Description

Zoom on the WEN DF680iX

In short, the WEN DF680iX is a compact portable inverter generator adequately designed for:

  • RV travellers who wish to upgrade their experience to another level
  • People occasionally participating in sporting competitions, open-air performances and outdoor festivals
  • Food truck owners who want to ensure that their business is fully self-contained and does not rely on potentially unreliable external power
  • Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout

Over the following sections, you'll uncover its power characteristics, the selection of outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it includes.

Power & Run Time

The WEN DF680iX in use

The WEN DF680iX

Thanks to its dual-fuel technology, the WEN DF680iX provides a 120/240V output and offers both versatility and power. When utilizing gasoline, it delivers a running wattage of 5,100W and a starting wattage of 6,800W. Alternatively, when operating on propane, it provides 4,500 running watts and 6,000 starting watts. In addition, the device is parallel capable (parallel kit not included) and thus, can be linked to a similar or compatible unit for added power.

WEN’s Auto Fuel Selection technology automatically selects the fuel source (LPG or gasoline) depending on availability and prioritizes LPG. Thus, if a propane tank with enough LPG is connected, the generator will automatically use LPG. If no propane tank is connected, or if there is not enough LPG remaining in the tank, the generator will use gasoline.

Operating with a noise rating of 64 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a normal conversation), this inverter generator offers two starting options: a classic hand-operated recoil starting mechanism and a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included).

The running time of the DF680iX, with its 2.9 gallons fuel capacity, can reach around 6.1 hours at 50% load on a full tank of gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.48 GPH). With propane, it can reach around 9 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.52 GPH).

The DF680iX generates a clean sine wave with <1.2% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), ensuring minimal electrical noise and fluctuations. This feature makes it ideal for powering sensitive electronics, providing stable and reliable AC power through the outlets.

Outlets

The control panel includes the following 4 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R)
120V 30A (TT-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

Moreover, it comes equipped with 3 DC outlets: there's a 12V 8A (cigarette lighter style) receptacle offering a convenient battery charging option and two 5V USB ports (USB-A) perfect for conveniently charging mobile phones, tablets, and other electronic devices.

This WEN generator is RV Ready, thanks to its TT-30R receptacle (TT stands for 'Travel Trailer'). In addition, since it boasts a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the DF680iX is engineered to be transfer switch ready, ensuring easy integration with your breaker box to provide backup power to your home during outages.

Portability

The WEN DF680iX's characteristic encased inverter generator design (L22.8 x W16.6 x H19.7 in) provides an aesthetic advantage and contributes to quieter operation compared to any ordinary, open frame product. This type of design is the most modern and convenient way to recreationally generate power.

The 94.8 lbs of the DF680iX's dry weight enables you to use it anywhere you will ever need. Moreover, once it’s on the ground, its set of 2 wheels and its telescopic handle will allow you to shift it without effort.

Features

Panel of the WEN DF680iX

The DF680iX's control panel

The DF680iX's control panel is equipped with a digital data center, furnishing detailed information on the frequency, lifetime run hours, power output, voltage and fuel level for you to easily track its activity and status.

In addition to this info, the device's light indicators will illuminate to indicate if its oil levels are insufficient, the generator is overloaded and the generator is ready.

The fuel shutoff feature turns off the flow of fuel, allowing for the DF680iX to use up the remaining fuel from the carburetor before automatically shutting down. This helps fight the build-up and blockages caused by stagnant fuel inside the carburetor, minimizing maintenance while prolonging the unit’s lifespan.

Regarding security, the generator comes with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), providing peace of mind during operation.

The unit also benefits from WEN's CO Watchdog carbon monoxide detection. This system measures the accumulation of poisonous CO gas while the generator is running. If the level of CO gas gets too high, the CO Watchdog system will automatically shut down the generator.

Along the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), useful for starting the generator right away, the WEN DF680iX's package also includes these accessories: oil, propane hose, tool kit and funnel.

