Power & Run Time

The Sportsman GEN3500DFi in use

The Sportsman GEN3500DFi

With its dual-fuel technology, the powerful and versatile Sportsman GEN3500DFi provides an output of 120V. While gasoline-powered, it gives a running wattage of 3,000W along with a peak wattage of 3,500W. While propane-powered, it provides 2,700 rated watts and 3,150 starting watts. Moreover, since it is parallel capable (parallel kit not included), its power may be doubled if linked to a second compatible unit.

At a noise rating of 69 dBA (less noisy than a normal conversation), the inverter generator is started via a conventional pull-start mechanism.

With a fuel capacity of 3.2 gallons, the GEN3500DFi can operate for around 10 hours at 50% load using gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.32 GPH), or for around 12 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.39 GPH) using propane.

The GEN3500DFi produces a clean sine wave: thanks to a <5% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), your sensitive electronics can be safely plugged in the AC outlets.

Outlets

The control panel features the following 3 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R)
120V 30A (TT-30R) receptacle

Furthermore, it has 2 DC outlets: there's a 12V 8A receptacle allowing you to easily charge your batteries and a 5V USB port with which you may charge electronics, for example mobile phones or tablets, conveniently.

This Sportsman generator is RV Ready, thanks to its TT-30R receptacle (TT stands for 'Travel Trailer').

Portability

Since the Sportsman GEN3500DFi is an inverter generator, its closed design (L21.5 x W16.1 x H18.3 in) has an esthetical advantage over conventional, open frame devices. The generator has a contemporary design, convenient for recreationally generating power.

As the GEN3500DFi's weight is only 83 lbs, it can follow you and your power needs anywhere. In addition, its nifty double handle improves your grip, allowing for an easy transport of the GEN3500DFi from place to place.

Features

The GEN3500DFi's control panel

The device’s light indicators will display if the generator is on overload, the generator is ready and its oil levels are insufficient.

As far as security is concerned, the generator can be used with a peace of mind, as it features an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker).

While the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), helpful for starting the device promptly, come with the Sportsman GEN3500DFi, the following accessories are also included: propane hose, battery charging cables, tool kit and funnel.

Emissions

The Sportsman GEN3500DFi is EPA approved, but NOT CARB-compliant. Thus, it cannot be purchased or sold in California.

The Sportsman GEN3500DFi versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Sportsman GEN3500DFi compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 2500 and 3500 W).

  • Having a dry weight of 83 lbs, the Sportsman GEN3500DFi belongs in the expected weight range for inverter generators which produce 2500 to 3500 rated watts. If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the Pulsar PGD40iSCO, with a dry weight of just 46 pounds.
  • Among the generators of a comparable running wattage, this inverter generator with a lowest noise of 69 dBA can be judged as noisy. If you’d prefer a less noisy device, one of the most quiet devices, which share the same power range with this one, is the Honda EU3000iS, whose lowest noise levels reach just 50 dBA.
  • Thanks to an impressive running time of around 10 hours at 50% load, the GEN3500DFi benefits from a higher run time than many inverter generators of a similar output. If concerned with autonomy, one of the products of a comparable power output, which offers the highest run time, is the Ryobi RYi4022X, boasting with around 12 hours.
  • The run time is important, but also hugely depends on the capacity of the fuel tank and doesn't mean much if we don't talk about fuel consumption as well. Compared to its peers, this inverter generator is not exactly fuel efficient, compared to similarly powerful devices, with an estimated fuel consumption of 0.32 GPH at a 50% load. If you wish to acquire one of the most gasoline efficient products of this power range, the Pulsar PGD40iSCO, with a fuel consumption of 0.22 GPH could be in your good books.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 2500-3500W dual fuel inverter generators, the Sportsman GEN3500DFi is on the cheap side of the price range.

It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.
