Description
Zoom on the WEN DF1100X
The WEN DF1100X is the newer version of the DF1100T. It's a powerful portable generator mostly geared towards:
- Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures
- Professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working
In the forthcoming sections, you'll delve into its power characteristics, the various outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the additional features it boasts.
Power & Run Time
With its dual-fuel technology, the WEN DF1100X delivers 120/240V, and offers power and flexibility. Running on gasoline, it boasts a running wattage of 8,300W and a peak wattage of 11,000W. When powered by propane, it delivers 7,500 running watts and 9,500 peak watts.
Its starting mechanisms include a classic hand-operated recoil starting mechanism and a convenient and efficient electric starter (battery included).
Regarding its running time, the DF1100X, with a 6.6 gallons fuel capacity, can operate for around 8.5 hours at 50% load with a full tank of gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.78 GPH). When using propane, it can run for around 3 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.57 GPH).
As the DF1100X exhibits a THD of less than 15%, which is relatively high, it is best avoided for powering sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel features the upcoming 6 AC outlets:
Moreover, it boasts 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A (cigarette lighter style) receptacle enabling simple battery charging for added ease.
Even if this WEN generator isn't quite RV Ready, it still allows for an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor, thanks to its L5-30R receptacle. Besides, since it boasts a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the DF1100X is engineered to be transfer switch ready, ensuring easy integration with your breaker box to provide backup power to your home during outages.
Portability
At L27.3 x W20.6 x H21.9 in, the traditional open frame structure of the WEN DF1100X ensures stability while facilitating convenient maintenance access to components and promoting air cooling. This type of design is ideal for tough environments and heavy outdoor use.
Although this generator is technically considered 'portable' (in the sense that it can be moved), its 213.8 lbs make it incredibly difficult to manually lift and transport. Still, once it is on the ground, its wheel kit and its folding handle can easily solve the issue of low mobility and allow for easy relocation of the device.
Features
Included in the control panel of the DF1100X are a convenient meter, which displays voltage, frequency and lifetime hours, essential for monitoring its status and activity.
Benefiting from its built-in fuel gauge, the generator allows for easy and immediate gas level inspections.
From a security standpoint, the generator is furnished with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), ensuring peace of mind during operation.
The unit also benefits from WEN's CO Watchdog carbon monoxide detection. This system measures the accumulation of poisonous CO gas while the generator is running. If the level of CO gas gets too high, the CO Watchdog system will automatically shut down the generator.
Alongside the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) for quick setup, the WEN DF1100X is bundled with additional accessories: propane hose and oil. An official storage cover is also available, as a separate purchase.
The WEN DF1100X versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the WEN DF1100X compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 7500 and 8500 W).
- Weighing in at 213.8 lbs, the WEN DF1100X fits within the expected weight range for dual fuel devices producing 7500 to 8500 rated watts. If you are mindful of weight, the Pulsar PGL9000BCO is among the top contenders in this power range, with a dry weight of 149 pounds.
- As far as autonomy is concerned, providing around 8.5 hours of runtime with a full tank at a 50% load, the DF1100X falls into the low end in comparison with other dual fuel devices of a comparable power output. If you consider autonomy on a single full tank as one of the deciding factors, one of the generators in the same power range that offers the highest run time is the Firman H07553, with around 12 hours.
- Autonomy holds its importance, however, it is largely dependent on the generator’s fuel capacity and so, it is nonsensible to discuss it without mentioning fuel efficiency as well. In fact, this generator is not one of the most fuel-efficient options in the aforementioned wattage range: its estimated gasoline consumption at 50% load is around 0.78 GPH. If fuel consumption is your top priority, we suggest to check out the Cummins Onan P9500df, which has a fuel consumption of only 0.6 GPH and thus, is one of the most efficient devices in our database.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 7500-8500W dual fuel generators, the WEN DF1100X is on the cheap side of the price range.
It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.
The bottom line
- Inexpensive
- Dual Fuel
- CO Watchdog
- Several accessories included
- GFCI Outlets
- Electric start
- Decent weight (213.8 lbs)
- No 50-amp output
