Description
Zoom on the Westinghouse WGen10500DFc
In short, the Westinghouse WGen10500DFc is a powerful portable generator adequately designed for:
- Professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure
- Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
The subsequent sections will explore in detail its power characteristics, the diverse outlets it provides, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it offers.
Power & Run Time
The Westinghouse WGen10500DFc, equipped with dual-fuel technology and delivering 120/240V, ensures both power and versatility. Running on gasoline, it delivers a running wattage of 10,500W and a starting wattage of 13,500W. On propane, it provides 9,500 running watts and 12,500 starting watts.
With a noise rating of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a shower), the generator features a standard recoil pull-rope starting mechanism, but also an intuitive and practical electric starter (battery included). Furthermore, the WGen10500DFc can be remotely started, providing users with added ease of use (key fob included).
In terms of run time, the WGen10500DFc, boasting a 9.5 gallons fuel tank, can run for around 9.5 hours at 50% load on a full tank of gasoline (with fuel consumption averaging 1 gallons per hour). Additionally, it provides around 7 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.67 GPH) of operation with propane.
Due to the high THD (<23%) of the WGen10500DFc, it is advised against using it for powering sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel provides the upcoming 6 AC outlets:
In addition, it provides 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports (USB-A) providing convenient charging capabilities for mobile phones, tablets, and other electronic devices.
Due to the featured twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the WGen10500DFc is transfer switch ready: you may connect it to a breaker box to power your household during a power outage.
Westinghouse's ST Switch Outlet

The ST Switch outlet
The WGen10500DFc is what Westinghouse calls Smart Switch Ready. This means that it features a special outlet that allows for an automatic transfer of power in case of a power outage.
To benefit from this feature, you'll need the Westinghouse ST Switch (opens in a new tab), which is not included with the generator.
Simply put, the ST Switch is a cost-effective and versatile portable automatic transfer switch, which can be installed quickly and easily, without an electrician.
Plug the ST Switch into one of your household 120V outlets, plug your appliances to the ST Switch, and connect the WGen10500DFc to the ST Switch via the special outlet and a 120V cord. The generator will automatically turn on when the power goes out, and automatically turn off when the power returns.
Portability
Measuring L28.6 x W29.3 x H26.8 in, the classic open frame construction of the Westinghouse WGen10500DFc provides stability while enabling convenient maintenance access to components and adequate air cooling. The generator is designed for outdoor use and demanding environments.
Although this generator is technically considered 'portable' (in the sense that it can be moved), its 230 lbs make may make it challenging to manually lift and transport. Nevertheless, thanks to its wheel kit and its folding handle (a decent solution to its lack of maneuverability), the generator can be easily moved, once placed the ground.
Features
To facilitate status and activity monitoring, a convenient meter, which displays voltage, frequency and lifetime hours are embedded in the control panel of the WGen10500DFc.
With its built-in fuel gauge, the generator provides quick and convenient gas level checks.
As for its security measures, the device features an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), letting you use it with a peace of mind.
It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.
Beyond the standard documentation and an owner's manual to assist with setup, the Westinghouse WGen10500DFc ships with supplementary accessories: funnel, oil, propane hose, tool kit, battery charger and key fob. An official running cover is also available, as a separate purchase.
The Westinghouse WGen10500DFc versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse WGen10500DFc compare to generators of similar power (between 10000 and 11000 W).
- In terms of its weight, the Westinghouse WGen10500DFc weighs merely 230 pounds, earning it a spot among the lighter generators within the 10000 to 11000 rated wattage category. If weight matters to you, one of the champions in this power range is the Genmax GM12000XiT with only 194 pounds.
- At 74 dBA, this generator's noise rating is in line with the expected average for devices within its power category. If you'd like a less noisy alternative, the Genmax GM12500iET is a strong contender. It boasts a noise rating of 62 dBA, placing it among the quietest generators in its power category.
- Thanks to an impressive running time of around 9.5 hours at 50% load, the WGen10500DFc benefits from a higher run time than many generators of a similar output. If concerned with autonomy, one of the products of a comparable power output, which offers the highest run time, is the Genmax GM15000ET, boasting with around 11 hours.
- Run times are important, yet thanks to their dependence on the fuel capacity, they should be judged along with the fuel consumption of the device. Standing at an estimated 1 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 50% load, this generator is somewhat average in this area compared to other devices, within the aforementioned wattage range. If you wish to get a unit of similar power, but with one of the best fuel efficiency, you could consider the WEN TF1300iX, which has an impressively low fuel consumption of 0.93 GPH.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 10000-11000W dual fuel generators, the Westinghouse WGen10500DFc is on the average side of the price range.
Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

About Westinghouse
The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China and Vietnam.
