Zoom on the Westinghouse iGen4500
In summary, the Westinghouse iGen4500 is a quiet and compact portable inverter generator especially useful for:
- RV travellers wishing to enhance their freedom and nomad lifestyle
- People occasionally participating in outdoor fairs, festivals or events
- Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials
- Camping and tailgating hobbyists looking for a portable power source
In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed, including its emission compliance information.
Power & Run Time
The Westinghouse iGen4500 houses a 224 cc (7.3 hp) Westinghouse OHV 4-stroke engine, which provides 120V, consumes gasoline and delivers a running wattage of 3700W along with a peak wattage of 4500W. In addition, as it is parallel capable (parallel kit (opens in a new tab) not included), this power can be increased when linked to another similar or compatible unit.
At a noise rating of 52 dBA (just slightly more noisy than rainfall), this inverter generator can be started via a simple traditional pull-start mechanism, or a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included). Moreover, to offer you even more convenience, the iGen4500 can also be remotely started (key fob included).
With a full tank, the iGen4500 can operate for up to 18 hours (fuel consumption around 0.19 GPH), thanks to its fuel capacity of 3.4 gallons.
Delicate electronics can be plugged in an AC outlets safely, as the iGen4500 generates a clean sine wave, reaching a <3% Total Harmonic Disruption (THD).
Outlets
The control panel provides the upcoming 3 AC outlets:
Furthermore, it has 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports with which charging of electronics like mobile phones and tablets is made convenient.
This Westinghouse generator is RV Ready, as it features a TT-30R receptacle (TT stands for 'Travel Trailer').
Portability
Since the Westinghouse iGen4500 is an inverter generator, its closed design (L24.5 x W17.5 x H20 in) has an esthetical advantage over conventional, open frame devices. The design follows the contemporary trends and is perfect for recreationally generating power.
Since the generator weighs 104.7 lbs, it will be incredibly difficult to manually lift it and transport it, even though it is technically considered to 'be portable' (in the sense that it is movable). Nevertheless, thanks to its set of 2 wheels (⌀5.5") and its telecospic handle (a decent solution to its lack of maneuverability), the generator can be easily moved, once placed the ground.
Features
A digital data center, one of the features of the iGen4500's control panel, gives you information on the power output, voltage, remaining run time, lifetime run hours and fuel level, and thus, is helpful for the monitoring of its activity and status.
In addition to this info, the device’s light indicator will display if the generator is overloaded.
As for its security measures, the device features an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), letting you use it with a peace of mind.
Besides the classic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to get you promptly started, the Westinghouse iGen4500 also comes with some accessories: battery charger, tool kit, funnel, oil and key fob are included. A storage cover is also available, as a separate purchase.
Emissions
The Westinghouse iGen4500 is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Therefore, its sale and purchase are permitted in all of the 50 states, including California.
Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, so it is adequate for use in forested areas.

The Westinghouse iGen4500 versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse iGen4500 compare to generators of similar power (between 3500 and 4500 W).
- Since the generator weighs in at a dry weight of 104.7 lbs, the Westinghouse iGen4500 belongs in the expected weight range for devices which can produce between 3500 and 4500 rated watts. If weight is your top priority, one of the champions in this power category is the WEN GN400i, weighing just 66.1 pounds.
- With a lowest noise rating of 52 dBA, the inverter generator is one of the most quiet of the generators of similar power.
- As the iGen4500 offers up to 18 hours run time on a full tank at a 25% load, it falls within the average autonomy range among the generators of a similar power. Furthermore, considering the run times, one of the generators which have a roughly same power output, with the highest autonomy, is the Champion 200914, as it provides up to 22 hours.
- Even though run times are undoubtedly important, they are dependent on the fuel capacity to a large extent. For a more wholesome picture, we must take into consideration the fuel consumption of the generator. This inverter generator has an estimated fuel consumption of roughly 0.19 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 25% load, rendering it somewhat average compared to devices of a similar output. If not satisfied with the afore-mentioned fuel consumption, you may wish to check out the Westinghouse iGen4200. With a fuel consumption of as little as 0.14 GPH, it is one of the most efficient generators currently on the market.

About Westinghouse
The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, several sources report that they are in many cases manufactured in China.
Warranty Information
The Westinghouse iGen4500 is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.

Changing oil for first time. What is the oil capacity of the igen4500? The key fob does not work. Do I need to program it? If so please tell me how. (Asked October 03, 2019)
The oil capacity is about 21 fl.oz. The key fob needs to be paired. To pair your remote to your iGen4500 press and hold the start button for 10 seconds the button will flash. At that point you can press either button on your remote and you have completed the pairing process.
Is a high altitude jet kit available for the unit? We need to use it at 8000 ft above sea level. (Asked June 08, 2020)
There is one, that is recommended up to 7000 ft. Its part number is 140573. Check this PDF file (opens in a new tab) to learn more about it.
Where can I find a replacement battery for the Westinghouse iGen4500? (Asked August 30, 2021)
Battery part number is 511019. It can be bought here (opens in a new tab).

I have had nothing but problems with this generator. I bought it to use with my RV. Fron the beginning, the run-time readout didn’t wotk and it kept tripping offline under light load.
I finally took it in for warranty repairs and found out that inly the parts are civered under warranty, but, the labor is the big expense. The repair shop was not avke yo get the run- time indicator working after replacing parts and many hours of labor. They suggested that i “just look in the tank” to see how much fuel is left.
I am now on an RV trip and can’t get the generator started.
Spend the extra miney and buy a reliable generator. Don’t get stuck with a piece of junk that won’t start when you need it!
I have one and it is superb!
The igen4500 started without a hitch the first time. The next day It would not start until I manually adjusted the choke because one of the electric choke cables was disconnected. Once connected it starts all of the time. Too bad the factory does not apply a dab of silicone or something is not used to keep the cable in place. Runs real smooth and quiet and the smart panel comes in handy. Now I need to come with a light small clever cover or box to use the generator when it is raining.
what a waste of money can even think about how many hours i spent trying to start and keep this thing running
