Description
Zoom on the WEN DF1100X
The WEN DF1100X is the newer version of the DF1100T. It's a powerful portable generator mostly geared towards:
- Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures
- Professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure
In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed, including its emission compliance information.
Power & Run Time
The dual-fuel technology of the WEN DF1100X allows for an output of 120/240V and provides superb power and versatility. If gasoline-powered, the device provides a running wattage of 8,300W and a starting wattage of 11,000W. If propane-powered, it gives 7,500 rated watts and 9,500 starting watts.
Its starting mechanisms include a conventional pull-start mechanism and a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included).
The running time of the DF1100X, with its 6.6 gallons fuel capacity, can reach around 8.5 hours at 50% load on a full tank of gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.78 GPH). With propane, it can reach around 3 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.57 GPH).
Since the DF1100X has a somewhat high THD (<15%), it is advisable to not use it for the powering of sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel features the following 6 AC outlets:
It also sports 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A (cigarette lighter style) receptacle with which charging your batteries is made easy.
Even though this WEN generator isn't quite RV Ready, its L5-30R receptacle allows an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, as it features a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the DF1100X is transfer switch ready: in case of a power outage, you will be easily able to connect it to a breaker box and power your household.
Portability
With its dimensions of L27.3 x W20.6 x H21.9 in, the conventional, open frame design of the WEN DF1100X offers stability and allows the generator to be raised above ground level. This type of design is ideal for tough environments and heavy outdoor use.
Since the generator weighs 213.8 lbs, it will be incredibly difficult to manually lift it and transport it, even though it is technically considered to 'be portable' (in the sense that it is movable). However, this lack of maneuverability is compensated by its wheel kit and its folding handle, with which you can conveniently shift it, once it's on the ground.
Features
The control panel of the DF1100X includes a convenient meter showing you voltage, frequency and lifetime hours, helpful for the monitoring of its status and activity.
The generator allows for a quick, easy and convenient assessment of its gas level, as it is equipped with a built-in fuel gauge.
From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, giving you a peace of mind during use.
The unit also benefits from WEN's CO Watchdog carbon monoxide detection. This system measures the accumulation of poisonous CO gas while the generator is running. If the level of CO gas gets too high, the CO Watchdog system will automatically shut down the generator.
Apart from the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), which lets you start it right away, the WEN DF1100X also is packed along with the following accessories: oil and propane hose. An official storage cover is also available, as a separate purchase.
Emissions
The WEN DF1100X is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. It can therefore be sold and purchased in all 50 states, including California.
Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, which makes it suitable for use in forested areas.
The WEN DF1100X versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the WEN DF1100X compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 7500 and 8500 W).
- Since the generator weighs in at a dry weight of 213.8 lbs, the WEN DF1100X belongs in the expected weight range for dual fuel devices which can produce between 7500 and 8500 rated watts. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the Cummins Onan P9500df, standing at just 194 lbs.
- Regarding its autonomy, the autonomy of the DF1100X, reaching around 8.5 hours at a 50% load, can be considered as low end, compared to other dual fuel products of a roughly equal output. If you consider autonomy on a single full tank as one of the deciding factors, one of the generators in the same power range that offers the highest run time is the Firman H07552, with around 12 hours.
- Autonomy holds its importance, however, it is largely dependent on the generator’s fuel capacity and so, it is nonsensible to discuss it without mentioning fuel efficiency as well. This generator is rather wasteful, compared to other devices within the aforementioned output range, when it comes to gasoline consumption, as it reaches roughly 0.78 GPH at a 50% load. If fuel consumption is your top priority, we suggest to check out the Pulsar PG10000B16, which has a fuel consumption of only 0.55 GPH and thus, is one of the most efficient devices in our database.
Price comparison
As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 7500-8500W dual fuel generators, the WEN DF1100X is on the cheap side of the price range.
It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.
The bottom line
- Inexpensive
- Dual Fuel
- CO Watchdog
- Several accessories included
- GFCI Outlets
- Electric start
- Decent weight (213.8 lbs)
- No 50-amp output
- No remote start
- Relatively low run time
- Low fuel efficiency
