Description

With 8000 starting watts and 6500 running watts on gasoline or 7200 surge watts and 5850 rated watts on propane, the WEN 120V/240V Electric Start Dual Fuel Generator is durable enough for the jobsite and compact enough for easy transport.

Zoom on the WEN DF8000X

To sum up, the WEN DF8000X is a portable generator tailored for:

  • Food van owners who know that just a short power outage could lose them hundreds of dollars
  • Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
  • RV travellers who wish to upgrade their experience to another level

The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the extra features it benefits from.

Power & Run Time

Thanks to its dual-fuel technology, the WEN DF8000X provides a 120/240V output and offers both versatility and power. When utilizing gasoline, it delivers a running wattage of 6,500W and a starting wattage of 8,000W. Alternatively, when operating on propane, it provides 5,850 running watts and 7,200 starting watts.

Equipped with a standard recoil pull-rope starting mechanism and an intuitive and practical electric starter (battery included), this generator provides versatile starting capabilities.

Concerning its running time, the DF8000X, featuring a 6.7 gallons fuel tank, can continuously run for around 10.5 hours at 50% load with a full gasoline tank (consuming fuel at approximately 0.64 gallons per hour). Alternatively, when utilizing propane, it offers around 5.5 hours (estimation based on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.85 GPH) of runtime.

Outlets

The control panel is equipped with the following 6 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R)
120V 30A (TT-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

It also sports 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A (cigarette lighter style) receptacle making battery charging a breeze.

With its TT-30R receptacle (TT as in 'Travel Trailer'), this WEN generator is RV Ready. In addition, with its twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the DF8000X is designed to be transfer switch ready, allowing easy connection to your breaker box for powering your home during a blackout.

Portability

At L28.5 x W24.6 x H25 in, the WEN DF8000X boasts a traditional open frame structure, ensuring stability and allowing for convenient maintenance access to components, promoting air circulation. The design is ideal for rough environments and demanding outdoor use.

Despite its 138.8 lbs, the generator falls under the category of 'portable,' signifying its movability, although its weight may hinder easy portability. However, its challenging mobility is solved by its wheel kit and its folding handle, which will ease its displacement, once it is on the floor.

Features

The DF8000X's control panel

To facilitate status and activity monitoring, a convenient meter, offering voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours readings are embedded in the control panel of the DF8000X.

In addition to this info, a light indicator on the device will notify you if the oil level is too low.

Benefiting from its built-in fuel gauge, the generator allows for easy and immediate gas level inspections.

Regarding security, the generator comes with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, providing peace of mind during operation.

The unit also benefits from WEN's CO Watchdog carbon monoxide detection. This system measures the accumulation of poisonous CO gas while the generator is running. If the level of CO gas gets too high, the CO Watchdog system will automatically shut down the generator.

With the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), letting you start the generator quickly, the WEN DF8000X also comes with several accessories, including: propane hose, funnel and tool kit.

The WEN DF8000X versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the WEN DF8000X compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 6000 and 7000 W).

  • Considering its weight, the WEN DF8000X registers at a modest 138.8 pounds, placing it among the lighter dual fuel generators in the 6000 to 7000 rated wattage selection. If weight is a key factor for your needs, the Pulsar PGDA70BiSCO is noteworthy for being one of the top contenders in this power range, with a dry weight of 118 pounds.
  • As the DF8000X features an autonomy of around 10.5 hours at 50% load, it has a higher run time than an average generator of its type and power range. Concerning the run times, one of the several devices with a comparable output, offering the highest autonomy, is the Champion 201463, which is able to run for around 11 hours.
  • Run times are important, yet thanks to their dependence on the fuel capacity, they should be judged along with the fuel consumption of the device. This generator is not fuel-efficient compared to devices of similar output: its estimated fuel consumption stands at 0.64 GPH at a 50% load. If you're placing a high priority on fuel consumption, the Pulsar PGDA70BiSCO, with a low fuel consumption rate of 0.42 GPH, could be an option to consider.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 6000-7000W dual fuel generators, the WEN DF8000X is on the cheap side of the price range.

It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.

On the weaknesses portion of the Wen DF8000x it lists no 50 amp output. In the specs page it lists the Running amps (@120/240V) 54.2/27.1 amps 48.8/24.4 amps. Maybe it is my ignorance on the topic, but I am curious about this. I am wanting to run an electric hot water heater, along with a refrigerator and some lights with this generator. Now I am worried that this is not the right generator for me. (price is my big selling point, as I will only use this about once or twice a year). (Asked January 06, 2025)

"No 50-amp output" as a weakness does not mean that the unit cannot deliver 50-amp. It means that the unit does not have a dedicated 50-amp outlet, which would allow you to power a single appliance requiring that amperage directly.
