Zoom on the Westinghouse WGen10500TFc

In short, the Westinghouse WGen10500TFc is a powerful portable generator adequately designed for:

  • Professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working
  • Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout

Over the following sections, you'll uncover its power characteristics, the selection of outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it includes.

Power & Run Time

The Westinghouse WGen10500TFc in use

The Westinghouse WGen10500TFc

The Westinghouse WGen10500TFc delivers 120/240V and benefits from a tri-fuel technology that allows it to run on gasoline, propane, or natural gas. When gasoline-powered, it enjoys a running wattage of 10,500W and a peak wattage of 13,000W. When propane-powered, it benefits from 9,500 rated watts and 12,000 peak watts. Its natural gas operation offers 8,500W of rated wattage and 10,000W of starting wattage.

With a noise rating of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a shower), the generator features a traditional recoil pull-start mechanism, but also an easy-to-use and reliable electric starter (battery included). For additional convenience, the WGen10500TFc may also be remotely started (key fob included).

Regarding its running time, the WGen10500TFc, with a 9.5 gallons fuel capacity, can operate for around 9.5 hours at 50% load with a full tank of gasoline (fuel consumption around 1 GPH). When using propane, it can run for around 7 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.67 GPH).

Considering its high Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of less than 23%, it is not recommended to rely on the WGen10500TFc for powering sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel includes the following 6 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

Furthermore, it has 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports (USB-A) ideal for charging various electronic devices such as smartphones and tablets.

As it features a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the WGen10500TFc is transfer switch ready: in case of a power outage, you will be easily able to connect it to a breaker box and power your household.

Westinghouse's ST Switch Outlet

Picture of the ST Switch outlet

The ST Switch outlet

The WGen10500TFc is what Westinghouse calls Smart Switch Ready. This means that it features a special outlet that allows for an automatic transfer of power in case of a power outage.

To benefit from this feature, you'll need the Westinghouse ST Switch (opens in a new tab), which is not included with the generator.

Simply put, the ST Switch is a cost-effective and versatile portable automatic transfer switch, which can be installed quickly and easily, without an electrician.

Plug the ST Switch into one of your household 120V outlets, plug your appliances to the ST Switch, and connect the WGen10500TFc to the ST Switch via the special outlet and a 120V cord. The generator will automatically turn on when the power goes out, and automatically turn off when the power returns.

Portability

At L27.2 x W26.1 x H26.5 in, the standard open frame design of the Westinghouse WGen10500TFc delivers stability alongside easy maintenance access to components and good air cooling. The device has been designed for tough environments and demanding outdoor use.

Since the generator weighs 230 lbs, it will be incredibly difficult to manually lift it and transport it, even though it is technically considered to 'be portable' (in the sense that it is movable). However, the lack of maneuverability can be offset with its wheel kit and its folding handle, which allows for convenient shifting once the generator is placed on the ground.

Features

The WGen10500TFc's control panel

The WGen10500TFc and its control panel include a convenient meter, providing voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours data. This feature comes handy when monitoring its status and activity.

Featuring a built-in fuel gauge, the generator offers quick, convenient, and easy gas level checks at a glance.

From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an automatic low oil shut-off, giving you a peace of mind during use.

It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.

Besides the classic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to get you promptly started, the Westinghouse WGen10500TFc also comes with some accessories: propane hose, battery charger, funnel, key fob, oil, natural gas hose with NPT adapter and tool kit are included. An official running cover is also available, as a separate purchase.

Note

The unit was originally rated to provide 13,500 starting watts on gasoline, and 12,500 on LPG. This rating was later adjusted to respectively 13,000 and 12,000 starting watts. Some retailers may still hold units with the previous rating.

The Westinghouse WGen10500TFc versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen10500TFc compare to generators of similar power (between 10000 and 11000 W).

  • In terms of its weight, the Westinghouse WGen10500TFc weighs merely 230 pounds, earning it a spot among the lighter generators within the 10000 to 11000 rated wattage category. If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the A-iPower SUA13000EFI, with a dry weight of just 218 pounds.
  • Because this generator emits noise as low as 74 dBA, it can be considered to have a pretty average expected noise rating for a device of its power. If noise level is one your key decisive factors, you may find the A-iPower SUA13000EFI appealing. It's rated at 69 dBA, making it one of the quietest generators in its power range.
  • The WGen10500TFc, falls within the average autonomy range compared to generators of a roughly same power, with a run time of around 9.5 hours at a 50% load and a full tank. If extended autonomy is what matters most to you, the Powerhorse 13000ES could be an excellent choice, offering one of the longest run times among units in its power category, reaching around 15 hours.
  • While run time matters, it's heavily influenced by the fuel tank's capacity. Hence, it's important to consider fuel efficiency alongside. This generator has an average fuel consumption among comparably powerful devices, as it reaches 1 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 50% load. If you're placing a high priority on fuel consumption, the A-iPower SUA13000EFI, with a low fuel consumption rate of 0.78 GPH, could be an option to consider.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 10000-11000W multi-fuel generators, the Westinghouse WGen10500TFc is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

About Westinghouse

The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China.

Warranty Information

The Westinghouse WGen10500TFc is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
