Power & Run Time
The Ryobi RYi4022X's design includes a gasoline-fueled 212 cc Ryobi OHV 4-stroke engine. With a 120V output, it gives a running wattage of 3,400W and also a peak wattage of 4,000W.
Operating at a noise rating of 72 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a vacuum cleaner), this inverter generator starts up with Ryobi's EasyStart pull-start mechanism (more information below).
Equipped with a 3.3 gallons fuel tank, the RYi4022X ensures continuous operation for around 12 hours at 50% load with a full tank (fuel usage approximately 0.27 gallons per hour).
Sensitive electronics can be safely plugged in the AC outlets, as the RYi4022X produces a clean sine wave, with a <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD).
Outlets
The control panel features 5 AC outlets as follows:
Equipped with a TT-30R receptacle (TT representing 'Travel Trailer'), this Ryobi generator is RV Ready, ensuring compatibility with recreational vehicles.
Portability
Measuring L25 x W15.88 x H21.75 in, the classic open frame build of the Ryobi RYi4022X delivers stability and easy maintenance access to components, facilitating air circulation. The device has been designed for tough environments and demanding outdoor use.
With a dry weight of 85 lbs, the RYi4022X can easily follow you wherever your power needs are. Moreover, once it’s on the ground, its wheel kit and its folding handle will allow you to shift it without effort.
EasyStart Mechanism
The unit benefits from Ryobi’s EasyStart mechanism. This 3-step starting system allows you to easily start your generator. It works in the following way:
- Put the engine switch on the “ON” position, and place the lever on the “START” position
- Pull the recoil until the engine runs
- Let the engine run 15 to 30 seconds and place the lever on the “RUN” position
Features
A light indicator serves to show you when the oil level is too low.
Security-wise, this product benefits from an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), which gives you a complete peace of mind when using it.
It also benefits from Ryobi's CO DETECT technology, which is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.
Alongside the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) for quick setup, the Ryobi RYi4022X is bundled with additional accessories: oil and tool kit.

The Ryobi RYi4022X versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Ryobi RYi4022X compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 2500 and 3500 W).
- With a dry weight of 85 lbs, the Ryobi RYi4022X sits comfortably within the expected weight range for inverters generating 2500 to 3500 rated watts. Regarding dry weight, one of the champions in the same power range is the Pulsar PGD40iSCO, with a dry weight of only 46 lbs.
- When stacked up against other devices of similar running wattage, this inverter generator's lowest possible noise rating of 72 dBA places it in the louder category. If noise level is one your key decisive factors, you may find the Honda EU3000iS appealing. It's rated at 50 dBA, making it one of the quietest generators in its power range.
- As the RYi4022X features an autonomy of around 12 hours at 50% load, it has a higher run time than an average generator of its type and power range. Concerning the run times, one of the several devices with a comparable output, offering the highest autonomy, is the Generac iQ3600DF, which is able to run for around 13 hours.
- While run time matters, it's heavily influenced by the fuel tank's capacity. Hence, it's important to consider fuel efficiency alongside. This inverter generator reaches an estimated fuel consumption of 0.27 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 50% load, making it average, for the previously mentioned wattage range. If not satisfied with the afore-mentioned fuel consumption, you may wish to check out the Pulsar PGD40iSCO. With a fuel consumption of as little as 0.22 GPH, it is one of the most efficient generators currently on the market.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 2500-3500W inverter generators, the Ryobi RYi4022X is on the average side of the price range.

Love generator
To all the customers who experience the run for 2 seconds even new out of box.. I found the only way it will run is with the gas cap barely on basically I just sit it on top and has worked every time since this. And my main source of power has been this generator for over 6-9 months now
Bought this generator due to outage in my RV park. It seems decent so far.
Should have a gas cap fuel gauge. Hook to your house by moving loads in your panel to one phase or the other. Or buy a step up transformer 120 to 120/240v. I’ve read that igens have a hard time with 120/240v unbalanced loading. My igen volts goes from 121v to 127 v during the in rush from my grinder; I like!
