Description
Zoom on the WEN DF1100X
The WEN DF1100X is the newer version of the DF1100T. It's a powerful portable generator mostly geared towards:
- Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials
- Professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment
In the upcoming sections, you'll discover its power characteristics, the array of outlets it presents, its overall portability, and the additional features it possesses.
Power & Run Time
Thanks to its dual-fuel technology, the WEN DF1100X delivers 120/240V and offers power and versatility. When gasoline-powered, it benefits from a running wattage of 8,300W and a peak wattage of 11,000W. When propane-powered, it has 7,500 rated watts and 9,500 peak watts.
This generator features a simple traditional pull-start mechanism and also a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included).
In terms of its run time capability, the DF1100X, furnished with a 6.6 gallons fuel tank, can maintain operations for around 8.5 hours at 50% load on a full tank of gasoline (with fuel consumption averaging 0.78 gallons per hour). It also provides around 3 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.57 GPH) of operation with propane.
As the DF1100X exhibits a THD of less than 15%, which is relatively high, it is best avoided for powering sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel features the upcoming 6 AC outlets:
In addition, it provides 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A (cigarette lighter style) receptacle with which you may charge your batteries with ease.
Though it may not be labeled as 'RV Ready,' this WEN generator offers the benefit of hassle-free RV connectivity through its L5-30R receptacle, allowing you to easily power your RV with the assistance of an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, thanks to its twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the DF1100X is transfer switch ready, facilitating easy hookup to your breaker box to provide backup power for your home during blackouts.
Portability
With a size of L27.3 x W20.6 x H21.9 in, the WEN DF1100X features an open frame design, providing stability and simplified maintenance access to components, enhancing air circulation. The device has been designed for tough environments and demanding outdoor use.
Despite its weight of 213.8 lbs, the generator is considered 'portable,' signifying its capability to be moved, albeit its heaviness may hinder easy transport. Nonetheless, the limited maneuverability is compensated for by utilizing its wheel kit and its folding handle, which facilitates shifting once the generator is set on the ground.
Features
The control panel of the DF1100X is equipped with a convenient meter showing you voltage, frequency and lifetime hours, aiding in monitoring its status and activity.
A built-in fuel gauge allows for a quick, easy and convenient check of the fuel level of the generator.
In terms of security, the generator features an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, ensuring peace of mind during its use.
The unit also benefits from WEN's CO Watchdog carbon monoxide detection. This system measures the accumulation of poisonous CO gas while the generator is running. If the level of CO gas gets too high, the CO Watchdog system will automatically shut down the generator.
In addition to the traditional documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to help you get started promptly, the WEN DF1100X also includes several accessories: propane hose and oil. An official storage cover is also available, as a separate purchase.
The WEN DF1100X versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the WEN DF1100X compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 7500 and 8500 W).
- As its weight is 213.8 pounds, the WEN DF1100X falls in the expected weight range of the dual fuel devices in the 7500-8500 rated wattage category. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the Pulsar PGL9000BCO, standing at just 149 lbs.
- In terms of its autonomy, the DF1100X can operate for around 8.5 hours at a 50% load, placing it within the lower bracket among generators of similar type and power range. If extended autonomy is what matters most to you, the Firman H07553 could be an excellent choice, offering one of the longest run times among units in its power category, reaching around 12 hours.
- Autonomy holds its importance, however, it is largely dependent on the generator’s fuel capacity and so, it is nonsensible to discuss it without mentioning fuel efficiency as well. Among generators of similar output, this generator ranks somewhat poorly in fuel efficiency, with an estimated consumption of 0.78 GPH at a 50% load. If minimizing fuel usage is one of your key priorities, the Powerhorse s10500id is one of the most efficient devices with similar power output, with a gasoline consumption of only 0.59 gallons per hour.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 7500-8500W dual fuel generators, the WEN DF1100X is on the cheap side of the price range.
It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.
The bottom line
