Zoom on the Powerhorse 27000
In a nutshell, the Powerhorse 27000 is a powerful portable generator mostly geared towards professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working.
In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed, including its emission compliance information.
Power & Run Time
The Powerhorse 27000's core is the 999 cc OHV V-Twin engine, which runs on gasoline. With an output of 120/240V, it provides a running wattage of 18000W and a peak wattage of 27000W.
The generator features a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included).
The 27000 can operate for around 8 hours at 50% load with a full tank (fuel consumption around 2.15 GPH), due to its fuel capacity of 17.2 gallons.
Sensitive electronics can be safely plugged in the AC outlets, as the 27000 produces a clean sine wave, with a <5% Total Harmonic Disruption (THD).
The control panel features the following 8 AC outlets:
Additionally, it features 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A receptacle with which you may charge your batteries with ease.
Even though this Powerhorse generator isn't quite RV Ready, its L5-30R receptacle allows an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, as it features a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the 27000 is transfer switch ready: in case of a power outage, you will be easily able to connect it to a breaker box and power your household.
With its dimensions of L37.8 x W25.5 x H32.6 in, the conventional, open frame design of the Powerhorse 27000 offers stability and allows the generator to be raised above ground level. This type of design is ideal for tough environments and heavy outdoor use.
Although this generator is technically considered 'portable' (in the sense that it can be moved), its 510 lbs make it incredibly difficult to manually lift and transport. However, this lack of maneuverability is compensated by its wheel kit (⌀13") and its folding handle, with which you can conveniently shift it, once it's on the ground.
A lift hook, which is on the top of the frame, serves as an extra safety feature for the transport, unloading and loading of the device.
The 27000's status and activity may be monitored conveniently via the control panel, as it features a convenient meter showing you voltage, frequency and lifetime hours.
The generator allows for a quick, easy and convenient assessment of its gas level, as it is equipped with a built-in fuel gauge.
Security-wise, this product benefits from an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, which gives you a complete peace of mind when using it.
Apart from the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), which lets you start it right away, the Powerhorse 27000 also is packed along with the following accessories: battery charging cables and funnel.
The Powerhorse 27000 is EPA approved, but NOT CARB-compliant. Thus, it cannot be purchased or sold in California.
However, it features a spark arrestor, which makes it suitable for use in forested areas.
The Powerhorse 27000 versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Powerhorse 27000 compare to generators of similar power (between 14000 and 18000 W).
- At a dry weight of 510 pounds, the Powerhorse 27000 is one of the heavier devices which can produce between 14000 and 18000 running watts. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the Generac GP15000E, standing at just 363 lbs.
- Regarding its autonomy, the autonomy of the 27000, reaching around 8 hours at a 50% load, can be considered as low end, compared to other products of a roughly equal output. Concerning the run times, one of the several devices with a comparable output, offering the highest autonomy, is the Generac GP15000E, which is able to run for around 10 hours.
- The run time is important, but also hugely depends on the capacity of the fuel tank and doesn't mean much if we don't talk about fuel consumption as well. Compared to its peers, this generator is not exactly fuel efficient, compared to similarly powerful devices, with an estimated fuel consumption of 2.15 GPH at a 50% load. If not satisfied with the afore-mentioned fuel consumption, you may wish to check out the Generac GP17500E. With a fuel consumption of as little as 1.6 GPH, it is one of the most efficient generators currently on the market.
As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 14000-18000W generators, the Powerhorse 27000 is on the average side of the price range.
Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
The bottom line
- In the expected price range
- Several accessories included
- GFCI Outlets
- Electric start
- Clean sine wave
- No recoil back-up
- No remote start
- Not CARB-compliant
- On the heavy side (510 lbs)
- Relatively low run time
- Low fuel efficiency
