Zoom on the Westinghouse iGen4500
In a nutshell, the Westinghouse iGen4500 is a quiet and compact portable inverter generator mostly geared towards:
- RV travellers looking for even more independence
- People occasionally participating in outdoor fairs, festivals or events
- Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
- Camping and tailgating hobbyists looking for a portable power source
In the following paragraphs, we shall explore the power characteristics, available outlets, portability, and any additional features of the device, along with its emission compliance information.
Power & Run Time
The Westinghouse iGen4500's engine, 224 cc (7.3 hp) Westinghouse OHV 4-stroke, fueled by gasoline, can deliver 120V. It provides a running wattage of 3,700W and reaches a peak wattage of 4,500W. Additionally, as the generator is parallel capable (parallel cord (opens in a new tab) not included), it can be linked to a second unit for more power.
Enjoying a noise rating of 52 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a conversation at home), this inverter generator can be started thanks to a simple traditional pull-start mechanism, but also to a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included). To add further convenience, the iGen4500 can be remotely started (key fob included).
The fuel capacity of 3.4 gallons allows the iGen4500 to operate for up to 18 hours with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.19 GPH).
The iGen4500 produces a clean sine wave: thanks to a <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), your sensitive electronics can be safely plugged in the AC outlets.
Outlets
The control panel features the upcoming 3 AC outlets:
Additionally, it features 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports with which you may charge electronics, for example mobile phones or tablets, conveniently.
With its TT-30R receptacle (TT as in 'Travel Trailer'), this Westinghouse generator is RV Ready.
Portability
As the Westinghouse iGen4500 is an inverter generator, its encased design (L24.5 x W17.5 x H20 in) offers more aesthetics than a conventional, open frame product. This modern design aims to provide an ideal power solution to recreational users.
Although this generator is technically considered 'portable' (in the sense that it can be moved), its 104.7 lbs make it incredibly difficult to manually lift and transport. However, this lack of maneuverability is compensated by its set of 2 wheels (⌀5.5") and its telecospic handle, with which you can conveniently shift it, once it's on the ground.
Features
A digital data center, one of the features of the iGen4500's control panel, gives you information on the voltage, power output, remaining run time, fuel level and lifetime run hours, and thus, is helpful for the monitoring of its activity and status.
In addition to this info, the device’s light indicator will display if the generator is on overload.
Security-wise, this product benefits from an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, which gives you a complete peace of mind when using it.
Apart from the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), which lets you start it right away, the Westinghouse iGen4500 also is packed along with the following accessories: funnel, battery charger, key fob, oil and tool kit. A storage cover is also available, as a separate purchase.
Emissions
The Westinghouse iGen4500 is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. It can therefore be sold and purchased in all 50 states, including California.
Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, which makes it suitable for use in forested areas.

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse iGen4500 compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 3500 and 4500 W).
- Having a dry weight of 104.7 lbs, the Westinghouse iGen4500 belongs in the expected weight range for inverter generators which produce 3500 to 4500 rated watts. If weight is your top priority, one of the champions in this power category is the WEN GN400i, weighing just 66.1 pounds.
- Since this inverter generator is rated for a lowest possible noise of 52 dBA, it can be considered as one of the most quiet of the products generating similar power.
- Given that the iGen4500 reaches an autonomy of up to 18 hours with a full tank and at 25% load, it is placed within the average autonomy range of similarly powerful inverter generators. Concerning the run times, one of the several devices with a comparable output, offering the highest autonomy, is the Firman W03661OF, which is able to run for up to 25 hours.
- The run time is important, but also hugely depends on the capacity of the fuel tank and doesn't mean much if we don't talk about fuel consumption as well. This inverter generator reaches an estimated fuel consumption of 0.19 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 25% load, making it average, for the previously mentioned wattage range. If not satisfied with the afore-mentioned fuel consumption, you may wish to check out the Champion 200988. With a fuel consumption of as little as 0.16 GPH, it is one of the most efficient generators currently on the market.

About Westinghouse
The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, several sources report that they are in many cases manufactured in China.

Changing oil for first time. What is the oil capacity of the igen4500? The key fob does not work. Do I need to program it? If so please tell me how. (Asked October 03, 2019)
The oil capacity is about 21 fl.oz. The key fob needs to be paired. To pair your remote to your iGen4500 press and hold the start button for 10 seconds the button will flash. At that point you can press either button on your remote and you have completed the pairing process.

User Reviews
Very solid and well built generator, Westinghouse has addressed the choke cable issue, which wasn’t that big of a deal to begin with considering the price you pay for such an outstanding generator. I had purchased the high altitude kit for this and installed the jet myself without any problems, if you are willing to do it, it isn’t very difficult. The thing runs flawlessly, it’s quiet and has great features. Highly recommend this generator to anyone looking for this size and you won’t be disappointed.
what a waste of money can even think about how many hours i spent trying to start and keep this thing running
The igen4500 started without a hitch the first time. The next day It would not start until I manually adjusted the choke because one of the electric choke cables was disconnected. Once connected it starts all of the time. Too bad the factory does not apply a dab of silicone or something is not used to keep the cable in place. Runs real smooth and quiet and the smart panel comes in handy. Now I need to come with a light small clever cover or box to use the generator when it is raining.
I have one and it is superb!
I have had nothing but problems with this generator. I bought it to use with my RV. Fron the beginning, the run-time readout didn’t wotk and it kept tripping offline under light load.
I finally took it in for warranty repairs and found out that inly the parts are civered under warranty, but, the labor is the big expense. The repair shop was not avke yo get the run- time indicator working after replacing parts and many hours of labor. They suggested that i “just look in the tank” to see how much fuel is left.
I am now on an RV trip and can’t get the generator started.
Spend the extra miney and buy a reliable generator. Don’t get stuck with a piece of junk that won’t start when you need it!
