Zoom on the Predator 6500
In a nutshell, the Predator 6500 is a portable generator mostly geared towards:
- RV travellers who wish to upgrade their experience to another level
- People occasionally participating in sporting competitions, open-air performances and outdoor festivals
- Food van owners who know that just a short power outage could lose them hundreds of dollars
- Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
- Professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment
In the upcoming sections, you'll discover its power characteristics, the array of outlets it presents, its overall portability, and the additional features it possesses.
Power & Run Time
The Predator 6500's design includes a gasoline-fueled 301 cc (8 hp) OHV 4-stroke engine. With a 120/240V output, it gives a running wattage of 5,500W and also a peak wattage of 6,500W.
With a noise rating of 73.5 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a dishwasher), the generator's ignition is facilitated by a classic hand-operated recoil starting mechanism.
Thanks to a fuel capacity of 8 gallons, the 6500 can operate for around 14.5 hours at 50% load with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.55 GPH).
Outlets
The control panel features the following 5 AC outlets:
Furthermore, it showcases 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 10A (cigarette lighter style) receptacle offering a convenient battery charging option.
Because the 6500 is equipped with a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: it can power your home during a power outage, as it can be easily connected to your breaker box to power your household.
Portability
At L26.9 x W22 x H22.8 in, the traditional open frame structure of the Predator 6500 ensures stability while facilitating convenient maintenance access to components and promoting air cooling. The generator is designed for ideal use outdoors and in rough environments.
Although this generator is technically considered 'portable' (in the sense that it can be moved), its 165 lbs make it incredibly difficult to manually lift and transport. Nevertheless, thanks to a wheel kit (separate purchase from Harbor Freight or Amazon), the generator can be easily moved, once placed on the ground.
Features
The device's light indicator will illuminate to indicate if its oil levels are insufficient.
Thanks to its built-in fuel gauge, the generator allows you to quickly, conveniently, and easily check the gas level at a glance.
From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), giving you a peace of mind during use.
The unit also benefits from the Predator's CO SECURE™ carbon monoxide detection. This system monitors the accumulation of CO gas while the generator is running and will shut off the engine if the levels become dangerously high.
Alongside the typical set of documentation and owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to assist with setup, Predator has included a tool kit in the packaging of the 6500. A storage cover is also available, as a separate purchase.

The Predator 6500 versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Predator 6500 compare to generators of similar power (between 5000 and 6000 W).
- Since the generator weighs in at a dry weight of 165 lbs, the Predator 6500 belongs in the expected weight range for devices which can produce between 5000 and 6000 rated watts. If weight is a key factor for your needs, the Pulsar PGX60BiSRCO is noteworthy for being one of the top contenders in this power range, with a dry weight of 93.5 pounds.
- Since the generator's noise is rated at 73.5 dBA, it has the roughly average expected noise for a device of similar power. If you value reduced noise levels, the Honda EU7000iS could be worth considering. It's one of the quietest generators in its power range, rated at 52 dBA.
- At 50% load, the 6500 achieves one of the longest run times compared to devices of similar power, sustaining operations for around 14.5 hours.
- Run time is a key metric, but it's dependent on the generator's fuel capacity. Therefore, discussing fuel efficiency is necessary to get the full picture. With a fuel usage of about 0.55 GPH at a 50% load, this generator falls within the typical gasoline consumption range observed in comparably powerful products. If you wish to further improve in the area of fuel efficiency, the DuroMax XP7000iH, which boasts with a gas consumption of only 0.38 GPH, may be the right generator for you.
Here's a list of the most popular specific comparisons:
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 5000-6000W generators, the Predator 6500 is on the cheap side of the price range.
It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.
The bottom line
