Description
Zoom on the WEN DF8000X
In summary, the WEN DF8000X is a portable generator especially useful for:
- Food truck owners who do not wish to see their business interrupted under any circumstances
- Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials
- RV travellers looking for even more independence
In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed.
Power & Run Time
Featuring dual-fuel technology, the WEN DF8000X provides 120/240V, and offers both power and versatility. Running on gasoline, it delivers a running wattage of 6,500W and a starting wattage of 8,000W. When propane-powered, it offers 5,850 running watts and 7,200 starting watts.
This generator features a traditional recoil pull-start mechanism and also a practical and straightforward electric starter (battery included).
As for its running time, the DF8000X, along with its 6.7 gallons fuel capacity, can run for around 10.5 hours at 50% load with a full tank filled with gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.64 GPH). If propane is used, it can operate for around 5.5 hours (estimation based on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.85 GPH).
Outlets
The control panel features 6 AC outlets as follows:
Moreover, it presents 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A (cigarette lighter style) receptacle enabling simple battery charging for added ease.
The inclusion of a TT-30R receptacle (TT for 'Travel Trailer') makes this WEN generator RV Ready, ideal for providing power to recreational vehicles. In addition, the DF8000X's twist-lock L14-30R receptacle makes it transfer switch ready, enabling hassle-free connection to your breaker box for powering your home during outages.
Portability
Measuring L28.5 x W24.6 x H25 in, the WEN DF8000X showcases a classic open frame layout, guaranteeing stability and simple maintenance access to components, while facilitating air circulation. The design is ideal for rough environments and demanding outdoor use.
With a weight of 138.8 lbs, the generator is still labeled as 'portable,' denoting its ability to be moved, although its heaviness might restrict easy portability. Still, once it is on the ground, its wheel kit and its folding handle can easily solve the issue of low mobility and allow for easy relocation of the device.
Features
The control panel of the DF8000X includes a convenient meter, showing voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours metrics, helpful for the monitoring of its status and activity.
In addition to this info, a light indicator serves to show you when its oil levels are insufficient.
The generator includes a built-in fuel gauge, a quick, easy and convenient method of checking the device’s gas level.
As far as security is concerned, the generator can be used with a peace of mind, as it features an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off.
The unit also benefits from WEN's CO Watchdog carbon monoxide detection. This system measures the accumulation of poisonous CO gas while the generator is running. If the level of CO gas gets too high, the CO Watchdog system will automatically shut down the generator.
Apart from the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to facilitate setup, the WEN DF8000X features extra accessories: propane hose, funnel and tool kit.
The WEN DF8000X versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the WEN DF8000X compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 6000 and 7000 W).
- In terms of its weight, the WEN DF8000X weighs merely 138.8 pounds, earning it a spot among the lighter dual fuel generators within the 6000 to 7000 rated wattage category. If weight matters to you, one of the champions in this power range is the Pulsar PGDA70BiSCO with only 118 pounds.
- Since the DF8000X boasts with a run time of around 10.5 hours at 50% load, it can be safely judged as a device of a higher run time than most dual fuel generators of a comparable output. If runtime is a priority for you, the Champion 201463 stands out as one of the generators with the longest run time in its power range, providing around 11 hours of continuous use.
- While the run time is an important parameter, it is dependent on the fuel tank's capacity and thus, doesn't say much on its own unless we consider fuel consumption as well. When operating at 50% load, the generator's fuel consumption is estimated at 0.64 GPH, placing it within the average range of gasoline usage among similarly powerful devices. To prioritize fuel savings, we advise considering the Pulsar PGDA70BiSCO, which stands out for its gasoline efficiency, consuming just 0.42 gallons per hour.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 6000-7000W dual fuel generators, the WEN DF8000X is on the cheap side of the price range.
It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.

Unlike many websites, we did our best to research each of the specs above. That being said, we are not immune to making the occasional mistake or omission. Should you notice any missing or incorrect values, don't hesitate to suggest improvements so we can address the issue.
* Propane runtime is our own estimation, based on a 20 lbs tank and NIST 1994 GGE (Gasoline Gallon Equivalent) formula: 5.66 lbs of propane = 1 gal of gasoline.

On the weaknesses portion of the Wen DF8000x it lists no 50 amp output. In the specs page it lists the Running amps (@120/240V) 54.2/27.1 amps 48.8/24.4 amps. Maybe it is my ignorance on the topic, but I am curious about this. I am wanting to run an electric hot water heater, along with a refrigerator and some lights with this generator. Now I am worried that this is not the right generator for me. (price is my big selling point, as I will only use this about once or twice a year). (Asked January 06, 2025)
"No 50-amp output" as a weakness does not mean that the unit cannot deliver 50-amp. It means that the unit does not have a dedicated 50-amp outlet, which would allow you to power a single appliance requiring that amperage directly.
