Description
Zoom on the WEN DF280iX
To sum up, the WEN DF280iX is a compact and lightweight portable inverter generator tailored for:
- Camping and tailgating buffs looking to enhance their experience
- DIYers who wish to improve their efficiency with tools
The subsequent sections will explore in detail its power characteristics, the diverse outlets it provides, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it offers.
Power & Run Time
Thanks to its dual-fuel technology, the WEN DF280iX delivers 120V and offers power and versatility. When gasoline-powered, it benefits from a running wattage of 2,250W and a peak wattage of 2,800W. When propane-powered, it has 2,000 rated watts and 2,800 peak watts. Moreover, the parallel capability (parallel kit not included) allows for doubling of power output when paired with another similar or compatible unit, providing increased energy capacity and reliability for diverse needs.
At a noise rating of 60 dBA (just as noisy as background music), the inverter generator is started via a standard recoil pull-rope starting mechanism.
Regarding its running time, the DF280iX, with a 1.58 gallon fuel tank, can operate for around 9 hours at 50% load with a full gasoline tank (with fuel consumption estimated at around 0.18 gallons per hour). It also offers around 13.9 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.34 GPH) of operation when using propane.
Sensitive electronics can be safely plugged in the AC outlets, as the DF280iX produces a clean sine wave, with a <1.2% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD).
Outlets
The control panel features the following 2 AC outlets:
Furthermore, it showcases 3 DC outlets: there's a 12V 8A (cigarette lighter style) receptacle offering a convenient battery charging option and two 5V USB ports (USB-A) ideal for charging various electronic devices such as smartphones and tablets.
Portability
With an inverter generator design, the WEN DF280iX features a closed construction (L19.7 x W11.6 x H18.7 in), enhancing aesthetics and ensuring reduced noise levels, offering a distinct advantage over standard, open frame generators. The design follows the contemporary trends and is perfect for recreationally generating power.
With a weight of only 45.2 lbs, the DF280iX is deisgned to be a lightweight and easily portable generator. The device can be easily moved by just one person and thus, its power may be enjoyed on-the-go. With its handle (molded in the case), carrying it becomes a breeze, adding to its convenience.
Features
The generator's light indicators provide visual feedback when the generator is on overload, the oil level is too low and the generator is ready.
The inverter generator allows for a quick, easy and convenient assessment of its gas level, as it is equipped with a built-in fuel gauge.
In terms of security, the generator features an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), ensuring peace of mind during its use.
The unit also benefits from WEN's CO Watchdog carbon monoxide detection. This system measures the accumulation of poisonous CO gas while the generator is running. If the level of CO gas gets too high, the CO Watchdog system will automatically shut down the generator.
Along the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), useful for starting the generator right away, the WEN DF280iX's package also includes these accessories: propane hose, tool kit and funnel.
The WEN DF280iX versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the WEN DF280iX compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 1500 and 2500 W).
- In terms of its dry weight, the WEN DF280iX stands at only 45.2 lbs, meaning that is one of the lighter inverters of the 1500-2500 rated wattage category In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the Genmax GM2000i, standing at just 34.2 lbs.
- When compared to other units producing a similar running wattage, this inverter generator and its lowest emitted noise of 60 dBA stand out for being on the louder side. If noise is a concern for you, you could consider the Honda EU2200i, which is one of the least noisy generators in its power range, rated at 48 dBA.
- Among its inverters with similar power, the DF280iX offers one of the higher run times, running for around 9 hours at 50% load. For those prioritizing autonomy, the Westinghouse iGen2200 could be considered, as it offers one of the longest run times among generators with similar power output, reaching around 10 hours.
- Run times are important, yet thanks to their dependence on the fuel capacity, they should be judged along with the fuel consumption of the device. The inverter generator utilizes approximately 0.18 GPH of gasoline at a 50% load, placing it within the typical range of fuel consumption seen in products of comparable wattage. If you wish to get a unit of similar power, but with one of the best fuel efficiency, you could consider the Westinghouse iGen2200, which has an impressively low fuel consumption of 0.11 GPH.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 1500-2500W dual fuel inverter generators, the WEN DF280iX is on the cheap side of the price range.
It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.
The bottom line

User Reviews
After doing some research, I settled on this generator because it has everything that I wanted (runs on gasoline or propane, inverter/quiet, USB and 12 volt charging plugs, etc.) and because of the price. It did not come with an hour meter but I was able to add one for $10. I’m in the process of breaking in the generator now and will update my review with any issues if they come up. Very happy with my purchase.
