Zoom on the Westinghouse iGen4500
In a nutshell, the Westinghouse iGen4500 is a quiet and compact portable inverter generator mostly geared towards:
- RV travellers wishing to enhance their freedom and nomad lifestyle
- People occasionally participating in sporting competitions, open-air performances and outdoor festivals
- Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures
- Tailgating and campground aficionados with the desire of enjoying power anywhere they go
In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed, including its emission compliance information.
Power & Run Time
The Westinghouse iGen4500 is powered by a 224 cc (7.3 hp) Westinghouse OHV 4-stroke engine. It delivers 120V, runs on gasoline and offers a running wattage of 3700W as well as a peak wattage of 4500W. Moreover, since it is parallel capable (parallel kit (opens in a new tab) not included), its power may be doubled if linked to a second compatible unit.
At a noise rating of 52 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a quiet suburb), this inverter generator can be started via a conventional pull-start mechanism, or a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included). For additional convenience, the iGen4500 may also be remotely started (key fob included).
With a fuel capacity of 3.4 gallons, the iGen4500 may run for up to 18 hours with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.19 GPH).
As the iGen4500 produces a clean sine wave, with a <3% Total Harmonic Disruption (THD), sensitive electronics may be plugged in the AC outlets safely.
The control panel features the upcoming 3 AC outlets:
Furthermore, it has 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports allowing you to conveniently charge electronics such as mobile phones and tablets.
This Westinghouse generator is RV Ready, thanks to its TT-30R receptacle (TT stands for 'Travel Trailer').
Thanks to its closed inverter generator design (L24.5 x W17.5 x H20.5 in), the Westinghouse iGen4500, is more esthetical than a typical, open frame generator. This modern design aims to provide an ideal power solution to recreational users.
The iGen4500's dry weight of 98 lbs lets you use its power anywhere needed. Furthermore, once placed on the floor, effortless displacement is possible thanks to its wheel kit (⌀5.5") and its telecospic handle.
To help you monitor the iGen4500's status and activity, its control panel is equipped with a digital data center, giving you information on the lifetime run hours, power output, voltage, fuel level and remaining run time.
In addition to this info, the device’s light indicator will display if the generator is on overload.
The fuel level of the inverter generator can be determined quickly, easily, and conveniently with the help of its built-in fuel gauge.
Security-wise, this product benefits from an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), which gives you a complete peace of mind when using it.
While the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), helpful for starting the device promptly, come with the Westinghouse iGen4500, the following accessories are also included: battery charger, key fob, oil, tool kit and funnel.
The Westinghouse iGen4500 is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. It can therefore be sold and purchased in all 50 states, including California.
Moreover, it features a spark arrestor and therefore, can be used in forested areas.
The Westinghouse iGen4500 versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse iGen4500 compare to generators of similar power (between 3500 and 4500 W).
- Weight-wise, the Westinghouse iGen4500 has only 98 lbs, which renders it one of the lighter generators which produce 3500 to 4500 rated watts. If weight matters to you, one of the champions in this power range is the WEN GN400i with only 66.1 pounds.
- With a lowest possible noise of 52 dBA, this inverter generator places itself amongst the most quiet of the products delivering similar power.
- With a run time of up to 18 hours at 25% load, the iGen4500 has one of the highest run times, compared to its similarly powerful peers.
- The run time is important, but also hugely depends on the capacity of the fuel tank and doesn't mean much if we don't talk about fuel consumption as well. This inverter generator, with an estimated fuel consumption of just 0.19 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load, is one of the more fuel efficient generators, for the previously mentioned wattage range. If fuel consumption is your top priority, we suggest to check out the Westinghouse iGen4200, which has a fuel consumption of only 0.14 GPH and thus, is one of the most efficient devices in our database.
Here's a list of the most popular specific comparisons:
As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 3500-4500W generators, the Westinghouse iGen4500 is on the average side of the price range.
Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
The bottom line
- In the expected price range
- Several accessories included
- RV Ready
- Remote start
- Parallel capable
- Lightweight for its kind (98 lbs)
- Quiet for its power (52 dBA)
- High run time
- Fuel efficient
The Westinghouse iGen4500 doesn't have any notably low specs.

The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators – which are the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, several sources report that they are in many cases manufactured in China.
The Westinghouse iGen4500 is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.

Changing oil for first time. What is the oil capacity of the igen4500? The key fob does not work. Do I need to program it? If so please tell me how. (Asked October 03, 2019)
The oil capacity is about 21 fl.oz. The key fob needs to be paired. To pair your remote to your iGen4500 press and hold the start button for 10 seconds the button will flash. At that point you can press either button on your remote and you have completed the pairing process.
Is a high altitude jet kit available for the unit? We need to use it at 8000 ft above sea level. (Asked June 08, 2020)
There is one, that is recommended up to 7000 ft. Its part number is 140573. Check this PDF file (opens in a new tab) to learn more about it.
