Zoom on the Powerhorse 11000ES

In summary, the Powerhorse 11000ES is a powerful portable generator especially useful for:

  • Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
  • RV travellers wishing to enhance their freedom and nomad lifestyle

In the following paragraphs, we shall explore the power characteristics, available outlets, portability, and any additional features of the device, along with its emission compliance information.

Power & Run Time

The Powerhorse 11000ES in use

The Powerhorse 11000ES

The Powerhorse 11000ES's core is the 457 cc OHV 4-stroke engine, which runs on gasoline. With an output of 120/240V, it provides a running wattage of 8400W and a peak wattage of 11000W.

At a noise rating of 78 dBA (less noisy than a dishwasher), this generator can be started via a simple traditional pull-start mechanism, or a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery not included).

The 11000ES can operate for around 8.5 hours at 50% load with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.78 GPH), due to its fuel capacity of 6.6 gallons.

Delicate electronics can be plugged in an AC outlets safely, as the 11000ES generates a clean sine wave, reaching a <5% Total Harmonic Disruption (THD).

Outlets

The control panel features the upcoming 10 AC outlets:

Four Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R)
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

Furthermore, it has 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A (cigarette lighter style) receptacle with which charging your batteries is made easy.

If you own an RV with a 50-amp service, you can consider this Powerhorse unit as RV-ready, as it features a 14-50R outlet. Its L5-30R receptacle can also be used for a simple RV connection with an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor.

Portability

The Powerhorse 11000ES has the following dimensions: L29.3 x W26.6 x H26.4 in. In combination with its conventional, open frame design, they provide support and allow the generator to be raised above ground level. The device has been designed for tough environments and demanding outdoor use.

As the generator's weight is 209 pounds, manually moving it or transporting it may be challenging, despite the fact that it is technically considered 'portable' (movable). However, its challenging mobility is solved by its wheel kit and its folding handle, which will ease its displacement, once it is on the floor.

Features

The 11000ES's control panel

The 11000ES's status and activity may be monitored conveniently via the control panel, as it features a convenient voltmeter, which provides an easy way to monitor power output anytime.

In addition to this info, a light indicator shows you if its oil levels are insufficient.

Thanks to a built-in fuel gauge, the generator allows you to quickly, conveniently and easily check the gas level at a glance.

Security-wise, this product benefits from an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, which gives you a complete peace of mind when using it.

Besides the usual set of documentation and owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to get you promptly started, Powerhorse also included a tool kit in the 11000ES's packaging.

Emissions

The Powerhorse 11000ES is EPA approved, but NOT CARB-compliant. Thus, it cannot be purchased or sold in California.

However, it features a spark arrestor, so it is adequate for use in forested areas.

The Powerhorse 11000ES versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Powerhorse 11000ES compare to generators of similar power (between 7500 and 8500 W).

  • Having a dry weight of 209 lbs, the Powerhorse 11000ES belongs in the expected weight range for generators which produce 7500 to 8500 rated watts. If weight is your top priority, one of the champions in this power category is the Dewalt DXGNR8000, weighing just 183 pounds.
  • If compared to generators capable of producing a similar running wattage, this generator with a lowest emitted noise of 78 dBA can be considered somewhat noisy. If noise emissions are one of your priorities, you may be interested in the Champion 100719, one of the least noisy generators similarly powerful as this one, rated for 61 dBA.
  • As for its autonomy, the 11000ES, with an autonomy of around 8.5 hours at a 50% load, is placed on the low end among the generators of its kind. If you consider autonomy on a single full tank as one of the deciding factors, one of the generators in the same power range that offers the highest run time is the Champion 100416, with around 12.5 hours.
  • The run time is important, but also hugely depends on the capacity of the fuel tank and doesn't mean much if we don't talk about fuel consumption as well. As this generator uses an estimated 0.78 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 50% load, it finds itself in the average gasoline consumption range of similar products. If fuel consumption is your top priority, we suggest to check out the Pulsar PG10000B16, which has a fuel consumption of only 0.55 GPH and thus, is one of the most efficient devices in our database.

The bottom line

STRENGTHS:
  • Electric start
  • Clean sine wave
AVERAGE SPECS:
  • Decent weight (209 lbs)
  • Decent fuel efficiency
WEAKNESSES:
  • Battery not included
  • No remote start
  • Not CARB-compliant
  • On the noisy side (78 dBA)
  • Relatively low run time
