Power & Run Time

The Westinghouse iGen12000DFc in use

The Westinghouse iGen12000DFc

With its dual-fuel technology, the powerful and versatile Westinghouse iGen12000DFc provides an output of 120/240V. While gasoline-powered, it gives a running wattage of 9,000W along with a peak wattage of 12,000W. While propane-powered, it provides 8,100 rated watts and 11,000 starting watts. Furthermore, its parallel capability (parallel cables (opens in a new tab) not included) allows power output to increase when connected to another similar or compatible unit, ensuring expanded energy capacity and reliability for various applications.

The inverter generator, rated for a noise of 64 dBA (just slightly more noisy than an office), provides flexibility in starting, offering both a traditional recoil pull-start mechanism and an intuitive and practical electric starter (battery included). Moreover, the iGen12000DFc boasts remote starting functionality, adding another layer of convenience (key fob included).

As for its running time, the iGen12000DFc, along with its 7.9 gallons fuel capacity, can run for up to 19 hours with a full tank filled with gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.42 GPH). If propane is used, it can operate for up to 9 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.52 GPH).

Sensitive electronics can be safely plugged in the AC outlets, as the iGen12000DFc produces a clean sine wave, with a <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD).

Outlets

The control panel is equipped with the following 4 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

For RV owners with a 50-amp service, this Westinghouse unit is RV-ready, boasting a 14-50R outlet. In addition, since it boasts a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the iGen12000DFc is engineered to be transfer switch ready, ensuring easy integration with your breaker box to provide backup power to your home during outages.

Westinghouse's ST Switch Outlet

Picture of the ST Switch outlet

The ST Switch outlet

The iGen12000DFc is what Westinghouse calls Smart Switch Ready. This means that it features a special outlet that allows for an automatic transfer of power in case of a power outage.

To benefit from this feature, you'll need the Westinghouse ST Switch (opens in a new tab), which is not included with the generator.

Simply put, the ST Switch is a cost-effective and versatile portable automatic transfer switch, which can be installed quickly and easily, without an electrician.

Plug the ST Switch into one of your household 120V outlets, plug your appliances to the ST Switch, and connect the iGen12000DFc to the ST Switch via the special outlet and a 120V cord. The generator will automatically turn on when the power goes out, and automatically turn off when the power returns.

Portability

The Westinghouse iGen12000DFc is an inverter generator and features an encased design with the following dimensions: L30.2 x W25.2 x H26.6 in. This design enhances aesthetics and helps minimize noise levels, distinguishing it from conventional, open frame products. The generator has a contemporary design, convenient for recreationally generating power.

Even at 189 lbs, the generator is categorized as 'portable,' suggesting its movability, although its weight may impede its portability. However, the lack of maneuverability can be offset with its set of 2 wheels and its folding handle, which allows for convenient shifting once the generator is placed on the ground.

Features

Panel of the Westinghouse iGen12000DFc

The iGen12000DFc's control panel

Featuring a digital data center on its control panel, the iGen12000DFc offers you convenient access to essential information about the fuel level, power output, lifetime run hours, frequency and voltage, facilitating effective monitoring of its activity and status.

In addition to this info, light indicators on the device will notify you if its oil levels are insufficient, the generator is ready and the generator is overloaded.

In terms of security, the generator features an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), ensuring peace of mind during its use.

It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.

Beyond the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to assist with setup, the Westinghouse iGen12000DFc ships with supplementary accessories: key fob, propane hose, tool kit, oil, funnel and battery charger.

The Westinghouse iGen12000DFc versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse iGen12000DFc compare to generators of similar power (between 8500 and 9500 W).

  • Considering its weight, the Westinghouse iGen12000DFc registers at a modest 189 pounds, placing it among the lightest generators in the 8500 to 9500 rated wattage selection.
  • With a noise rating as low as 64 dBA, this inverter generator is among the quieter options available in its power range. If noise level is one your key decisive factors, you may find the DuroMax XP11000iHT appealing. It's rated at 61 dBA, making it one of the quietest generators in its power range.
  • As the iGen12000DFc features an autonomy of up to 19 hours at 25% load, it has one of the highest run times in comparison to the other generators of its power range.
  • While run time matters, it's heavily influenced by the fuel tank's capacity. Hence, it's important to consider fuel efficiency alongside. With an estimated gasoline consumption of 0.42 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load, this inverter generator is among the more fuel-efficient of the products in the above-mentioned wattage range. If you are concerned with gasoline efficiency, having a fuel consumption of just 0.39 GPH, the DuroMax XP11000iHT is a device you could look out for.

About Westinghouse

The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China and Vietnam.

Warranty Information

The Westinghouse iGen12000DFc is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
