Description

Zoom on the Predator 1400

In short, the Predator 1400 is a compact and lightweight portable inverter generator adequately designed for:

  • Tailgating and campground aficionados with the desire of enjoying power anywhere they go
  • Amateur DIY lovers

In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed.

Power & Run Time

The Predator 1400 in use

The Predator 1400

The Predator 1400 houses a 54 cc OHV 4-stroke engine, which provides 120V, consumes gasoline and delivers a running wattage of 1,100W along with a peak wattage of 1,400W. Moreover, since it is parallel capable (parallel kit not included), its power may be doubled if linked to a second compatible unit.

The inverter generator features a conventional pull-start mechanism. It is rated for a noise of 60.4 dBA (just slightly more noisy than background music).

The 1400 can operate for up to 7.3 hours with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.1 GPH), due to its fuel capacity of 0.74 gallon.

The 1400 generates a clean sine wave with <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), ensuring minimal electrical noise and fluctuations. This feature makes it ideal for powering sensitive electronics, providing stable and reliable AC power through the outlets.

Outlets

The control panel is equipped with the following 2 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R)

Furthermore, it has 3 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports ensuring convenient charging of devices like mobile phones and tablets, for connectivity on the go and a 12V 5A receptacle making battery charging a breeze.

Portability

As the Predator 1400 is an inverter generator, its encased design (L18.5 x W10.7 x H15.5 in) offers more aesthetics than a conventional, open frame product. The featured design follows the latest trends and is ideal for easy and recreational use.

With its weight totaling only 33 lbs, the 1400 stands out as a lightweight generator. As it can be moved by a single person without much effort, the generator and its power can be enjoyed on-the-go. In addition, a handle (molded in the case) lets you carry it easily and further increases its convenience.

Features

The 1400's control panel

The generator's light indicators provide visual feedback when the oil level is too low, the generator is ready and the generator is overloaded.

As far as security is concerned, the generator comes with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), providing peace of mind during use.

The unit also benefits from the Predator's CO SECURE™ carbon monoxide detection. This system monitors the accumulation of CO gas while the generator is running and will shut off the engine if the levels become dangerously high.

Beyond the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to assist with setup, the Predator 1400 ships with supplementary accessories: oil, funnel, battery charging cables and tool kit.

The Predator 1400 versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Predator 1400 compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 1000 and 2000 W).

  • In terms of its weight, the Predator 1400 weighs merely 33 pounds, earning it a spot among the lighter inverter generators within the 1000 to 2000 rated wattage category. If weight is your top priority, one of the champions in this power category is the Pulsar PGD16iSCO, weighing just 24 pounds.
  • When stacked up against other devices of similar running wattage, this inverter generator's lowest possible noise rating of 60.4 dBA places it in the louder category. If noise emissions are one of your priorities, you may be interested in the Honda EU2200i, one of the least noisy generators similarly powerful as this one, rated for 48 dBA.
  • The 1400's autonomy is somewhat low end compared to devices of its type and power range, as it reaches only up to 7.3 hours at 25% load on a full tank. Furthermore, considering the run times, one of the generators which have a roughly same power output, with the highest autonomy, is the DuroMax XP2300iH, as it provides up to 13 hours.
  • Run time is a key metric, but it's dependent on the generator's fuel tank capacity. Therefore, discussing fuel efficiency is necessary for a complete understanding. The inverter generator utilizes approximately 0.1 GPH of gasoline at a 25% load, placing it within the typical range of fuel consumption seen in products of comparable wattage. If you are concerned with gasoline efficiency, having a fuel consumption of just 0.07 GPH, the Genmax GM1200i is a device you could look out for.

Here's a list of the most popular specific comparisons:

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 1000-2000W inverter generators, the Predator 1400 is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

What is on off switch on fuel cap for?? (Asked July 04, 2021)

It's the vent switch. It should be OFF for storage or transport, and ON to run the unit.

I have a old school swamp cooler AC unit in my home and during summer time my electricity gets shut off. Will the predator 1100 power this kind of unit? It's a small 120v unit mounted inside my home. Not the big ones on roof tops (Asked July 27, 2021)

It is unfortunately not feasible to answer the question accurately without more specifics. The unit can output a maximum of 9.2 running amps and 11.7 starting amps. You'd have to look at your AC power requirements (rating plate).

Is this generator waterproof (Asked October 04, 2021)

The unit is not waterproof and should be properly sheltered. We recommend reading our article on generator operation in bad weather.

How much oil do I mix in the gas (Asked February 23, 2023)

None. The unti has a 4-stroke engine that does not require an oil/gas mixture.

on the predator 1400 how to access the air filter (Asked August 13, 2023)

Air filter maintenance is detailed page 20 of the owner's manual (opens in a new tab).
