Description

Zoom on the Powerhorse s27000d

To sum up, the Powerhorse s27000d is a powerful portable generator tailored for:

  • Professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment
  • Homeowners who wish to power almost all appliances in their house under any circumstances

The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the extra features it benefits from.

Power & Run Time

The Powerhorse s27000d, equipped with dual-fuel technology and delivering 120/240V, ensures both power and versatility. Running on gasoline, it delivers a running wattage of 18,000W and a starting wattage of 27,000W. On propane, it provides 16,200 running watts and 24,300 starting watts.

With a noise rating of 97 dBA (which is pretty noisy), the generator's ignition is facilitated by a practical and straightforward electric starter (battery included).

The s27000d, with a fuel capacity of 17.17 gallons, reaches a run time of around 8 hours at 50% load utilizing gasoline (fuel consumption around 2.15 GPH). Alternatively, it can reach a run time of around 2.8 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.68 GPH) with propane.

The s27000d produces a clean sine wave: thanks to a <5% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), your sensitive electronics can be safely plugged in the AC outlets.

Outlets

The control panel features the following 8 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
Two 120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacles
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

In addition, it provides 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A receptacle enabling simple battery charging for added ease.

Despite not having the 'RV Ready' status, this Powerhorse generator provides the benefit of convenient RV compatibility through its L5-30R receptacle, enabling you to easily power your RV using an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, since it features a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the s27000d is tailored to be transfer switch ready, making it easy to connect it to your breaker box for home power support during outages.

Portability

With a size of L38 x W25.5 x H33.6 in, the Powerhorse s27000d features an open frame design, providing stability and simplified maintenance access to components, enhancing air circulation. The generator is designed for outdoor use and demanding environments.

While technically classified as 'portable' due to its ability to be moved, the 557 lbs of this generator may make manual lifting and transportation somewhat difficult. However, the limited maneuverability is remedied with its wheel kit (⌀13") and its folding handle, facilitating convenient shifting once the generator is positioned on the ground.

A lift hook located on the top of the frame offers an additional safety feature while facilitating the transport, loading and unloading of the generator.

The s27000d's control panel

To facilitate status and activity monitoring, a convenient meter, providing voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours data are embedded in the control panel of the s27000d.

The fuel level of the generator can be determined quickly, easily, and conveniently with the help of its built-in fuel gauge.

From a security standpoint, the generator is furnished with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), ensuring peace of mind during operation.

It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.

Beyond the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to assist with setup, the Powerhorse s27000d ships with supplementary accessories: tool kit, battery charging cables, propane hose and funnel.

The Powerhorse s27000d versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Powerhorse s27000d compare to generators of similar power (between 14000 and 22000 W).

  • A weight of 557 lbs makes the Powerhorse s27000d one of the heaviest devices in the 14000-22000 rated wattage range. If weight is your top priority, one of the champions in this power category is the Westinghouse WGen14500TFc, weighing just 348.3 pounds.
  • In comparison to generators with a similar running wattage, this generator's lowest emitted noise of 97 dBA can be considered noisy. If noise level is one your key decisive factors, you may find the DuroMax XP28000iHT appealing. It's rated at 70 dBA, making it one of the quietest generators in its power range.
  • Regarding its runtime, the s27000d operates for around 8 hours at a 50% load, positioning it at the lower spectrum among comparable products. If autonomy is your priority, one of the devices of a similar power output with the highest run time is the Westinghouse WGen20000, reaching around 11 hours.
  • Though run time is a significant parameter, it's closely tied to the generator's fuel tank size. To get a comprehensive understanding, fuel efficiency must also be taken into account. In fact, this generator is not one of the most fuel-efficient options in the aforementioned wattage range: its estimated gasoline consumption at 50% load is around 2.15 GPH. If minimizing fuel usage is one of your key priorities, the Westinghouse WGen14500DFc is one of the most efficient devices with similar power output, with a gasoline consumption of only 0.95 gallons per hour.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 14000-22000W generators, the Powerhorse s27000d is on the cheap side of the price range.

It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.

I use this generator for powering home during outage. which is 2-5 times a year! from times as a few hours to 23 hours.at this moment using now ,power been off 14 hrs. so far. the gas usage is better than what is being said. I started up generator at 11:55 pm.put gas back in it few minutes after 12 noon. had maybe 1” left in bottom of tank! never has failed ,had close to 3 years.always cranks, never sputtered.we have 4 ton ac.2 full size refrigerator..lights in house, electric hot water heater, oven, microwave. use at different times, never an issue. will not keep up in the winter heat pump pulling when heat strips kick in. but that is to be expected. with all other running. has paid for itself time after time. great investment
