Zoom on the Powerhorse 2500

To sum up, the Powerhorse 2500 is a compact portable generator tailored for:

  • Camping and tailgating hobbyists looking for a portable power source
  • Amateur DIY lovers

The subsequent sections will explore in detail its power characteristics, the diverse outlets it provides, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it offers.

Power & Run Time

The Powerhorse 2500 in use

The Powerhorse 2500

Powerhorse 2500 is equipped with a 212 cc OHV 4-stroke engine, running on gasoline and providing 120V, boasting a running wattage of 2,000W alongside a starting wattage of 2,500W.

With a noise rating of 67 dBA (less noisy than an office), the generator features a simple traditional pull-start mechanism.

With a fuel capacity of 4 gallons, the 2500 may run for around 11 hours at 50% load with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.36 GPH).

As the 2500 produces a clean sine wave, with a <5% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), sensitive electronics may be plugged in the AC outlets safely.

Outlets

The control panel is equipped with the following 4 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R)

Moreover, it presents 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A (cigarette lighter style) receptacle providing easy battery charging capabilities.

Portability

With dimensions of L25.4 x W18.8 x H19.8 in, the standard open frame design of the Powerhorse 2500 provides stability and easy maintenance access to components, as well as good air circulation. This type of design is ideal for tough environments and heavy outdoor use.

Though weighing 100 lbs, the generator remains classified as 'portable,' indicating its capability to be moved, though its weight could pose transport challenges. Nevertheless, thanks to its wheel kit and its folding handle (a decent solution to its lack of maneuverability), the generator can be easily moved, once placed the ground.

The 2500's control panel

Included in the control panel of the 2500 are a convenient voltmeter, which provides an easy way to monitor power output anytime, essential for monitoring its status and activity.

In addition to this info, the generator's light indicator provides visual feedback when the oil level is too low.

Equipped with a built-in fuel gauge, the generator facilitates swift gas level checks.

As far as security is concerned, the generator comes with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, providing peace of mind during use.

Regarding its accessories, besides the aforementioned features, the Powerhorse 2500's box includes the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), letting you start it right off the bat.

The Powerhorse 2500 versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Powerhorse 2500 compare to generators of similar power (between 1500 and 2500 W).

  • Tipping the scales at 100 lbs, the Powerhorse 2500 qualifies as one of the heaviest options among generators rated between 1500 and 2500 watts. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the Genmax GM2000i, standing at just 34.2 lbs.
  • Among the generators of a comparable running wattage, this generator with a lowest noise of 67 dBA can be judged as noisy. If you’d prefer a less noisy device, one of the most quiet devices, which share the same power range with this one, is the Honda EU2200i, whose lowest noise levels reach just 48 dBA.
  • Compared to devices of similar power, the 2500 stands out with one of the higher run times, lasting around 11 hours at 50% load. If you wish to prioritize autonomy, the Pulsar PG3250 shines as one of the top contenders, offering one of the highest run times among generators with similar power output, totaling around 16 hours.
  • Run times are important, yet thanks to their dependence on the fuel capacity, they should be judged along with the fuel consumption of the device. This generator is not fuel-efficient compared to devices of similar output: its estimated fuel consumption stands at 0.36 GPH at a 50% load. If minimizing fuel usage is one of your key priorities, the Westinghouse iGen2200 is one of the most efficient devices with similar power output, with a gasoline consumption of only 0.11 gallons per hour.

The bottom line

STRENGTHS:
  • Clean sine wave
  • High run time
WEAKNESSES:
  • No electric start
  • On the heavy side (100 lbs)
  • On the noisy side (67 dBA)
  • Low fuel efficiency
