Description
Zoom on the WEN DF475X
The WEN DF475X is the newer version of the DF475T. It's a compact portable generator especially useful for:
- RV travellers wishing to enhance their freedom and nomad lifestyle
- Occasional participants of outdoor events, competitions, concerts and festivals
- Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials
In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed.
Power & Run Time
Featuring dual-fuel technology, the WEN DF475X provides 120/240V, and offers both power and versatility. Running on gasoline, it delivers a running wattage of 3,800W and a starting wattage of 4,750W. When propane-powered, it offers 3,500 running watts and 4,350 starting watts.
This generator can be started via a traditional recoil pull-start mechanism, or a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included).
The running time of the DF475X, with its 4 gallons fuel capacity, can reach around 11 hours at 50% load on a full tank of gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.36 GPH). With propane, it can reach around 7 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.67 GPH).
Outlets
The control panel features the upcoming 3 AC outlets:
Furthermore, it has 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A (cigarette lighter style) receptacle with which you may charge your batteries with ease.
Because the DF475X is equipped with a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: it can power your home during a power outage, as it can be easily connected to your breaker box to power your household.
Portability
With dimensions of L23.2 x W17.5 x H18.5 in, the traditional open frame design of the WEN DF475X ensures stability while allowing easy maintenance access to components and promoting effective air cooling. The device has been designed for tough environments and demanding outdoor use.
While weighing 105.8 lbs, the generator is classified as 'portable,' indicating its mobility, albeit its heftiness may limit portability in specific situations. Nonetheless, the limited maneuverability is compensated for by utilizing its wheel kit and its folding handle, which facilitates shifting once the generator is set on the ground.
Features
The generator includes a built-in fuel gauge, a quick, easy and convenient method of checking the device’s gas level.
Security-wise, this product benefits from an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, which gives you a complete peace of mind when using it.
The unit also benefits from WEN's CO Watchdog carbon monoxide detection. This system measures the accumulation of poisonous CO gas while the generator is running. If the level of CO gas gets too high, the CO Watchdog system will automatically shut down the generator.
Apart from the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to facilitate setup, the WEN DF475X features extra accessories: oil and propane hose.
The WEN DF475X versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the WEN DF475X compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 3500 and 4500 W).
- At 105.8 lbs in dry weight, the WEN DF475X fits well within the typical weight bracket for dual fuel generators producing 3500 to 4500 rated watts. If weight matters to you, one of the champions in this power range is the Pulsar PGX5250BiXCO with only 64 pounds.
- At a 50% load, the DF475X offers around 11 hours of runtime on a full tank, placing it within the average autonomy range among dual fuel generators of similar power level. If run time is one of your main concerns, the Westinghouse iGen5000DF could be worth looking at. It boasts one of the highest run times among units of comparable power, lasting around 15 hours.
- Run time is a key metric, but it's dependent on the generator's fuel capacity. Therefore, discussing fuel efficiency is necessary to get the full picture. This generator has an estimated fuel consumption of roughly 0.36 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 50% load, rendering it somewhat average compared to devices of a similar output. If you're placing a high priority on fuel consumption, the Westinghouse iGen5000DF, with a low fuel consumption rate of 0.23 GPH, could be an option to consider.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 3500-4500W dual fuel generators, the WEN DF475X is on the cheap side of the price range.
It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.
The bottom line
- Inexpensive
- Dual fuel
- CO Watchdog
- Electric start
- Decent weight (105.8 lbs)
- Decent run time
- Decent fuel efficiency
- No data center
- No remote start
