Description

Zoom on the Predator 1400

In summary, the Predator 1400 is a compact and lightweight portable inverter generator especially useful for:

  • Tailgating and campground aficionados with the desire of enjoying power anywhere they go
  • DIYers who wish to improve their efficiency with tools

The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, the extra features it benefits from, and any relevant emission compliance details.

Power & Run Time

The Predator 1400 in use

The Predator 1400

The Predator 1400's design includes a gasoline-fueled 54 cc OHV 4-stroke engine. With a 120V output, it gives a running wattage of 1100W and also a peak wattage of 1400W. Moreover, since it is parallel capable (parallel kit not included), its power may be doubled if linked to a second compatible unit.

At a noise rating of 60.4 dBA (just slightly more noisy than background music), the inverter generator is started via a conventional pull-start mechanism.

With a full tank, the 1400 can operate for up to 7.3 hours (fuel consumption around 0.09 GPH), thanks to its fuel capacity of 0.65 gallon.

Sensitive electronics can be safely plugged in the AC outlets, as the 1400 produces a clean sine wave, with a <3% Total Harmonic Disruption (THD).

Outlets

The control panel provides the upcoming 2 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R)

Additionally, it features 3 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports with which you may charge electronics, for example mobile phones or tablets, conveniently and a 12V 5A receptacle with which you may charge your batteries with ease.

Portability

Thanks to its closed inverter generator design (L18.5 x W10.7 x H15.5 in), the Predator 1400, is more esthetical than a typical, open frame generator. The generator has a contemporary design, convenient for recreationally generating power.

Since the 1400 weighs only 33 lbs, it can be labeled as a portable lightweight generator. The generator can be moved with ease by only one person and so it can be enjoyed on-the-go. In addition, a handle (molded in the case) lets you carry it easily and further increases its convenience.

Good to know: This unit ranks 10th in our list of the 10 smallest portable generators.

Features

Panel of the Predator 1400

The 1400's control panel

The device’s light indicators will display if its oil levels are insufficient, the generator is ready and the generator is overloaded.

From a security standpoint, the product offers an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), allowing you to use it with a peace of mind.

The unit also benefits from the Predator's CO SECURE™ carbon monoxide detection. This system monitors the accumulation of CO gas while the generator is running and will shut off the engine if the levels become dangerously high. It’s a welcomed additional security feature, but don’t forget to always take your generator outside (opens in a new tab).

Apart from the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), which lets you start it right away, the Predator 1400 also is packed along with the following accessories: funnel, battery charging cables, tool kit and oil.

Emissions

The Predator 1400 is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. It can therefore be sold and purchased in all 50 states, including California.

Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, making it usable in forested areas.

The Predator 1400 versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Predator 1400 compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 1000 and 2000 W).

  • As for its weight, the Predator 1400 weighs only 33 pounds, making it one of the lighter inverter generators in the 1000-2000 rated wattage category. Regarding dry weight, one of the champions in the same power range is the Genmax GM1200i, with a dry weight of only 25.3 lbs.
  • When compared to devices able to produce a similar running wattage, this inverter generator and its lowest emitted noise of 60.4 dBA is on the noisier side. If you’d prefer a less noisy device, one of the most quiet devices, which share the same power range with this one, is the Honda EU2200i, whose lowest noise levels reach just 48 dBA.
  • The 1400's autonomy is somewhat low end compared to devices of its type and power range, as it reaches only up to 7.3 hours at 25% load on a full tank. Concerning the run times, one of the several devices with a comparable output, offering the highest autonomy, is the DuroMax XP2300iH, which is able to run for up to 13 hours.
  • While the run time is an important parameter, it is dependent on the fuel tank’s capacity and thus, doesn’t say much on its own unless we consider fuel consumption as well. At an estimated fuel consumption of 0.09 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load, this inverter generator is a rather fuel efficient one within its wattage category. If you are concerned with gasoline efficiency, having a fuel consumption of just 0.07 GPH, the Genmax GM1200i is a device you could look out for.

Here's a list of the most popular specific comparisons:

Price comparison

As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 1000-2000W inverter generators, the Predator 1400 is on the cheap side of the price range.

It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.

What is on off switch on fuel cap for?? (Asked July 04, 2021)

It's the vent switch. It should be OFF for storage or transport, and ON to run the unit.

I have a old school swamp cooler AC unit in my home and during summer time my electricity gets shut off. Will the predator 1100 power this kind of unit? It's a small 120v unit mounted inside my home. Not the big ones on roof tops (Asked July 27, 2021)

It is unfortunately not feasible to answer the question accurately without more specifics. The unit can output a maximum of 9.2 running amps and 11.7 starting amps. You'd have to look at your AC power requirements (rating plate).

Is this generator waterproof (Asked October 04, 2021)

The unit is not waterproof and should be properly sheltered. We recommend reading our article on generator operation in bad weather.
