Description

Zoom on the Predator 4400

In a nutshell, the Predator 4400 is a portable inverter generator mostly geared towards:

  • RV travellers looking for even more independence
  • Occasional participants of outdoor events, competitions, concerts and festivals
  • Handcrafting enthusiasts who wish to work on-the-go
  • Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials
  • Camping and tailgating hobbyists looking for a portable power source
  • Professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure

The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, the extra features it benefits from, and any relevant emission compliance details.

Power & Run Time

The Predator 4400 in use

The Predator 4400

The Predator 4400's engine, 223 cc (6.5 hp) OHV 4-stroke, fueled by gasoline, can deliver 120V. It provides a running wattage of 3500W and reaches a peak wattage of 4400W. Moreover, since it is parallel capable (parallel kit not included), its power may be increased if linked to a second compatible unit.

The inverter generator features a conventional pull-start mechanism. It is rated for a noise of 67 dBA (less noisy than background music).

The 4400 can operate for up to 16 hours with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.2 GPH), due to its fuel capacity of 3.2 gallons.

The 4400 generates a clean sine wave: providing <3% Total Harmonic Disruption (THD), delicate electronics can be plugged in its AC outlets safely.

Outlets

The control panel features the following 5 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle

Furthermore, it has 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports (USB-A) with which you may charge electronics, for example mobile phones or tablets, conveniently.

While this Predator generator is not RV Ready, its L5-30R receptacle can be used for a simple RV connection with an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor (included).

Portability

The design of the Predator 4400 is a typical, open frame, offering support and stability and enabling the possibility of raising it above ground level. The generator is designed for ideal use outdoors and in rough environments.

As the 4400's weight is only 77 lbs, it can follow you and your power needs anywhere. Additionally, the generator’s mobility is also improved by its open frame design, as it can be easily grabbed and shifted.

If you wish to transport this unit more easily, you may also consider purchasing the official wheel kit (opens in a new tab).

Features

Panel of the Predator 4400

The 4400's control panel

The light indicators show you if the generator is on overload, the oil level is too low and the generator is ready.

The inverter generator allows for a quick, easy and convenient assessment of its gas level, as it is equipped with a built-in fuel gauge.

As far as security is concerned, the generator can be used with a peace of mind, as it features an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker).

The unit also benefits from the Predator's CO SECURE™ carbon monoxide detection. This system monitors the accumulation of CO gas while the generator is running and will shut off the engine if the levels become dangerously high. It’s a welcomed additional security feature, but don’t forget to always take your generator outside (opens in a new tab).

Apart from the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), which lets you start it right away, the Predator 4400 also is packed along with the following accessories: tool kit, RV adapter and funnel.

Emissions

The Predator 4400 is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. It can therefore be sold and purchased in all 50 states, including California.

Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, so it is adequate for use in forested areas.

The Predator 4400 versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Predator 4400 compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 3000 and 4000 W).

  • As far as its dry weight is concerned, the Predator 4400 weighs just 77 pounds and thus, it is one of the lighter 3000 to 4000 rated wattage inverter generators. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the Genmax GM3300i, standing at just 47.4 lbs.
  • If compared to generators capable of producing a similar running wattage, this inverter generator with a lowest emitted noise of 67 dBA can be considered somewhat noisy. If you are concerned with noise, check out the Cat INV4000E, which is one of the least noisy generators in its power range, with a noise rating of just 51 dBA.
  • Offering up to 16 hours of running time on a full tank at 25% load, the 4400 is within the average autonomy range of similarly powerful inverter generators. Furthermore, considering the run times, one of the generators which have a roughly same power output, with the highest autonomy, is the Firman W03661OF, as it provides up to 25 hours.
  • While the run time is an important parameter, it is dependent on the fuel tank’s capacity and thus, doesn’t say much on its own unless we consider fuel consumption as well. As this inverter generator uses an estimated 0.2 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 25% load, it finds itself in the average gasoline consumption range of similar products. If you wish to further improve in the area of fuel efficiency, the Energizer eZV3500P, which boasts with a gas consumption of only 0.13 GPH, may be the right generator for you.
According to our stats, the following comparison is pretty popular: Predator 4400 vs Predator 3500.

I use my 4400 Predator exclusively for my car wash business. Runs my water pressure gun, air compressor my vac, and polisher with no problem at all. Only shut down for a gas refill. I love this generator for work purposes.

    • Everything

    • It doesn't come with the wheels

Will only run AC in 2011 elkridge RV fifth wheel very few other items can’t even use the converter in the RV when the microwave is running or vice versa can’t use the refrigerator if the converter is running it’s got to be on propane so to me this generator inverter is a piece of garbage I don’t know how harbor freight and even sell it especially when the motor quits working in less than 3 months it Has no compression and will not start to me this generator inverter is a piece of junk motor sucks

    + PROS:
    • None
    - CONS:
    • Had in less than 3 months won't run RV will only run AC by itself nothing else motor lost all compression in less than 3 months won't even start

This has been a great little generator. It has powered my grand design reflection with no problem and that includes the a/c.

    + PROS:
    • Super quiet. Ran non stop for 3 days turned off only to fill up fuel. Powered everything in my camper including 15000 BTU a/c. I will say though, if you forget to flip the throttle switch it will not run the a/c.
    - CONS:
    • None yet. I’ve had it for 3 months now.

Like many others have found, it will NOT power a 13,500 BTU a/c even though it is advertised to do so. Bought for exclusive RV use. Have bigger unit for home use so this Predator is basically useless. H/F 20% restock fees suck even when products don’t do the job that they are advertised to do.

    + PROS:
    • Easy start. Engine strong.
    - CONS:
    • As stated in review.

    + PROS:
    • Rv plugs
    - CONS:
    • Wouldn’t power ac unit
    • Microwave low power
