Description
Zoom on the WEN GN400i
In summary, the WEN GN400i is a compact and lightweight portable inverter generator especially useful for:
- RV travellers looking for even more independence
- Occasional participants of outdoor events, competitions, concerts and festivals
- DIYers who wish to improve their efficiency with tools
- Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures
- Camping and tailgating buffs looking to enhance their experience
In the forthcoming sections, you'll delve into its power characteristics, the various outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the additional features it boasts.
Power & Run Time
The WEN GN400i is powered by a 212 cc OHV 4-stroke engine. It delivers 120V, runs on gasoline and offers a running wattage of 3,500W as well as a peak wattage of 4,000W. Furthermore, its parallel capability (WEN Parallel Connection Kit (opens in a new tab) not included) allows power output to increase when connected to another similar or compatible unit, ensuring expanded energy capacity and reliability for various applications.
Operating with a noise level of 67 dBA (less noisy than background music), the inverter generator starts up via a conventional pull-start mechanism.
The GN400i's fuel tank holds 1.85 gallon, ensuring uninterrupted operation for around 7 hours at 50% load with a full tank (fuel consumption approximately 0.26 GPH).
As the GN400i produces a clean sine wave, with a <1.2% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), sensitive electronics may be plugged in the AC outlets safely.
Outlets
The control panel features 3 AC outlets as follows:
In addition, it provides 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports with which charging of electronics like mobile phones and tablets is made convenient.
With its TT-30R receptacle (TT as in 'Travel Trailer'), this WEN generator is RV Ready.
Portability
At L19.8 x W13.8 x H18.9 in, the standard open frame design of the WEN GN400i delivers stability alongside easy maintenance access to components and good air cooling. This type of design is ideal for tough environments and heavy outdoor use.
With a dry weight of 66.1 lbs, the GN400i is manageable, ensuring it can accompany you wherever you need power. Moreover, its open frame design makes it incredibly easy to grasp the frame in order to change its location.
Features
When its oil levels are insufficient, the generator is overloaded and the generator is ready, you will be informed by the featured light indicators.
With its built-in fuel gauge, the inverter generator provides quick and convenient gas level checks.
The fuel shutoff feature turns off the flow of fuel, allowing for the GN400i to use up the remaining fuel from the carburetor before automatically shutting down. This helps fight the build-up and blockages caused by stagnant fuel inside the carburetor, minimizing maintenance while prolonging the unit’s lifespan.
In terms of security, the generator features an overload protection (circuit breaker), an automatic low oil shut-off and a low fuel automatic shutdown, ensuring peace of mind during its use.
Beyond the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to assist with setup, the WEN GN400i ships with supplementary accessories: funnel, 2 altitude kits, tool kit and oil. An official storage cover is also available, as a separate purchase.

The WEN GN400i versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the WEN GN400i compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 3000 and 4000 W).
- When it comes to weight, the WEN GN400i tips the scales at just 66.1 pounds, making it one of the lighter inverter generators in the 3000 to 4000 rated wattage range. Regarding dry weight, one of the champions in the same power range is the Pulsar PGD40iSCO, with a dry weight of only 46 lbs.
- In comparison to generators with a similar running wattage, this inverter generator's lowest emitted noise of 67 dBA can be considered noisy. If you'd like a less noisy alternative, the Westinghouse iGen4500DF is a strong contender. It boasts a noise rating of 52 dBA, placing it among the quietest generators in its power category.
- Regarding its autonomy, the GN400i can run for around 7 hours at a 50% load, aligning it with the lower performers in its type and power range. For those prioritizing autonomy, the Westinghouse iGen4500DF could be considered, as it offers one of the longest run times among generators with similar power output, reaching around 15 hours.
- Run time is a key metric, but it's dependent on the generator's fuel tank capacity. Therefore, discussing fuel efficiency is necessary for a complete understanding. This inverter generator has a better fuel efficiency than other units in the aforementioned output range, consuming approximately 0.26 GPH (gallon per hour) at 50% load. To prioritize fuel savings, we advise considering the Pulsar PGD40iSCO, which stands out for its gasoline efficiency, consuming just 0.22 gallons per hour.
Here's a list of the most popular specific comparisons:
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 3000-4000W inverter generators, the WEN GN400i is on the cheap side of the price range.
It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.
