Description
Zoom on the Powerhorse s15000d
In summary, the Powerhorse s15000d is a powerful portable generator especially useful for professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure.
The subsequent sections will explore in detail its power characteristics, the diverse outlets it provides, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it offers.
Power & Run Time
Delivering 120/240V, the Powerhorse s15000d is enhanced by dual-fuel technology, providing power and versatility. Running on gasoline, it boasts a running wattage of 12,000W and a starting wattage of 15,000W. Alternatively, when propane-powered, it delivers 10,800 running watts and 13,500 starting watts.
The generator features a user-friendly and efficient electric starter (battery included). It is rated for a noise of 97 dBA (which is pretty noisy).
Regarding its running time, the s15000d, with a 10.6 gallons fuel capacity, can operate for around 10 hours at 50% load with a full tank of gasoline (fuel consumption around 1.06 GPH). When using propane, it can run for around 3.4 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.38 GPH).
As the s15000d produces a clean sine wave, with a <5% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), sensitive electronics may be plugged in the AC outlets safely.
Outlets
The control panel includes the following 7 AC outlets:
Additionally, it features 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A receptacle allowing you to easily charge your batteries.
This Powerhorse generator features an L5-30R receptacle, enabling an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. However, it is still not quite RV ready. Besides, as the s15000d holds a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: you'll easily be able to connect it to your breaker box to power your home during a power outage.
Portability
With dimensions of L34.3 x W23.2 x H32.9 in, the standard open frame design of the Powerhorse s15000d provides stability and easy maintenance access to components, as well as good air circulation. The featured design is ideal for the outdoors and all tough environments.
Though weighing 348 lbs, the generator remains classified as 'portable,' indicating its capability to be moved, though its weight could pose transport challenges. Still, once it is on the ground, its wheel kit and its folding handle can easily solve the issue of low mobility and allow for easy relocation of the device.
In addition, the device is equipped with a lift hook on the top of its frame, which provides extra safety during the loading, unloading and transport of the generator.
Features
Included in the control panel of the s15000d are a convenient meter, providing voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours data, essential for monitoring its status and activity.
In addition to this info, a light indicator on the device will signal if its oil levels are insufficient.
With its built-in fuel gauge, the generator provides quick and convenient gas level checks.
As far as security is concerned, the generator comes with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, providing peace of mind during use.
It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.
In addition to the traditional documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to help you get started promptly, the Powerhorse s15000d also includes several accessories: battery charging cables, propane hose, tool kit and funnel.
The Powerhorse s15000d versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Powerhorse s15000d compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 10000 and 14000 W).
- Weighing in at 348 lbs, the Powerhorse s15000d is one of the heavier dual fuel generators available in the 10000-14000 rated wattage segment. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the DuroStar DS13000MX, standing at just 209 lbs.
- As this generator has its lowest possible noise of 97 dBA, it should be considered noisier compared to its peers of a comparable running wattage. If noise is a concern for you, you could consider the DuroMax XP16000iH, which is one of the least noisy generators in its power range, rated at 67 dBA.
- With around 10 hours of runtime at a 50% load on a full tank, the s15000d is in line with the average autonomy range for dual fuel generators of comparable power. If extended autonomy is what matters most to you, the DuroStar DS14000iX could be an excellent choice, offering one of the longest run times among units in its power category, reaching around 12.5 hours.
- Even though run times are undoubtedly important, they are dependent on the fuel capacity to a large extent. For a more wholesome picture, we must take into consideration the fuel consumption of the generator. Compared to its peers, this generator is not exactly fuel-efficient, compared to similarly powerful devices, with an estimated fuel consumption of 1.06 GPH at a 50% load. If you wish to acquire one of the most gasoline efficient products of this power range, the DuroMax XP15000HX+, with a fuel consumption of 0.69 GPH could be in your good books.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 10000-14000W dual fuel generators, the Powerhorse s15000d is on the average side of the price range.
Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

User Reviews
Great Value, most generators in this power output range cost double when also having 5% or less THD (bought mine for $2,000). I have been using it to run a 220v mig welder, 220v plasma cutter, and a 110v air compressor. I have it on a mobile rig at a remote work site. Have probably 200 hours on this generator running on gasoline and have had no issues. Only complaint is it’s loud and heavy.
