Description
Zoom on the WEN GN400iX
The WEN GN400iX is the newer version of the GN400i. It's a compact and lightweight portable inverter generator mostly geared towards:
- RV travellers looking for even more independence
- People occasionally participating in outdoor fairs, festivals or events
- Handcrafting enthusiasts who wish to work on-the-go
- Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures
- Camping and tailgating hobbyists looking for a portable power source
In the following paragraphs, we shall explore the power characteristics, available outlets, portability, and any additional features of the device.
Power & Run Time
The WEN GN400iX is powered by a 212 cc OHV 4-stroke engine. It delivers 120V, runs on gasoline and offers a running wattage of 3,500W as well as a peak wattage of 4,000W. In addition, the parallel capability (WEN Parallel Connection Kit (opens in a new tab) not included) empowers increasing of power output when linked to another similar or compatible unit, ensuring expanded energy capacity and reliability for various applications.
With a noise rating of 67 dBA (less noisy than an office), the inverter generator's ignition is facilitated by a standard recoil pull-rope starting mechanism.
Featuring a 1.85 gallon fuel tank, the GN400iX can provide power for around 7 hours at 50% load on a full tank (with fuel consumption averaging 0.26 gallons per hour).
The GN400iX generates a clean sine wave with <1.2% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), ensuring minimal electrical noise and fluctuations. This feature makes it ideal for powering sensitive electronics, providing stable and reliable AC power through the outlets.
Outlets
The control panel includes the following 3 AC outlets:
Furthermore, it showcases 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports (USB-A) enabling convenient charging of devices like mobile phones and tablets.
Thanks to its TT-30R receptacle (TT stands for 'Travel Trailer'), this WEN generator is RV Ready.
Portability
With its L19.8 x W13.8 x H18.9 in dimensions, the open frame structure of the WEN GN400iX guarantees stability, simplified maintenance access to components, and better air cooling than enclosed units. The featured design is ideal for the outdoors and all tough environments.
As the GN400iX's weight is only 70 lbs, it can follow you and your power needs anywhere. Furthermore, the generator's open frame construction allows for easy grabbing and movement.
Features
Several light indicators serve to show you when the generator is ready, the generator is on overload and its oil levels are insufficient.
Equipped with a built-in fuel gauge, the inverter generator facilitates swift gas level checks.
From a security standpoint, the product offers an automatic low oil shut-off, a low fuel automatic shutdown and an overload protection (circuit breaker), allowing you to use it with a peace of mind.
The unit also benefits from WEN's CO Watchdog carbon monoxide detection. This system measures the accumulation of poisonous CO gas while the generator is running. If the level of CO gas gets too high, the CO Watchdog system will automatically shut down the generator.
Apart from the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to facilitate setup, the WEN GN400iX features extra accessories: tool kit, funnel and 2 altitude kits. An official storage cover is also available, as a separate purchase.
The WEN GN400iX versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the WEN GN400iX compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 3000 and 4000 W).
- Weight-wise, the WEN GN400iX has only 70 lbs, which renders it one of the lighter inverter generators which produce 3000 to 4000 rated watts. If weight is your top priority, one of the champions in this power category is the Pulsar PGD40iSCO, weighing just 46 pounds.
- This inverter generator, with its lowest possible noise rated at 67 dBA falls into the more noisy category, compared to other devices of a similar running wattage. If you wish to prioritize minimal noise, the Westinghouse iGen4000DFc stands out as one of the quietest options among generators of similar power, with a rating of 52 dBA.
- Regarding its autonomy, the GN400iX can run for around 7 hours at a 50% load, aligning it with the lower performers in its type and power range. If runtime is a priority for you, the Westinghouse iGen5000DF stands out as one of the generators with the longest run time in its power range, providing around 15 hours of continuous use.
- Run time is a key metric, but it's dependent on the generator's fuel tank capacity. Therefore, discussing fuel efficiency is necessary for a complete understanding. This inverter generator provides better fuel efficiency than most others in its wattage range, consuming approximately 0.26 GPH (gallon per hour) at 50% load. If you are concerned with gasoline efficiency, having a fuel consumption of just 0.22 GPH, the Pulsar PGD40iSCO is a device you could look out for.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 3000-4000W inverter generators, the WEN GN400iX is on the cheap side of the price range.
It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.

User Reviews
I bought this for back-up power during outages and to use while camping in our RV. I love the fact that it is RV ready and will power out 13.5kw A/C and other appliances simultaneously. I have only run it on propane, and really don’t plan on using gasoline unless necessary. It starts easily and runs very quietly. I run it on our RV’s onboard propane and it will run all weekend on our RV tanks with gas to spare. I would highly recommend this generator to any of my friends.
