Description
Zoom on the WEN DF1100X
The WEN DF1100X is the newer version of the DF1100T. It's a powerful portable generator especially useful for:
- Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures
- Professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working
The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, the extra features it benefits from, and any relevant emission compliance details.
Power & Run Time
The dual-fuel technology of the WEN DF1100X allows for an output of 120/240V and provides superb power and versatility. If gasoline-powered, the device provides a running wattage of 8,300W and a starting wattage of 11,000W. If propane-powered, it gives 7,500 rated watts and 9,500 starting watts.
This generator features a simple traditional pull-start mechanism, but also a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included).
With a fuel capacity of 6.6 gallons, the DF1100X can operate for around 8.5 hours at 50% load using gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.78 GPH), or for around 3 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.57 GPH) using propane.
The powering of sensitive electronic devices with the DF1100X is not recommended due to its relatively high THD (<15%).
Outlets
The control panel includes the following 6 AC outlets:
It also sports 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A (cigarette lighter style) receptacle with which you may charge your batteries with ease.
This WEN generator features an L5-30R receptacle, enabling an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. However, it is still not quite RV ready. Besides, due to the featured twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the DF1100X is transfer switch ready: you may connect it to a breaker box to power your household during a power outage.
Portability
With its dimensions of L27.3 x W20.6 x H21.9 in, the conventional, open frame design of the WEN DF1100X offers stability and allows the generator to be raised above ground level. This type of design is ideal for tough environments and heavy outdoor use.
Even though this device may be technically portable (as in movable), manipulation and transportation without special equipment can be a challenge, as it weighs 213.8 pounds. Nevertheless, thanks to its wheel kit and its folding handle (a decent solution to its lack of maneuverability), the generator can be easily moved, once placed the ground.
Features
The DF1100X's control center features a convenient meter, which displays voltage, frequency and lifetime hours to aid you with the monitoring of its status and activity.
The generator includes a built-in fuel gauge, a quick, easy and convenient method of checking the device’s gas level.
As far as security is concerned, the generator can be used with a peace of mind, as it features an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off.
The unit also benefits from WEN's CO Watchdog carbon monoxide detection. This system measures the accumulation of poisonous CO gas while the generator is running. If the level of CO gas gets too high, the CO Watchdog system will automatically shut down the generator. It’s a welcomed additional security feature, but don’t forget to always take your generator outside (opens in a new tab).
With the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), letting you start the generator quickly, the WEN DF1100X also comes with several accessories, including: propane hose and oil. An official storage cover is also available, as a separate purchase.
Emissions
The WEN DF1100X is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. It can therefore be sold and purchased in all 50 states, including California.
Moreover, it features a spark arrestor and therefore, can be used in forested areas.
The WEN DF1100X versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the WEN DF1100X compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 7500 and 8500 W).
- At a weight of 213.8 pounds, the WEN DF1100X places in the expected weight range of the dual fuel generators in the 7500-8500 rated wattage range. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the Cummins Onan P9500df, standing at just 194 lbs.
- As for its autonomy, the DF1100X, with an autonomy of around 8.5 hours at a 50% load, is placed on the low end among the generators of its kind. Concerning the run times, one of the several devices with a comparable output, offering the highest autonomy, is the Firman H07552, which is able to run for around 12 hours.
- The run time is important, but also hugely depends on the capacity of the fuel tank and doesn't mean much if we don't talk about fuel consumption as well. This generator is rather wasteful, compared to other devices within the aforementioned output range, when it comes to gasoline consumption, as it reaches roughly 0.78 GPH at a 50% load. If you wish to acquire one of the most gasoline efficient products of this power range, the Pulsar PG10000B16, with a fuel consumption of 0.55 GPH could be in your good books.
Price comparison
As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 7500-8500W dual fuel generators, the WEN DF1100X is on the cheap side of the price range.
It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.
The bottom line
- Inexpensive
- CO Watchdog
- Several accessories included
- GFCI Outlets
- Electric start
- Dual Fuel
- Decent weight (213.8 lbs)
- No 50-amp output
- No remote start
- Relatively low run time
- Low fuel efficiency
