Zoom on the Powerhorse s27000d
In summary, the Powerhorse s27000d is a powerful portable generator especially useful for:
- Professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment
- Prudent homeowners who want a full backup power source in case of a power outage
In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed.
Power & Run Time
With its dual-fuel technology, the powerful and versatile Powerhorse s27000d provides an output of 120/240V. While gasoline-powered, it gives a running wattage of 18,000W along with a peak wattage of 27,000W. While propane-powered, it provides 16,200 rated watts and 24,300 starting watts.
With a noise rating of 97 dBA (which is pretty noisy), the generator's ignition is facilitated by a convenient and efficient electric starter (battery included).
The s27000d, with a fuel capacity of 17.17 gallons, reaches a run time of around 8 hours at 50% load utilizing gasoline (fuel consumption around 2.15 GPH). Alternatively, it can reach a run time of around 2.8 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.68 GPH) with propane.
Sensitive electronics can be safely plugged in the AC outlets, as the s27000d produces a clean sine wave, with a <5% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD).
Outlets
The control panel features the upcoming 8 AC outlets:
Additionally, it features 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A receptacle making battery charging a breeze.
While not classified as 'RV Ready,' this Powerhorse generator can still provides the advantage of RV connection via its L5-30R receptacle, ensuring power supply to your RV with an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, due to the featured twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the s27000d is transfer switch ready: you may connect it to a breaker box to power your household during a power outage.
Portability
With a size of L38 x W25.5 x H33.6 in, the Powerhorse s27000d features an open frame design, providing stability and simplified maintenance access to components, enhancing air circulation. The device has been designed for tough environments and demanding outdoor use.
Even at 557 lbs, the generator is categorized as 'portable,' suggesting its movability, although its weight may impede its portability. Despite the restricted maneuverability, its wheel kit (⌀13") and its folding handle provides a solution, allowing for convenient shifting once the generator is positioned on the ground.
A lift hook located on the top of the frame offers an additional safety feature while facilitating the transport, loading and unloading of the generator.
Features
The s27000d's control center features a convenient meter, displaying voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours information to aid you with the monitoring of its status and activity.
The generator allows for a quick, easy and convenient assessment of its gas level, as it is equipped with a built-in fuel gauge.
Considering security aspects, the generator boasts an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, offering peace of mind throughout operation.
It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.
Besides the classic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to get you promptly started, the Powerhorse s27000d also comes with some accessories: funnel, battery charging cables, propane hose and tool kit are included.
The Powerhorse s27000d versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Powerhorse s27000d compare to generators of similar power (between 14000 and 22000 W).
- Tipping the scales at 557 lbs, the Powerhorse s27000d qualifies as one of the heaviest options among generators rated between 14000 and 22000 watts. If you are mindful of weight, the Westinghouse WGen14500TFc is among the top contenders in this power range, with a dry weight of 348.3 pounds.
- When stacked up against other devices of similar running wattage, this generator's lowest possible noise rating of 97 dBA places it in the louder category. If you wish to prioritize minimal noise, the DuroMax XP28000iHT stands out as one of the quietest options among generators of similar power, with a rating of 70 dBA.
- Autonomy-wise, with around 8 hours on a full tank at a 50% load, the s27000d is on the low end when compared to other generators of a similar power output. Furthermore, considering the run times, one of the generators which have a roughly same power output, with the highest autonomy, is the Westinghouse WGen20000, as it provides around 11 hours.
- Run time is a key metric, but it's dependent on the generator's fuel tank capacity. Therefore, discussing fuel efficiency is necessary for a complete understanding. Among generators of similar output, this generator ranks somewhat poorly in fuel efficiency, with an estimated consumption of 2.15 GPH at a 50% load. If not satisfied with the afore-mentioned fuel consumption, you may wish to check out the Westinghouse WGen14500DFc. With a fuel consumption of as little as 0.95 GPH, it is one of the most efficient generators currently on the market.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 14000-22000W dual fuel generators, the Powerhorse s27000d is on the expensive side of the price range.
While certainly not the cheapest of its kind, purchasing it would most likely also mean enjoying the reliability of a high-end product.

User Reviews
I use this generator for powering home during outage. which is 2-5 times a year! from times as a few hours to 23 hours.at this moment using now ,power been off 14 hrs. so far. the gas usage is better than what is being said. I started up generator at 11:55 pm.put gas back in it few minutes after 12 noon. had maybe 1” left in bottom of tank! never has failed ,had close to 3 years.always cranks, never sputtered.we have 4 ton ac.2 full size refrigerator..lights in house, electric hot water heater, oven, microwave. use at different times, never an issue. will not keep up in the winter heat pump pulling when heat strips kick in. but that is to be expected. with all other running. has paid for itself time after time. great investment
