Description
Zoom on the Westinghouse iGen5000DF
In summary, the Westinghouse iGen5000DF is a quiet and compact portable inverter generator especially useful for:
- RV travellers looking for even more independence
- People occasionally participating in outdoor fairs, festivals or events
- Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
- Tailgating and campground aficionados with the desire of enjoying power anywhere they go
In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed.
Power & Run Time
With its dual-fuel technology, the powerful and versatile Westinghouse iGen5000DF provides an output of 120V. While gasoline-powered, it gives a running wattage of 3,900W along with a peak wattage of 5,000W. While propane-powered, it provides 3,500 rated watts and 4,500 starting watts. Moreover, the parallel capability (parallel cord (opens in a new tab) not included) allows for increasing of power output when paired with another similar or compatible unit, providing increased energy capacity and reliability for diverse needs.
Enjoying a low noise rating of 52 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a conversation at home) which earned this unit its place in our list of the 10 quietest portable generators, it can be started thanks to a simple traditional pull-start mechanism, but also to a user-friendly and efficient electric starter (battery included). Furthermore, for added convenience, the iGen5000DF offers remote starting capabilities (key fob included).
With a fuel capacity of 3.4 gallons, the iGen5000DF can operate for up to 18 hours using gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.19 GPH), or for up to 22 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.21 GPH) using propane.
As the iGen5000DF produces a clean sine wave, with a <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), sensitive electronics may be plugged in the AC outlets safely.
Outlets
The control panel is equipped with the following 3 AC outlets:
Additionally, it offers 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports (USB-A) with which you may charge electronics, for example mobile phones or tablets, conveniently.
Thanks to its TT-30R receptacle (TT stands for 'Travel Trailer'), this Westinghouse generator is RV Ready.
Portability
The Westinghouse iGen5000DF is an inverter generator and features an encased design with the following dimensions: L24.5 x W17.5 x H20 in. This design enhances aesthetics and helps minimize noise levels, distinguishing it from conventional, open frame products. This modern design aims to provide an ideal power solution to recreational users.
Even though this device may be technically portable (as in movable), manipulation and transportation without special equipment can be a challenge, as it weighs 104.7 pounds. Nonetheless, the limited maneuverability is compensated for by utilizing its set of 2 wheels (⌀5.5") and its telecospic handle, which facilitates shifting once the generator is set on the ground.
Features
One of the many iGen5000DF's features is the digital data center, included in its control panel, which conveniently provides information on the lifetime run hours, remaining run time, voltage, fuel level and power output and thus, helps you monitor its activity and status.
In addition to this info, the light indicators show you if the generator is overloaded, its oil levels are insufficient and the generator is ready.
Regarding security, the generator comes with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, providing peace of mind during operation.
In addition to the traditional documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to help you get started promptly, the Westinghouse iGen5000DF also includes several accessories: tool kit, key fob, battery charger, propane hose, oil and funnel. An official running cover and a suitable storage cover are also available, as separate purchases.
The Westinghouse iGen5000DF versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse iGen5000DF compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 3500 and 4500 W).
- Having a dry weight of 104.7 lbs, the Westinghouse iGen5000DF belongs in the expected weight range for inverter generators which produce 3500 to 4500 rated watts. Weight-conscious users may find the Genmax GM4600iAEFIC appealing, as it is one of the top contenders in this power range, weighing just 58.4 pounds.
- As its lowest possible noise is rated at 52 dBA, this inverter generator qualifies as one of the most quiet of the products of similar type and power.
- At 25% load, the iGen5000DF boasts a higher run time than most similarly powerful inverters, reaching up to 18 hours. If prolonged run time is essential to your needs, you could consider the Firman W03661OF, which offers one of the highest autonomy among devices with similar power output, lasting up to 25 hours.
- The run time is important, but also hugely depends on the capacity of the fuel tank and doesn't mean much if we don't talk about fuel consumption as well. Among generators of similar power, this inverter generator stands out with a better fuel efficiency than most, with consumption rates around 0.19 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load. If you're placing a high priority on fuel consumption, the Champion 201319, with a low fuel consumption rate of 0.16 GPH, could be an option to consider.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 3500-4500W dual fuel inverter generators, the Westinghouse iGen5000DF is on the average side of the price range.
Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

About Westinghouse
The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China.
Warranty Information
The Westinghouse iGen5000DF is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.

Can you operate this inside of a RV generator compartment? (Asked March 13, 2021)
You probably can, as long as you are mindful of all safety aspects, and keep at least 3 feet of clearance on all sides of the generator, including overhead.
can you hook up an exhaust pipe to vent to the outside? (Asked April 23, 2021)
Absolutely not! You must always operate your generator outside, where there is enough airflow and ventilation. NEVER run a generator indoors. Carbon monoxide can kill you in minutes.
I live at 5000 feet elevation and sometimes camp above 8000 feet. Do I need to purchase a high altitude jet for this device? (Asked May 06, 2021)
It's absolutely recommended. Note that in addition to the high altitude carburetor kit, you'll also need to purchase a high altitude dual fuel regulator.
With propane as the fuel source, if you turn off the generator via the panel or using the remote fob does the propane continue to flow at some rate and cause an explosion hazard? Or does the generator have a propane control valve that stops the flow when the generator is not running? Having a remote start capability for a generator running on propane would seem pointless if the generator cannot stop the gas flow when necessary. (Asked August 14, 2021)
You would have to manually open/close your propane tank valve.
what is the advantage of the parallel ports. can this offer 240 volt operation with a 2nd generator? thank you (Asked November 22, 2021)
Paralleling 2 units will increase the maximum available current, but will have no effect on voltage.
