Description
Zoom on the Powerhorse s15000d
In a nutshell, the Powerhorse s15000d is a powerful portable generator mostly geared towards professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure.
In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed.
Power & Run Time
Featuring dual-fuel technology, the Powerhorse s15000d provides 120/240V, and offers both power and versatility. Running on gasoline, it delivers a running wattage of 12,000W and a starting wattage of 15,000W. When propane-powered, it offers 10,800 running watts and 13,500 starting watts.
At a noise rating of 97 dBA (which is pretty noisy), the generator is started via a practical and straightforward electric starter (battery included).
The s15000d, with a fuel capacity of 10.6 gallons, reaches a run time of around 10 hours at 50% load utilizing gasoline (fuel consumption around 1.06 GPH). Alternatively, it can reach a run time of around 3.4 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.38 GPH) with propane.
Thanks to its low <5% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), the s15000d produces a clean sine wave output, making it safe for your sensitive electronics when utilizing the AC outlets.
Outlets
The control panel is equipped with the following 7 AC outlets:
It also sports 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A receptacle making battery charging a breeze.
Even though this Powerhorse generator isn't quite RV Ready, its L5-30R receptacle allows an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, because the s15000d is equipped with a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: it can power your home during a power outage, as it can be easily connected to your breaker box to power your household.
Portability
With a size of L34.3 x W23.2 x H32.9 in, the Powerhorse s15000d features an open frame design, providing stability and simplified maintenance access to components, enhancing air circulation. The generator is designed for ideal use outdoors and in rough environments.
Despite its 348 lbs, the generator falls under the category of 'portable,' signifying its movability, although its weight may hinder easy portability. Nevertheless, it can still be moved quite conveniently with the help of its wheel kit and its folding handle, once it is placed on the ground.
A lift hook, which is on the top of the frame, serves as an extra safety feature for the transport, unloading and loading of the device.
Features
Included in the control panel of the s15000d are a convenient meter, displaying voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours information, essential for monitoring its status and activity.
In addition to this info, the device’s light indicator will display if the oil level is too low.
With its built-in fuel gauge, the generator provides quick and convenient gas level checks.
Regarding security, the generator comes with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, providing peace of mind during operation.
It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.
Apart from the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), which lets you start it right away, the Powerhorse s15000d also is packed along with the following accessories: propane hose, funnel, battery charging cables and tool kit.
The Powerhorse s15000d versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Powerhorse s15000d compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 10000 and 14000 W).
- As its dry weight is 348 pounds, the Powerhorse s15000d is one of the heavier of the dual fuel products which can generate 10000 to 14000 running watts. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the DuroStar DS13000MX, standing at just 209 lbs.
- When comparing it to devices with a similar running wattage, this generator's lowest noise level of 97 dBA puts it alongside the noisier units. If you'd like a less noisy alternative, the DuroMax XP16000iH is a strong contender. It boasts a noise rating of 67 dBA, placing it among the quietest generators in its power category.
- As the s15000d offers around 10 hours run time on a full tank at a 50% load, it falls within the average autonomy range among the dual fuel generators of a similar power. If extended autonomy is what matters most to you, the DuroMax XP15000HX+ could be an excellent choice, offering one of the longest run times among units in its power category, reaching around 12 hours.
- While the run time is an important parameter, it is dependent on the fuel tank's capacity and thus, doesn't say much on its own unless we consider fuel consumption as well. This generator is rather wasteful, compared to other devices within the aforementioned output range, when it comes to gasoline consumption, as it reaches roughly 1.06 GPH at a 50% load. If fuel consumption is your top priority, we suggest to check out the DuroMax XP15000HX+, which has a fuel consumption of only 0.69 GPH and thus, is one of the most efficient devices in our database.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 10000-14000W dual fuel generators, the Powerhorse s15000d is on the average side of the price range.
Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

User Reviews
Great Value, most generators in this power output range cost double when also having 5% or less THD (bought mine for $2,000). I have been using it to run a 220v mig welder, 220v plasma cutter, and a 110v air compressor. I have it on a mobile rig at a remote work site. Have probably 200 hours on this generator running on gasoline and have had no issues. Only complaint is it’s loud and heavy.
