Description
Zoom on the Powerhorse s27000d
In short, the Powerhorse s27000d is a powerful portable generator adequately designed for:
- Professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working
- Homeowners who wish to power almost all appliances in their house under any circumstances
In the following paragraphs, we shall explore the power characteristics, available outlets, portability, and any additional features of the device.
Power & Run Time
Featuring dual-fuel technology, the Powerhorse s27000d provides 120/240V, as well as versatility and power. Running on gasoline, it delivers a running wattage of 18,000W and a peak wattage of 27,000W. Alternatively, when fueled by propane, it offers 16,200 running watts and 24,300 peak watts.
With a noise rating of 97 dBA (which is pretty noisy), the generator's starting mechanism is centered around a user-friendly and efficient electric starter (battery included).
The s27000d, with a fuel capacity of 17.17 gallons, reaches a run time of around 8 hours at 50% load utilizing gasoline (fuel consumption around 2.15 GPH). Alternatively, it can reach a run time of around 2.8 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.68 GPH) with propane.
The s27000d generates a clean sine wave: providing <5% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), delicate electronics can be plugged in its AC outlets safely.
Outlets
The control panel features the upcoming 8 AC outlets:
Furthermore, it showcases 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A receptacle enabling simple battery charging for added ease.
This Powerhorse generator features an L5-30R receptacle, enabling an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. However, it is still not quite RV ready. Besides, equipped with a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the s27000d is engineered to be transfer switch ready, enabling simple hookup to your breaker box to provide backup power for your home during blackouts.
Portability
At L38 x W25.5 x H33.6 in, the traditional open frame structure of the Powerhorse s27000d ensures stability while facilitating convenient maintenance access to components and promoting air cooling. The featured design is ideal for the outdoors and all tough environments.
Even though this device may be technically portable (as in movable), manipulation and transportation without special equipment can be a challenge, as it weighs 557 pounds. Nevertheless, it can still be moved quite conveniently with the help of its wheel kit (⌀13") and its folding handle, once it is placed on the ground.
Further safety during transport, loading and unloading of the device is provided by a lift hook, which is placed on the top of the generator's frame.
Features
The control panel of the s27000d is equipped with a convenient meter, providing voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours data, aiding in monitoring its status and activity.
The generator includes a built-in fuel gauge, a quick, easy and convenient method of checking the device’s gas level.
From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, giving you a peace of mind during use.
It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.
Besides the classic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to get you promptly started, the Powerhorse s27000d also comes with some accessories: tool kit, propane hose, battery charging cables and funnel are included.
The Powerhorse s27000d versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Powerhorse s27000d compare to generators of similar power (between 14000 and 20000 W).
- Considering its dry weight of 557 pounds, the Powerhorse s27000d is one of the heaviest generators producing between 14000 and 20000 running watts. If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the Westinghouse WGen14500TFc, with a dry weight of just 348.3 pounds.
- This generator, with its lowest possible noise rated at 97 dBA falls into the more noisy category, compared to other devices of a similar running wattage. If noise level is one your key decisive factors, you may find the Westinghouse WGen14500TFc appealing. It's rated at 74 dBA, making it one of the quietest generators in its power range.
- Concerning its runtime, the s27000d provides around 8 hours at a 50% load, indicating that it falls on the lower side compared to other generators of its power range. If runtime is a priority for you, the Westinghouse WGen20000c stands out as one of the generators with the longest run time in its power range, providing around 11 hours of continuous use.
- While run time matters, it's heavily influenced by the fuel tank's capacity. Hence, it's important to consider fuel efficiency alongside. This generator doesn't excel in fuel efficiency when compared to others of its kind: it consumes approximately 2.15 GPH at a 50% load. If fuel consumption is your top priority, we suggest to check out the Westinghouse WGen14500DFc, which has a fuel consumption of only 0.95 GPH and thus, is one of the most efficient devices in our database.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 14000-20000W dual fuel generators, the Powerhorse s27000d is on the expensive side of the price range.
While certainly not the cheapest of its kind, purchasing it would most likely also mean enjoying the reliability of a high-end product.

User Reviews
I use this generator for powering home during outage. which is 2-5 times a year! from times as a few hours to 23 hours.at this moment using now ,power been off 14 hrs. so far. the gas usage is better than what is being said. I started up generator at 11:55 pm.put gas back in it few minutes after 12 noon. had maybe 1” left in bottom of tank! never has failed ,had close to 3 years.always cranks, never sputtered.we have 4 ton ac.2 full size refrigerator..lights in house, electric hot water heater, oven, microwave. use at different times, never an issue. will not keep up in the winter heat pump pulling when heat strips kick in. but that is to be expected. with all other running. has paid for itself time after time. great investment
