Description

Zoom on the Predator 5000

In a few words, the Predator 5000 is a compact portable inverter generator perfectly suited for:

  • RV travellers looking for even more independence
  • Occasional participants of outdoor events, competitions, concerts and festivals
  • Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
  • Tailgating and campground aficionados with the desire of enjoying power anywhere they go

The subsequent sections will explore in detail its power characteristics, the diverse outlets it provides, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it offers.

Power & Run Time

The Predator 5000 in use

The Predator 5000

With its dual-fuel technology, the powerful and versatile Predator 5000 provides an output of 120V. While gasoline-powered, it gives a running wattage of 3,900W along with a peak wattage of 5,000W. While propane-powered, it provides 3,600 rated watts and 5,000 starting watts. Moreover, the parallel capability (parallel kit not included) enables power output to increase when paired with another similar or compatible unit, providing increased energy capacity and versatility for a wide range of needs.

The inverter generator is rated for a noise of 60.5 dBA (just slightly more noisy than background music). Its starting mechanisms include a classic hand-operated recoil starting mechanism and a practical and straightforward electric starter (battery included). In addition, the 5000 also supports remote starting, enhancing user convenience (key fob included).

As for its running time, the 5000, along with its 3.7 gallons fuel capacity, can run for up to 18.2 hours with a full tank filled with gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.2 GPH). If propane is used, it can operate for up to 14.6 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.32 GPH).

The 5000 generates a clean sine wave with <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), ensuring minimal electrical noise and fluctuations. This feature makes it ideal for powering sensitive electronics, providing stable and reliable AC power through the outlets.

Outlets

The control panel features 3 AC outlets as follows:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R)
120V 30A (TT-30R) receptacle

Moreover, it presents 3 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports (1 x USB-A and 1 x USB-C) ensuring convenient charging of devices like mobile phones and tablets, for connectivity on the go and a 12V 8A receptacle making battery charging a breeze.

With its TT-30R receptacle (TT standing for 'Travel Trailer'), this Predator generator is RV Ready, perfectly suited for powering recreational vehicles.

Portability

With an inverter generator design, the Predator 5000 features a closed construction (L25 x W18 x H20.8 in), enhancing aesthetics and ensuring reduced noise levels, offering a distinct advantage over standard, open frame generators. This modern design aims to provide an ideal power solution to recreational users.

Since the generator weighs 110 lbs, it will be incredibly difficult to manually lift it and transport it, even though it is technically considered to 'be portable' (in the sense that it is movable). However, its challenging mobility is solved by its set of 4 wheels (⌀5.5") and its telecospic handle, which will ease its displacement, once it is on the floor.

Features

Panel of the Predator 5000

The 5000's control panel

A digital data center, one of the features of the 5000's control panel, gives you information on the lifetime run hours, power output and voltage, and thus, is helpful for the monitoring of its activity and status.

In addition to this info, the generator's light indicators provide visual feedback when the generator is on overload, the generator is ready and its oil levels are insufficient.

With its built-in fuel gauge, the inverter generator provides quick and convenient gas level checks.

In terms of security, the generator features an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, ensuring peace of mind during its use.

The unit also benefits from the Predator's CO SECURE™ carbon monoxide detection. This system monitors the accumulation of CO gas while the generator is running and will shut off the engine if the levels become dangerously high.

Apart from the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to facilitate setup, the Predator 5000 features extra accessories: battery charging cables, funnel, propane hose, 3 altitude kits, tool kit and key fob.

The Predator 5000 versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Predator 5000 compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 3500 and 4500 W).

  • At 110 lbs dry, the Predator 5000 is consistent with the standard weight profile for inverters ranging from 3500 to 4500 rated watts. If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the Genmax GM4600iAEFIC, with a dry weight of just 58.4 pounds.
  • The inverter generator can be considered average in its noise for its type and power category, as it is rated at 60.5 dBA. For those who are looking for a less noisy device, we suggest the Westinghouse iGen5000DF. With just 52 dBA, it is one of the most quiet devices in this power range.
  • With up to 18.2 hours of runtime at a 25% load on a full tank, the 5000 is in line with the average autonomy range for inverter generators of comparable power. If run time is one of your main concerns, the Firman W03661OF could be worth looking at. It boasts one of the highest run times among units of comparable power, lasting up to 25 hours.
  • While the run time is an important parameter, it is dependent on the fuel tank's capacity and thus, doesn't say much on its own unless we consider fuel consumption as well. As this inverter generator uses an estimated 0.2 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 25% load, it finds itself in the average gasoline consumption range of similar products. If not satisfied with the afore-mentioned fuel consumption, you may wish to check out the Champion 201319. With a fuel consumption of as little as 0.16 GPH, it is one of the most efficient generators currently on the market.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 3500-4500W dual fuel inverter generators, the Predator 5000 is on the expensive side of the price range.

While certainly not the cheapest of its kind, purchasing it would most likely also mean enjoying the reliability of a high-end product.

The dual fuel predator 5000 how much oil does it hold to fill it up properly (Asked September 02, 2023)

Engine oil capacity is 0.64 qt.

What type of engine oil does the predator generator use (Asked September 26, 2023)

For general, all-temperature use, SAE 10W-30 is recommended.

Does the 5000 come with a remote control shut off device (Asked September 28, 2023)

The unit comes with a key fob that can start or stop the generator from up to approximately 100 feet.

Does it come with a battery (Asked November 26, 2023)

The unit comes with a battery.

When ran parallel with identical inverter why is the parallel kit rated for 120V at 50A. I need 240V (Asked December 18, 2023)

Paralleling units does not increase voltage. The Predator 5000 only provides 120V. To increase voltage, units would have to be put in series. There are currently no kits to do that.

Using with solar on off grid cabin. Can it be connected to transfer switch to start automatically when batteries run low? (Asked February 16, 2024)

The unit is not compatible with automatic transfer switches. It will have to be manually started.
