Zoom on the Westinghouse iGen4500
In summary, the Westinghouse iGen4500 is a quiet and compact portable inverter generator especially useful for:
- RV travellers who wish to upgrade their experience to another level
- People occasionally participating in sporting competitions, open-air performances and outdoor festivals
- Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
- Tailgating and campground aficionados with the desire of enjoying power anywhere they go
The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, the extra features it benefits from, and any relevant emission compliance details.
Power & Run Time
The Westinghouse iGen4500's core is the 224 cc (7.3 hp) Westinghouse OHV 4-stroke engine, which runs on gasoline. With an output of 120V, it provides a running wattage of 3,700W and a peak wattage of 4,500W. In addition, the device is parallel capable (parallel cord (opens in a new tab) not included) and thus, can be linked to a similar or compatible unit for added power.
At a noise rating of 52 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a refrigerator), this inverter generator can be started via a conventional pull-start mechanism, or a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included). To add further convenience, the iGen4500 can be remotely started (key fob included).
With a full tank, the iGen4500 can operate for up to 18 hours (fuel consumption around 0.19 GPH), thanks to its fuel capacity of 3.4 gallons.
The iGen4500 generates a clean sine wave: providing <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), delicate electronics can be plugged in its AC outlets safely.
Outlets
The control panel includes the following 3 AC outlets:
It also sports 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports with which you may charge electronics, for example mobile phones or tablets, conveniently.
This Westinghouse generator is RV Ready, thanks to its TT-30R receptacle (TT stands for 'Travel Trailer').
Portability
As the Westinghouse iGen4500 is an inverter generator, its encased design (L24.5 x W17.5 x H20 in) offers more aesthetics than a conventional, open frame product. The featured design follows the latest trends and is ideal for easy and recreational use.
While the generator is considered to be technically 'portable' (in the sense that you can move it), manually lifting and transporting it may be challenging, due to its high weight of 104.7 lbs. Nevertheless, thanks to its set of 2 wheels (⌀5.5") and its telecospic handle (a decent solution to its lack of maneuverability), the generator can be easily moved, once placed the ground.
Features
One of the many iGen4500's features is the data center, included in its control panel, which conveniently provides information on the power output, voltage, remaining run time, fuel level and lifetime run hours and thus, helps you monitor its activity and status.
In addition to this info, a light indicator shows you if the generator is on overload.
As far as security is concerned, the generator can be used with a peace of mind, as it features an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker).
Apart from the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), which lets you start it right away, the Westinghouse iGen4500 also is packed along with the following accessories: tool kit, key fob, oil, funnel and battery charger. An official running cover and a suitable storage cover are also available, as separate purchases.
Emissions
The Westinghouse iGen4500 is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Thus, selling and purchasing this generator is allowed in each of the 50 states, including California.
Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, making it usable in forested areas.

The Westinghouse iGen4500 versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse iGen4500 compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 3500 and 4500 W).
- Since the generator weighs in at a dry weight of 104.7 lbs, the Westinghouse iGen4500 belongs in the expected weight range for inverters which can produce between 3500 and 4500 rated watts. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the WEN GN400i, standing at just 66.1 lbs.
- With a lowest possible noise of 52 dBA, this inverter generator places itself amongst the most quiet of the products delivering similar power.
- Offering up to 18 hours of running time on a full tank at 25% load, the iGen4500 is within the average autonomy range of similarly powerful inverter generators. If concerned with autonomy, one of the products of a comparable power output, which offers the highest run time, is the Firman W03661OF, boasting with up to 25 hours.
- While the run time is an important parameter, it is dependent on the fuel tank’s capacity and thus, doesn’t say much on its own unless we consider fuel consumption as well. This inverter generator has an estimated fuel consumption of roughly 0.19 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 25% load, rendering it somewhat average compared to devices of a similar output. If you wish to further improve in the area of fuel efficiency, the Champion 200988, which boasts with a gas consumption of only 0.16 GPH, may be the right generator for you.

About Westinghouse
The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China.
Warranty Information
The Westinghouse iGen4500 is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.

Changing oil for first time. What is the oil capacity of the igen4500? The key fob does not work. Do I need to program it? If so please tell me how. (Asked October 03, 2019)
The oil capacity is about 21 fl.oz. The key fob needs to be paired. To pair your remote to your iGen4500 press and hold the start button for 10 seconds the button will flash. At that point you can press either button on your remote and you have completed the pairing process.
Is a high altitude jet kit available for the unit? We need to use it at 8000 ft above sea level. (Asked June 08, 2020)
There is one, that is recommended up to 7000 ft. Its part number is 140573. Check this PDF file (opens in a new tab) to learn more about it.

User Reviews
Very solid and well built generator, Westinghouse has addressed the choke cable issue, which wasn’t that big of a deal to begin with considering the price you pay for such an outstanding generator. I had purchased the high altitude kit for this and installed the jet myself without any problems, if you are willing to do it, it isn’t very difficult. The thing runs flawlessly, it’s quiet and has great features. Highly recommend this generator to anyone looking for this size and you won’t be disappointed.
what a waste of money can even think about how many hours i spent trying to start and keep this thing running
The igen4500 started without a hitch the first time. The next day It would not start until I manually adjusted the choke because one of the electric choke cables was disconnected. Once connected it starts all of the time. Too bad the factory does not apply a dab of silicone or something is not used to keep the cable in place. Runs real smooth and quiet and the smart panel comes in handy. Now I need to come with a light small clever cover or box to use the generator when it is raining.
I have one and it is superb!
I have had nothing but problems with this generator. I bought it to use with my RV. Fron the beginning, the run-time readout didn’t wotk and it kept tripping offline under light load.
I finally took it in for warranty repairs and found out that inly the parts are civered under warranty, but, the labor is the big expense. The repair shop was not avke yo get the run- time indicator working after replacing parts and many hours of labor. They suggested that i “just look in the tank” to see how much fuel is left.
I am now on an RV trip and can’t get the generator started.
Spend the extra miney and buy a reliable generator. Don’t get stuck with a piece of junk that won’t start when you need it!
