Description
Zoom on the Ryobi RYi2322
In a few words, the Ryobi RYi2322 is a quiet, compact and lightweight portable inverter generator perfectly suited for:
- Camping and tailgating hobbyists looking for a portable power source
- Amateur DIY lovers
The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the extra features it benefits from.
Power & Run Time
The Ryobi RYi2322's core is the 80 cc OHV 4-stroke engine, which runs on gasoline. With an output of 120V, it provides a running wattage of 1,800W and a peak wattage of 2,300W. Moreover, the parallel capability (Ryobi parallel kit (opens in a new tab) not included) enables doubling of power output when paired with another similar or compatible unit, providing increased energy capacity and versatility for a wide range of needs.
With a noise rating of 57 dBA (less noisy than a conversation at home), the inverter generator's ignition is facilitated by Ryobi's EasyStart pull-start mechanism (more information below).
The RYi2322 boasts a fuel tank capable of holding 1.2 gallon, allowing it to run continuously for up to 10.3 hours (with fuel usage averaging around 0.12 gallons per hour).
Sensitive electronics can be safely plugged in the AC outlets, as the RYi2322 produces a clean sine wave, with a <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD).
Outlets
The control panel features the upcoming 2 AC outlets:
Furthermore, it has 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports providing convenient charging capabilities for mobile phones, tablets, and other electronic devices.
Portability
The Ryobi RYi2322 is distinguished by its enclosed inverter generator design (L22 x W12.5 x H19 in), providing improved aesthetics and quieter performance compared to traditional, open frame units. The design follows the contemporary trends and is perfect for recreationally generating power.
With a dry weight of 51.9 lbs, the RYi2322 is manageable, ensuring it can accompany you wherever you need power. Additionally, it can be easily moved with the help of its set of 2 wheels and its telecospic handle, once it is on the ground.
EasyStart Mechanism
The unit benefits from Ryobi’s EasyStart mechanism. This 3-step starting system allows you to easily start your generator. It works in the following way:
- Place the dial on the “COLD START” position
- Pull the recoil until the engine runs
- Let the engine run 15 to 30 seconds and place the dial on the “RUN/RE-START” position
Features
The RYi2322's control panel is equipped with a digital data center, furnishing detailed information on the fuel level, power output and remaining run time for you to easily track its activity and status.
As for its security measures, the device features an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, letting you use it with a peace of mind.
It also benefits from Ryobi's CO DETECT technology, which is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.
Apart from the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), which lets you start it right away, the Ryobi RYi2322 also is packed along with the following accessories: oil, funnel and tool kit.
GenControl
Ryobi’s GenControl technology lets you control your generator from your smartphone. It allows you to always know exactly what is going on and to make adjustments when needed, so that everything keeps running without unexpected power loss.
Using Bluetooth technology, the generator communicates with the GenControl app (available on iOS (opens in a new tab) and Android (opens in a new tab) devices) to conveniently monitor power consumption, fuel level, remaining runtime, and even remotely shut off your generator directly from your smartphone.
The information displayed within the GenControl App is identical to the information displayed on the LCD screen of the RYi2322. Moreover, the GenControl app also supports parallel operation.

The Ryobi RYi2322 versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Ryobi RYi2322 compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 1500 and 2500 W).
- As its weight is 51.9 pounds, the Ryobi RYi2322 falls in the expected weight range of the inverters in the 1500-2500 rated wattage category. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the Genmax GM2000i, standing at just 34.2 lbs.
- At 57 dBA, this inverter generator's noise rating is in line with the expected average for devices within its type and power category. If you’d prefer a less noisy device, one of the most quiet devices, which share the same power range with this one, is the Honda EU2200i, whose lowest noise levels reach just 48 dBA.
- The RYi2322's runtime of up to 10.3 hours at a 25% load on a full tank positions it within the average autonomy range compared to other inverter generators with similar power. For those prioritizing autonomy, the DuroMax XP2300iH could be considered, as it offers one of the longest run times among generators with similar power output, reaching up to 13 hours.
- Autonomy holds its importance, however, it is largely dependent on the generator’s fuel capacity and so, it is nonsensible to discuss it without mentioning fuel efficiency as well. With a fuel usage of about 0.12 GPH at a 25% load, this inverter generator falls within the typical gasoline consumption range observed in comparably powerful products. If minimizing fuel usage is one of your key priorities, the Westinghouse iGen2800c is one of the most efficient devices with similar power output, with a gasoline consumption of only 0.08 gallons per hour.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 1500-2500W inverter generators, the Ryobi RYi2322 is on the average side of the price range.
Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

User Reviews
I picked this generator up from The Home Depot on sale as used. I paid 146+ tax in Bakersfield California. I was totally unsure about this purchase honestly. I figured i could fix it. Checking the oil, it looked and smelled new. Properly filled, I closed the side access panel filled with fuel and pulled the handle after switching to start position. It fired right up. Downloading the app, and I was amazed at 4.4 total hours on it. I quickly learned why it was returned. This was my very first inverter generator ever. My brother took it to the beach that weekend and hated it. It would not run a 5k btu ac unit or run a microwave… Learning it’s limitations was surprising to me as inductive loads gave it a very hard time often pushing it into protect. During protection mode. All outlets turn off and it just goes to idle. Resistive loads are great for this thing. Lights, heaters, chargers and other resistive will hold 1800 Watts no problem or 2000 Watts for about 1 minute. From the factory the choke was not set properly. It was half choke if anything. So check it fully engages when you clean the carburetor. The power did go down for a few days a few years. It started right up after filling with fuel as usual. Using a 25 ft cord. It overloaded with 1 refrigerator and 1 freezer until I turned off auto-idle. These two units combined only pull 7kwh per 24 hours combined. Now this unit will charge 48v batteries if needed. It can take 10 hours to drain the fuel tank through the carburetor bowl drain screw. The internal battery dies and resets the total run hours. This unit only has 40 hours total.
I have this generator & have put 5200 hrs on it in the last year & the only issue I’ve had is the carburetor seems to have an issue when under a load & stalls but I adjusted the choke to close it halfway & it seemed to fix the issue. It now burns oil like crazy, with each tank of gas (I get about 13.5 hrs outta a full tank) I have to add oil as well. It’s still under warranty so hopefully they fix the issue but from what I’ve read 3,000 hrs is considered high hours on a generator.
The Ryobi generator are cheap, start easy, and use little gas. However the Square or modified sign wave causes some equipment such as microwaves to over heat. others electronics will malfunction in other ways. The noise level is acceptable. The units seem to just run.I had to replace on carb that was trouble from day one.
