Description
Zoom on the Powerhorse s15000d
In a few words, the Powerhorse s15000d is a powerful portable generator perfectly suited for professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working..
Over the following sections, you'll uncover its power characteristics, the selection of outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it includes.
Power & Run Time
With its dual-fuel technology, the powerful and versatile Powerhorse s15000d provides an output of 120/240V. While gasoline-powered, it gives a running wattage of 12,000W along with a peak wattage of 15,000W. While propane-powered, it provides 10,800 rated watts and 13,500 starting watts.
Rated for 97 dBA (which is pretty noisy), the generator's starting mechanism relies on a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included).
With a fuel capacity of 10.6 gallons, the s15000d can operate for around 10 hours at 50% load using gasoline (fuel consumption around 1.06 GPH), or for around 3.4 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.38 GPH) using propane.
The s15000d ensures a clean sine wave output, boasting <5% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) to protect your sensitive electronics when connected to its AC outlets.
Outlets
The control panel features the upcoming 7 AC outlets:
Moreover, it boasts 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A receptacle enabling simple battery charging for added ease.
Even if this Powerhorse generator isn't quite RV Ready, it still allows for an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor, thanks to its L5-30R receptacle. Besides, because the s15000d is equipped with a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: it can power your home during a power outage, as it can be easily connected to your breaker box to power your household.
Portability
With its L34.3 x W23.2 x H32.9 in dimensions, the open frame structure of the Powerhorse s15000d provides stability, simplified maintenance access to components, and better air cooling than enclosed units. The generator is designed for ideal use outdoors and in rough environments.
Although this generator is technically considered 'portable' (in the sense that it can be moved), its 348 lbs make may make it challenging to manually lift and transport. However, its challenging mobility is solved by its wheel kit and its folding handle, which will ease its displacement, once it is on the floor.
Further safety during transport, loading and unloading of the device is provided by a lift hook, which is placed on the top of the generator's frame.
Features
To help you monitor the s15000d's status and activity, its control panel is equipped with a convenient meter, providing voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours data.
In addition to this info, a light indicator on the device will signal if the oil level is too low.
Equipped with a built-in fuel gauge, the generator facilitates swift gas level checks.
As for its security measures, the device features an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, letting you use it with a peace of mind.
It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.
Along the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), useful for starting the generator right away, the Powerhorse s15000d's package also includes these accessories: propane hose, tool kit, funnel and battery charging cables.
The Powerhorse s15000d versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Powerhorse s15000d compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 10000 and 14000 W).
- As its dry weight is 348 pounds, the Powerhorse s15000d is one of the heavier of the dual fuel products which can generate 10000 to 14000 running watts. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the DuroStar DS13000MX, standing at just 209 lbs.
- When comparing it to devices with a similar running wattage, this generator's lowest noise level of 97 dBA puts it alongside the noisier units. If you'd like a less noisy alternative, the DuroMax XP16000iH is a strong contender. It boasts a noise rating of 67 dBA, placing it among the quietest generators in its power category.
- As the s15000d offers around 10 hours run time on a full tank at a 50% load, it falls within the average autonomy range among the dual fuel generators of a similar power. If extended autonomy is what matters most to you, the DuroMax XP15000HX+ could be an excellent choice, offering one of the longest run times among units in its power category, reaching around 12 hours.
- While the run time is an important parameter, it is dependent on the fuel tank's capacity and thus, doesn't say much on its own unless we consider fuel consumption as well. This generator is rather wasteful, compared to other devices within the aforementioned output range, when it comes to gasoline consumption, as it reaches roughly 1.06 GPH at a 50% load. If fuel consumption is your top priority, we suggest to check out the DuroMax XP15000HX+, which has a fuel consumption of only 0.69 GPH and thus, is one of the most efficient devices in our database.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 10000-14000W dual fuel generators, the Powerhorse s15000d is on the average side of the price range.
Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

User Reviews
Great Value, most generators in this power output range cost double when also having 5% or less THD (bought mine for $2,000). I have been using it to run a 220v mig welder, 220v plasma cutter, and a 110v air compressor. I have it on a mobile rig at a remote work site. Have probably 200 hours on this generator running on gasoline and have had no issues. Only complaint is it’s loud and heavy.
