomy, is the Genmax GM15000ET, which is able to run for around 11 hours.
  • Though run time is a significant parameter, it's closely tied to the generator's fuel tank size. To get a comprehensive understanding, fuel efficiency must also be taken into account. This generator has an estimated fuel consumption of roughly 1 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 50% load, rendering it somewhat average compared to devices of a similar output. If fuel consumption is your top priority, we suggest to check out the WEN TF1300iX, which has a fuel consumption of only 0.93 GPH and thus, is one of the most efficient devices in our database.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 10000-11000W multi-fuel generators, the Westinghouse WGen10500TFc is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

About Westinghouse

The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China and Vietnam.

Warranty Information

The Westinghouse WGen10500TFc is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