So far it starts and runs well. I have not needed to depend on it. But have run appliances and my sump pump (main priority) on it and everything starts and runs fine. For the money it seems like a pretty good deal from a major brand.
Some people are commenting that they are having trouble starting their generator. Setting the auto-idle switch to off seems to make starting easier. Although there is no mention of this in the instruction manual. Just my experience. I won’t say it starts on the first pull every time, but acceptable to me.
Good product, bought one for hurricane season. Instructions are good. Generator is a very simple user friendly machine. First load was around 900w (8-9amps), fridge, 5.5 chest freezer, LED TV, couple fans. With only one gallon of fuel went 5.25 hrs. So might be we can pass the 12 hrs mark at 50% load. Making arrangements to hook it to the house using the 30 amp plug.
Unplug the CO detector. Reading lots of reviews here on that and most likely that’s your issue. Either then get a replacement part or leave it unplugged. Just reach up under and unplug. Hope this helps someone!
Great generator for price
Purchased 1/12/2021. Assembled, put oil & gas in it, started on first pull. It’s quite a bit louder than fully enclosed style, but I was willing to make the trade off for the money. Once you get around 20’ away (especially on other side of shrubs or landscaping) it’s really not that bad — quieter than my lawnmower. I purchased to keep 2 refrigerators & 2 freezers running during power outage. I’ve only used it for about 30 minutes but it works well so far
Same common issue new out of box from home depot after I assembled it added oil and gallon of gas it started right up and ran great for couple hours then I added more gas after that wont stay running more then 2 seconds
After Laura hurricane, buy at Home Depot on Sept ,03 /2020 .Out the box assembly and fill a oil and gas about 1gallon! Following 3 step and first pull it’s run for over 3 hours with 1 freeze and refrigerator plus one big fan Wish RYOBI put a EXTRA FUEL VALVE in case not want to run empty whole gas tank ,because I don’t want to leave extra gas in gas tank may cause problems for next time .
Zero issues. Started on first pull and runs a rv. I really like it so far.
Same thing. Won’t start right out of the box. Kept thinking I was doing something wrong but thats not it. Runs for 2 seconds and dies. WTF? Has anyone figured out why this is happening?
I bought one of these at Home Depot in early spring 2020. Assembled and filled with oil, did not test it. August 10th we had a Derecho or inland Hurricane in Iowa and power went out for a couple days for me (I was lucky). Anyway, I poured gas in the generator and it started on first pull, probably used it 20 hours or so(?), it powered an old side by side refrigerator, and 2 chest freezers, a light and charged our cell phones and mostly ran on low speed. I love it, wish I could figure out how to run two of them to get 240v to run the whole house. I highly recommend this item.
I have the same problem – my RYOBI is new out of the box (August 2020), full of gasoline and oil, pull the cord – runs for 1 second, then it dies. Can’t see what the problem is. Purchased from Home Depot, but they seem to want me to return the generator for an exchange – but that is nuts, it is full of gasoline and oil now and will leak all over the place if I try to transport it. Think I will call my golf cart guy, he may be familiar with small gasoline motors. Please let me know if you find out there is some secret switch that needs to be turned on to keep it running.
I have always like Ryobi, but this may be a deal breaker to stop me from purchasing more Ryobi items
Brand new out of the box and it won’t start. Pull the cord and it runs for a total of one second. It’s got oil… It’s got gas. It won’t run.
Rated as P. O. S. Do not buy this generator
My experience has been poor so far. Setup was relatively easy but when I added fuel, I quickly discovered a pinhole in the fuel line as a puddle of gasoline began forming under the generator. The hole was located between the fuel filter and shutoff valve so the only way to stop it was to clamp the hose. So far, I cannot operate the generator and I have yet to determine how to resolve the problem. No relief for this power outage. Bad marks for Ryobi.
