Description

With 8000 starting watts and 6500 running watts on gasoline or 7200 surge watts and 5850 rated watts on propane, the WEN 120V/240V Electric Start Dual Fuel Generator is durable enough for the jobsite and compact enough for easy transport.

Zoom on the WEN DF8000X

To sum up, the WEN DF8000X is a portable generator tailored for:

  • Food truck owners who do not wish to see their business interrupted under any circumstances
  • Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
  • RV travellers wishing to enhance their freedom and nomad lifestyle

The subsequent sections will explore in detail its power characteristics, the diverse outlets it provides, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it offers.

Power & Run Time

Thanks to its dual-fuel technology, the WEN DF8000X provides a 120/240V output and offers both versatility and power. When utilizing gasoline, it delivers a running wattage of 6,500W and a starting wattage of 8,000W. Alternatively, when operating on propane, it provides 5,850 running watts and 7,200 starting watts.

Equipped with a classic hand-operated recoil starting mechanism and a user-friendly and efficient electric starter (battery included), this generator provides versatile starting capabilities.

In terms of running time, the DF8000X, equipped with a 6.7 gallons fuel tank, is capable of running continuously for around 10.5 hours at 50% load on a full gasoline tank (with fuel consumption estimated at around 0.64 gallons per hour). When utilizing propane, it provides around 5.5 hours (estimation based on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.85 GPH) of operation.

Outlets

The control panel features the upcoming 6 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R)
120V 30A (TT-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

In addition, it provides 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A (cigarette lighter style) receptacle offering a convenient battery charging option.

The inclusion of a TT-30R receptacle (TT for 'Travel Trailer') makes this WEN generator RV Ready, ideal for providing power to recreational vehicles. In addition, equipped with a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the DF8000X is engineered to be transfer switch ready, enabling simple hookup to your breaker box to provide backup power for your home during blackouts.

Portability

With a size of L28.5 x W24.6 x H25 in, the WEN DF8000X features an open frame design, providing stability and simplified maintenance access to components, enhancing air circulation. The device has been designed for tough environments and demanding outdoor use.

While weighing 138.8 lbs, the generator is classified as 'portable,' indicating its mobility, albeit its heftiness may limit portability in specific situations. However, the constrained maneuverability is addressed with the assistance of its wheel kit and its folding handle, allowing for easy shifting once the generator is placed on the ground.

Features

The DF8000X's control panel

The control panel of the DF8000X is equipped with a convenient meter, showing voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours metrics, aiding in monitoring its status and activity.

In addition to this info, a light indicator on the device will notify you if the oil level is too low.

The generator allows for a quick, easy and convenient assessment of its gas level, as it is equipped with a built-in fuel gauge.

From a security standpoint, the product offers an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), allowing you to use it with a peace of mind.

The unit also benefits from WEN's CO Watchdog carbon monoxide detection. This system measures the accumulation of poisonous CO gas while the generator is running. If the level of CO gas gets too high, the CO Watchdog system will automatically shut down the generator.

Besides the classic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to get you promptly started, the WEN DF8000X also comes with some accessories: propane hose, funnel and tool kit are included.

The WEN DF8000X versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the WEN DF8000X compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 6000 and 7000 W).

  • In terms of its weight, the WEN DF8000X weighs merely 138.8 pounds, earning it a spot among the lighter dual fuel generators within the 6000 to 7000 rated wattage category. Regarding dry weight, one of the champions in the same power range is the Pulsar PGDA70BiSCO, with a dry weight of only 118 lbs.
  • Compared to dual fuel devices of similar power, the DF8000X stands out with one of the higher run times, lasting around 10.5 hours at 50% load. Furthermore, considering the run times, one of the generators which have a roughly same power output, with the highest autonomy, is the Champion 201463, as it provides around 11 hours.
  • Though run time is a significant parameter, it's closely tied to the generator's fuel tank size. To get a comprehensive understanding, fuel efficiency must also be taken into account. This generator doesn't excel in fuel efficiency when compared to others of its kind: it consumes approximately 0.64 GPH at a 50% load. If fuel consumption is your top priority, we suggest to check out the Pulsar PGDA70BiSCO, which has a fuel consumption of only 0.42 GPH and thus, is one of the most efficient devices in our database.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 6000-7000W dual fuel generators, the WEN DF8000X is on the cheap side of the price range.

It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.

On the weaknesses portion of the Wen DF8000x it lists no 50 amp output. In the specs page it lists the Running amps (@120/240V) 54.2/27.1 amps 48.8/24.4 amps. Maybe it is my ignorance on the topic, but I am curious about this. I am wanting to run an electric hot water heater, along with a refrigerator and some lights with this generator. Now I am worried that this is not the right generator for me. (price is my big selling point, as I will only use this about once or twice a year). (Asked January 06, 2025)

"No 50-amp output" as a weakness does not mean that the unit cannot deliver 50-amp. It means that the unit does not have a dedicated 50-amp outlet, which would allow you to power a single appliance requiring that amperage directly.
