Description
Zoom on the Westinghouse ecoGen10000
In short, the Westinghouse ecoGen10000 is a powerful portable inverter generator adequately designed for:
- Food van owners who know that just a short power outage could lose them hundreds of dollars
- Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures
- Professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure
- RV travellers looking for even more independence
Over the following sections, you'll uncover its power characteristics, the selection of outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it includes.
Power & Run Time
The Westinghouse ecoGen10000's design includes a gasoline-fueled 420 cc OHV 4-stroke engine. With a 120/240V output, it gives a running wattage of 7,600W and also a peak wattage of 10,000W. Additionally, as the generator is parallel capable (parallel kit not included), it can be linked to a second unit for more power.
Enjoying a noise rating of 72 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a shower), this inverter generator can be started thanks to a simple traditional pull-start mechanism, but also to a user-friendly and efficient electric starter (battery included). For added user convenience, the ecoGen10000 is equipped with remote starting capabilities (key fob included).
The fuel capacity of 5.3 gallons allows the ecoGen10000 to operate for up to 12 hours with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.44 GPH).
Thanks to its low <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), the ecoGen10000 produces a clean sine wave output, making it safe for your sensitive electronics when utilizing the AC outlets.
Outlets
The control panel is equipped with the following 6 AC outlets:
If you own an RV with a 50-amp service, you can consider this Westinghouse unit as RV-ready, as it features a 14-50R outlet. In addition, since it boasts a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the ecoGen10000 is engineered to be transfer switch ready, ensuring easy integration with your breaker box to provide backup power to your home during outages.
Westinghouse's ST Switch Outlet

The ST Switch outlet
The ecoGen10000 is what Westinghouse calls Smart Switch Ready. This means that it features a special outlet that allows for an automatic transfer of power in case of a power outage.
To benefit from this feature, you'll need the Westinghouse ST Switch (opens in a new tab), which is not included with the generator.
Simply put, the ST Switch is a cost-effective and versatile portable automatic transfer switch, which can be installed quickly and easily, without an electrician.
Plug the ST Switch into one of your household 120V outlets, plug your appliances to the ST Switch, and connect the ecoGen10000 to the ST Switch via the special outlet and a 120V cord. The generator will automatically turn on when the power goes out, and automatically turn off when the power returns.
Portability
At L24 x W26.7 x H25.1 in, the standard open frame design of the Westinghouse ecoGen10000 delivers stability alongside easy maintenance access to components and good air cooling. The generator is designed for ideal use outdoors and in rough environments.
Despite its 147.7 lbs, the generator falls under the category of 'portable,' signifying its movability, although its weight may hinder easy portability. Nonetheless, the limited maneuverability is compensated for by utilizing its set of wheels and its folding handle, which facilitates shifting once the generator is set on the ground.
Features
The control panel of the ecoGen10000 is equipped with a convenient meter, which displays voltage, frequency and lifetime hours, aiding in monitoring its status and activity.
In addition to this info, the generator's light indicators provide visual feedback when the generator is ready, its oil levels are insufficient and the generator is on overload.
Thanks to its built-in fuel gauge, the inverter generator allows you to quickly, conveniently, and easily check the gas level at a glance.
From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), giving you a peace of mind during use.
It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.
With the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), letting you start the generator quickly, the Westinghouse ecoGen10000 also comes with several accessories, including: battery charger, funnel, key fob, oil and tool kit.
The Westinghouse ecoGen10000 versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Westinghouse ecoGen10000 compare to generators of similar power (between 7500 and 8500 W).
- In terms of its dry weight, the Westinghouse ecoGen10000 stands at only 147.7 lbs, meaning that is one of the lighter devices of the 7500-8500 rated wattage category If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the Genmax GM10500XiT, with a dry weight of just 123.5 pounds.
- With noise emissions reaching as low as 72 dBA, this inverter generator has a noise level typical for devices of its power category. If you are concerned with noise, check out the DuroMax XP9500iH, which is one of the least noisy generators in its power range, with a noise rating of just 61 dBA.
- Regarding its autonomy, the ecoGen10000 can run for up to 12 hours at a 25% load, aligning it with the lower performers in its power range. If run time is one of your main concerns, the DuroMax XP10000EH could be worth looking at. It boasts one of the highest run times among units of comparable power, lasting up to 22 hours.
- While the run time is an important parameter, it is dependent on the fuel tank's capacity and thus, doesn't say much on its own unless we consider fuel consumption as well. At a 25% load, the inverter generator consumes an estimated 0.44 gallons of gasoline per hour, falling within the average consumption range of units with similar output. If minimizing fuel usage is one of your key priorities, the DuroMax XP9500iH is one of the most efficient devices with similar power output, with a gasoline consumption of only 0.34 gallons per hour.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 7500-8500W inverter generators, the Westinghouse ecoGen10000 is on the cheap side of the price range.
It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.

About Westinghouse
The US based Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a legacy subsidiary of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded in 1886. While the company has been acquired and merged into the American CBS, the Westinghouse name remains as the brand name for many of their electrical solutions, which stretch across the scale from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators – the main product of the Outdoor Power Equipment branch of Westinghouse – used to be manufactured by Westpro Power Systems, which was bought in 2016 by Midwest Equipment. Lawn equipment, such as trimmers and blowers, is also sold under the Westinghouse brand name. All of their products are designed in the US. However, they are in many cases manufactured in China and Vietnam.
