Description

Zoom on the Predator 13000

In a nutshell, the Predator 13000 is a powerful portable generator mostly geared towards:

  • Professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure
  • Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures

The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, the extra features it benefits from, and any relevant emission compliance details.

Power & Run Time

The Predator 13000 delivers 120/240V and benefits from a tri-fuel technology that allows it to run on gasoline, propane, or natural gas. When gasoline-powered, it enjoys a running wattage of 10,000W and a peak wattage of 13,000W. When propane-powered, it benefits from 9,100 rated watts and 12,000 peak watts. Its natural gas operation offers 7,800W of rated wattage and 10,000W of starting wattage.

Enjoying a noise rating of 78.5 dBA (less noisy than a vacuum cleaner), this generator can be started thanks to a conventional pull-start mechanism, but also to a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included). The 13000 can also be remotely started, offering further convenience (key fob included).

The 13000, with a fuel capacity of 10.7 gallons, reaches a run time of around 12.1 hours at 50% load utilizing gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.88 GPH). Alternatively, it can reach a run time of around 3.2 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.47 GPH) with propane.

The 13000 is unsuitable for the powering of sensitive electronic devices due to its high THD (<23%).

Outlets

The control panel includes the following 7 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

Even if this Predator generator isn't quite RV Ready, it still allows for an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor, thanks to its L5-30R receptacle. Besides, as it features a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the 13000 is transfer switch ready: in case of a power outage, you will be easily able to connect it to a breaker box and power your household.

Portability

The encased design (L30.3 x W29.2 x H27.2 in) of the Predator 13000 offers more aesthetics than a conventional, open frame product. The design follows the contemporary trends and is perfect for recreationally generating power.

While the generator is considered to be technically 'portable' (in the sense that you can move it), manually lifting and transporting it may be challenging, due to its high weight of 226 lbs. Nevertheless, thanks to its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle (a decent solution to its lack of maneuverability), the generator can be easily moved, once placed the ground.

Features

The 13000's control panel

The 13000 and its control panel include a convenient meter, which displays voltage, frequency and lifetime hours. This feature comes handy when monitoring its status and activity.

In addition to this info, a light indicator shows you if its oil levels are insufficient.

The generator allows for a quick, easy and convenient assessment of its gas level, as it is equipped with a built-in fuel gauge.

As for its security measures, the device features an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), letting you use it with a peace of mind.

The unit also benefits from the Predator's CO SECURE™ carbon monoxide detection. This system monitors the accumulation of CO gas while the generator is running and will shut off the engine if the levels become dangerously high.

Along the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), useful for starting the generator right away, the Predator 13000's package also includes these accessories: battery charger, funnel, key fob, propane hose and tool kit.

Emissions

The Predator 13000 is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Thus, selling and purchasing this generator is allowed in each of the 50 states, including California.

Moreover, it features a spark arrestor and therefore, can be used in forested areas.

The unit also meets the ANSI/PGMA G300-2018 safety and performance requirements.

The Predator 13000 versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Predator 13000 compare to multi-fuel generators of similar power (between 9500 and 10500 W).

  • As its weight is 226 pounds, the Predator 13000 falls in the expected weight range of the inverters in the 9500-10500 rated wattage category. If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the Westinghouse WGen9500TFc, with a dry weight of just 203.4 pounds.
  • As this generator has its lowest possible noise of 78.5 dBA, it should be considered noisier compared to its peers of a comparable running wattage. If you’d prefer a less noisy device, one of the most quiet devices, which share the same power range with this one, is the Westinghouse WGen9500DF, whose lowest noise levels reach just 74 dBA.
  • As the 13000 features an autonomy of around 12.1 hours at 50% load, it has one of the highest run times in comparison to the other multi-fuel generators of its power range.
  • Run times are important, yet thanks to their dependence on the fuel capacity, they should be judged along with the fuel consumption of the device. Standing at an estimated 0.88 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 50% load, this generator is somewhat average in this area compared to other devices, within the aforementioned wattage range. If you wish to acquire one of the most gasoline efficient products of this power range, the Pulsar G12KBN, with a fuel consumption of 0.67 GPH could be in your good books.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 9500-10500W multi-fuel generators, the Predator 13000 is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

Why is the 13000 watt generator cheaper than the 9500? (Asked January 29, 2024)

There's a difference in technology. The 9500 is an inverter generator, whereas the 13000 is a conventional one. You may want to read this article explaining the differences between inverter and non-inverter generators.
