Description
Zoom on the Powerhorse 27000
In summary, the Powerhorse 27000 is a powerful portable generator especially useful for:
- Professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure
- Small homeowners in search of a full power backup solution
In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed.
Power & Run Time
Powerhorse 27000 is equipped with a 999 cc OHV V-Twin engine, running on gasoline and providing 120/240V, boasting a running wattage of 18,000W alongside a starting wattage of 27,000W. The impressive running wattage makes this unit the 2nd biggest portable generator currently on the market, along with the Generac GP18000EFI.
This generator features a hassle-free and practical electric starter (battery included).
Featuring a 17.2 gallons fuel tank, the 27000 can provide power for around 8 hours at 50% load on a full tank (with fuel consumption averaging 2.15 gallons per hour).
The <5% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of the 27000 ensures a clean sine wave output, providing a secure power source for your sensitive electronics through its AC outlets.
Outlets
The control panel is equipped with the following 8 AC outlets:
Moreover, it comes equipped with 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A receptacle with which you may charge your batteries with ease.
While this Powerhorse generator is not RV Ready, its L5-30R receptacle can be used for a simple RV connection with an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, due to the featured twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the 27000 is transfer switch ready: you may connect it to a breaker box to power your household during a power outage.
Portability
With its L37.8 x W25.5 x H32.6 in dimensions, the open frame structure of the Powerhorse 27000 guarantees stability, simplified maintenance access to components, and better air cooling than enclosed units. The design is ideal for rough environments and demanding outdoor use.
Though weighing 510 lbs, the generator remains classified as 'portable,' indicating its capability to be moved, though its weight could pose transport challenges. Nonetheless, the limited maneuverability is compensated for by utilizing its wheel kit (⌀13") and its folding handle, which facilitates shifting once the generator is set on the ground.
The generator comes with an additional safety feature, a lift hook on the top of its frame, which is helpful during its transport, loading and unloading.
Features
To facilitate status and activity monitoring, a convenient meter showing you voltage, frequency and lifetime hours are embedded in the control panel of the 27000.
The generator allows for a quick, easy and convenient assessment of its gas level, as it is equipped with a built-in fuel gauge.
As far as security is concerned, the generator comes with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), providing peace of mind during use.
Beyond the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to assist with setup, the Powerhorse 27000 ships with supplementary accessories: battery charging cables and funnel.

The Powerhorse 27000 versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Powerhorse 27000 compare to generators of similar power (between 14000 and 20000 W).
- At a dry weight of 510 pounds, the Powerhorse 27000 is one of the heavier devices which can produce between 14000 and 20000 running watts. If weight is a key factor for your needs, the Genmax GM17000iE is noteworthy for being one of the top contenders in this power range, with a dry weight of 308.6 pounds.
- In terms of its autonomy, the 27000 can operate for around 8 hours at a 50% load, placing it within the lower bracket among generators of similar power range. If extended autonomy is what matters most to you, the Westinghouse WGen14500DFc could be an excellent choice, offering one of the longest run times among units in its power category, reaching around 11 hours.
- Autonomy holds its importance, however, it is largely dependent on the generator’s fuel capacity and so, it is nonsensible to discuss it without mentioning fuel efficiency as well. This generator is rather wasteful, compared to other devices within the aforementioned output range, when it comes to gasoline consumption, as it reaches roughly 2.15 GPH at a 50% load. To prioritize fuel savings, we advise considering the Westinghouse WGen14500DFc, which stands out for its gasoline efficiency, consuming just 0.95 gallons per hour.
The bottom line
- Several accessories included
- GFCI Outlets
- Impressive quantity of AC outlets
- 4 different AC outlet types
- Electric start
- Clean sine wave
- No recoil back-up
- No remote start
- On the heavy side (510 lbs)
- Relatively low run time
- Low fuel efficiency
