Description

When you have big power needs, you need a powerful generator and the PG10000 provides just that. Instead of the expense of a stationary home standby unit, the PG10000 is one of the most powerful in its class and capable of operating up to five major appliances at one time. The 15 HP OHV gasoline engine can operate for up to 12 hours on a single 8 gallon tank of gasoline and do so by providing not only 12V, 120V and 240 volt power, but special 30 and 50 AMP circuits for total control of RV units. Add keyless electric start, maintenance free battery, dual handle mobility with no-flat tires and you have power and convenience whenever and wherever you want it. Zoom on the Pulsar PG10000

In a nutshell, the Pulsar PG10000 is a portable generator mostly geared towards:

  • Food truck owners who do not wish to see their business interrupted under any circumstances
  • Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures
  • RV travellers looking for even more independence

In the following paragraphs, we shall explore the power characteristics, available outlets, portability, and any additional features of the device, along with its emission compliance information.

Power & Run Time

The Pulsar PG10000's core is the 420 cc (15 hp) Ducar OHV 4-stroke engine, which runs on gasoline. With an output of 120/240V, it provides a running wattage of 8000W and a peak wattage of 10000W.

With a noise rating of 77 dBA (less noisy than a shower), the generator features a conventional pull-start mechanism, but also a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included).

With a full tank, the PG10000 can operate for around 12 hours at 50% load (fuel consumption around 0.67 GPH), thanks to its fuel capacity of 8 gallons.

Outlets

The control panel features the upcoming 7 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R)
120V 30A (TT-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

Furthermore, it has 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A output with which you may charge your batteries with ease.

Thanks to its TT-30R receptacle (TT stands for 'Travel Trailer'), this Pulsar generator is RV Ready. In addition, because the PG10000 is equipped with a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: it can power your home during a power outage, as it can be easily connected to your breaker box to power your household.

Portability

The dimensions of the Pulsar PG10000, which are L28.5 x W21.8 x H22.2 in, and its typical, open frame design provides stability and enables the generator to be raised above ground level. The featured design is ideal for the outdoors and all tough environments.

As the generator's weight is 204 pounds, manually moving it or transporting it may be challenging, despite the fact that it is technically considered 'portable' (movable). Nevertheless, it can still be moved quite conveniently with the help of its wheel kit and its folding handle, once it is placed on the ground.

The PG10000's control panel

To help you monitor the PG10000's status and activity, its control panel is equipped with a convenient meter, which displays voltage, frequency and lifetime hours.

In addition to this info, when the oil level is too low, you will be informed by the featured light indicator.

The generator allows for a quick, easy and convenient assessment of its gas level, as it is equipped with a built-in fuel gauge.

As for its security measures, the device features an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, letting you use it with a peace of mind.

Besides the usual set of documentation and owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to get you promptly started, Pulsar also included a battery charger in the PG10000's packaging.

Emissions

The Pulsar PG10000 is EPA approved, but NOT CARB-compliant. Thus, it cannot be purchased or sold in California.

The Pulsar PG10000 versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Pulsar PG10000 compare to generators of similar power (between 7500 and 8500 W).

  • As far as its dry weight is concerned, the Pulsar PG10000 weighs just 204 pounds and thus, it is one of the lighter 7500 to 8500 rated wattage generators. If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the Dewalt DXGNR8000, with a dry weight of just 183 pounds.
  • This generator, with its lowest possible noise rated at 77 dBA falls into the more noisy category, compared to other devise of a similar running wattage. For those who are looking for a less noisy device, we suggest the Predator 9500. With just 67 dBA, it is one of the most quiet devices in this power range.
  • Since the PG10000 boasts with a run time of around 12 hours at 50% load, it can be safely judged as a device of a higher run time than most generators of a comparable output. Furthermore, considering the run times, one of the generators which have a roughly same power output, with the highest autonomy, is the Champion 100416, as it provides around 12.5 hours.
  • While the run time is an important parameter, it is dependent on the fuel tank’s capacity and thus, doesn’t say much on its own unless we consider fuel consumption as well. This generator, with an estimated fuel consumption of just 0.67 GPH (gallon per hour) at 50% load, is one of the more fuel efficient generators, for the previously mentioned wattage range. If fuel consumption is your top priority, we suggest to check out the Westinghouse WPro8500, which has a fuel consumption of only 0.55 GPH and thus, is one of the most efficient devices in our database.

The bottom line

STRENGTHS:
  • RV Ready
  • Electric start
  • Lightweight for its kind (204 lbs)
  • High run time
  • Fuel efficient
WEAKNESSES:
  • No remote start
  • Not CARB-compliant
  • No spark arrestor
  • On the noisy side (77 dBA)
