Description

Zoom on the Powerhorse s4500d

In a nutshell, the Powerhorse s4500d is a portable generator mostly geared towards:

  • RV travellers wishing to enhance their freedom and nomad lifestyle
  • People occasionally participating in sporting competitions, open-air performances and outdoor festivals
  • Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures

In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed.

Power & Run Time

Thanks to its dual-fuel technology, the Powerhorse s4500d delivers 120V and offers power and versatility. When gasoline-powered, it benefits from a running wattage of 3,600W and a peak wattage of 4,500W. When propane-powered, it has 3,200 rated watts and 4,000 peak watts.

Enjoying a noise rating of 95 dBA (which is pretty noisy), this generator offers the versatility of starting with either a manual recoil starter system or a convenient and efficient electric starter (battery not included).

In terms of its run time capability, the s4500d, furnished with a 3.9 gallons fuel tank, can maintain operations for around 10.6 hours at 50% load on a full tank of gasoline (with fuel consumption averaging 0.37 gallons per hour). It also provides around 11 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.43 GPH) of operation with propane.

Considering its high Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of less than 23%, it is not recommended to rely on the s4500d for powering sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel is equipped with the following 4 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R)
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle
120V 30A (TT-30R) receptacle

Moreover, it boasts 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports (USB-A) enabling convenient charging of devices like mobile phones and tablets.

This Powerhorse generator is RV Ready, as it features a TT-30R receptacle (TT stands for 'Travel Trailer').

Portability

At L26.5 x W23.5 x H21.4 in, the Powerhorse s4500d boasts a traditional open frame structure, ensuring stability and allowing for convenient maintenance access to components, promoting air circulation. This type of design is ideal for tough environments and heavy outdoor use.

Even though this device may be technically portable (as in movable), manipulation and transportation without special equipment can be a challenge, as it weighs 121 pounds. Despite the restricted maneuverability, its wheel kit and its folding handle provides a solution, allowing for convenient shifting once the generator is positioned on the ground.

Features

The s4500d's control panel

Integrated into the control center of the s4500d are a convenient meter, displaying voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours information, facilitating the monitoring of its status and activity.

In addition to this info, a light indicator serves to show you when the oil level is too low.

A built-in fuel gauge allows for a quick, easy and convenient check of the fuel level of the generator.

As far as security is concerned, the generator can be used with a peace of mind, as it features an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker).

It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.

Beyond the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to assist with setup, the Powerhorse s4500d ships with supplementary accessories: funnel, tool kit and propane hose.

The Powerhorse s4500d versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Powerhorse s4500d compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 3500 and 4500 W).

  • A weight of 121 lbs makes the Powerhorse s4500d one of the heavier dual fuel devices in the 3500-4500 rated wattage range. If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the WEN DF402iX, with a dry weight of just 66.1 pounds.
  • When compared to devices able to produce a similar running wattage, this generator and its lowest emitted noise of 95 dBA is on the noisier side. If you are concerned with noise, check out the Westinghouse iGen5000DF, which is one of the least noisy generators in its power range, with a noise rating of just 52 dBA.
  • The s4500d provides around 10.6 hours of runtime at a 50% load on a full tank, placing it within the average autonomy range among similar dual fuel generators. For those prioritizing autonomy, the Westinghouse iGen5000DF could be considered, as it offers one of the longest run times among generators with similar power output, reaching around 15 hours.
  • While the run time is an important parameter, it is dependent on the fuel tank's capacity and thus, doesn't say much on its own unless we consider fuel consumption as well. Standing at an estimated 0.37 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 50% load, this generator is somewhat average in this area compared to other devices, within the aforementioned wattage range. If not satisfied with the afore-mentioned fuel consumption, you may wish to check out the Westinghouse iGen5000DF. With a fuel consumption of as little as 0.23 GPH, it is one of the most efficient generators currently on the market.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 3500-4500W dual fuel generators, the Powerhorse s4500d is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