The WEN DF680iX versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the WEN DF680iX compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 4500 and 5500 W).

  • Regarding its weight, the WEN DF680iX only weighs in at 94.8 pounds, which means it's one of the lighter inverter generators in the 4500-5500 rated wattage range. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the Pulsar PGX60BiSRCO, standing at just 93.5 lbs.
  • With noise emissions reaching as low as 64 dBA, this inverter generator has a noise level typical for devices of its type and power category. If noise level is one your key decisive factors, you may find the Honda EU7000iS appealing. It's rated at 52 dBA, making it one of the quietest generators in its power range.
  • The DF680iX's autonomy is somewhat low end compared to devices of its type and power range, as it reaches only around 6.1 hours at 50% load on a full tank. If runtime is a priority for you, the Briggs & Stratton Q6500 QuietPower stands out as one of the generators with the longest run time in its power range, providing around 10 hours of continuous use.
  • Though run time is a significant parameter, it's closely tied to the generator's fuel tank size. To get a comprehensive understanding, fuel efficiency must also be taken into account. This inverter generator doesn't excel in fuel efficiency when compared to others of its kind: it consumes approximately 0.48 GPH at a 50% load. If gasoline efficiency is at the top of your list, you may want to have a look at the DuroMax XP7000iHT, which has great fuel efficiency, with a gas consumption of only 0.38 gallons per hour.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 4500-5500W dual fuel inverter generators, the WEN DF680iX is on the cheap side of the price range.

It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.

This is a well-made unit for a great price. It’s one of the lowest cost models that offer 240v output for back-feeding a panel. Uses a better-known Zonsen 224ci engine and seems to use high-quality components overall. This is a great option for emergency backup and general use. Highly recommended.

    + PROS:
    • Cost
    • Value
    • 240v output w/parallel option
    • Electric start
    • Dual Fuel
    • Useful digital display
    • Good build quality
    • Good US customer service
    • Easy open side panels

I purchased this unit as I wanted it to power my camper when I am dry camping / boondocking and to power my home in the event of any power outages.

Package was shipped and arrived with all of its parts and nothing was damaged!!! yay!!!

I poured in the supplied Oil and connected the battery. Simple. Added some gasoline and it started on the first pull.
I ran it for the first 4 hours on varying loads / speeds then changed the oil. No large amounts of metal in the oil.
I completed an oil change and put in Mobile 1 – 5W-30 Fully synthetic.
I ran it for the second 4 hours on varying loads / speeds then changed the oil. No large amounts of metal in the oil.
I completed the second oil change with Mobile 1 – 5W-30 fully Synthetic and did not notice and strange amounts of metal in the oil as some customers had reported after completing the Engine break in.

I ran several tests to see how well this unit performed.
I connected my Camper and ran the 13,500 BYU AC and via my WatchDog it was drawing about 12-13 amps of power. Generator handled the surge very well in both the economy mode and running full speed every time the AC cycled on and off.

I then connected the Generator up to my house and flipped the 120/240 switch on the generator.
In my house I turned off the breaker for my electric stove, Electric hot water tank, Air conditioning and some small Electric heat we have in our porch. I was running every light and electronic in the house and was only drawing about 8-10 amps on each Leg of the 240 feed. Knowing that in the summer My who house Ac draws about 12 amps of power I will need to turn off some items in my house so there would be enough room for the AC to run.

Price is the biggest advantage of this unit. I was looking at the pulsar 7K unit but did not like the $1200.00 price tag. This WEN DF680iX price tag is the steal of the century.

    + PROS:
    • Weight = 100 pounds and easy to move.
    • Telescoping handle.
    • 120/240 - Able to power Camper and whole house.
    • Duel Fuel - able to switch to propane while running to store to get gasoline and vise versa.
    • Reasonable outlets - Allows me to plug in everything I want.
    - CONS:
    • Small gas tank and limited run time on gas vs propane.
    • You have to choose 120 or 240. Can not have both at same time.
