Description
Zoom on the NorthStar e14000s
In a nutshell, the NorthStar e14000s is a powerful portable generator mostly geared towards professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure.
The subsequent sections will explore in detail its power characteristics, the diverse outlets it provides, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it offers.
Power & Run Time
The NorthStar e14000s is powered by a NorthStar e670 OHV 4-stroke engine. It delivers 120/240V, runs on gasoline and offers a running wattage of 12,000W as well as a peak wattage of 14,000W.
With a noise rating of 73 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a shower), the generator's ignition is facilitated by an easy-to-use and reliable electric starter (battery included).
The Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) system enhances the engine's reliability, lowers fuel consumption, improves startup, reduces servicing, boosts stale fuel resistance, and offers better altitude adaptability.
With a fuel capacity of 12 gallons, the e14000s can run for around 10 hours at 50% load when the tank is full (fuel consumption is approximately 1.2 gallons per hour).
Featuring a <5% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), the e14000s delivers a clean sine wave, guaranteeing the safety of your sensitive electronics plugged into its AC outlets.
Outlets
The control panel includes the following 9 AC outlets:
Even if this NorthStar generator isn't quite RV Ready, it still allows for an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor, thanks to its L5-30R receptacle. Besides, equipped with a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the e14000s is engineered to be transfer switch ready, enabling simple hookup to your breaker box to provide backup power for your home during blackouts.
Portability
With its L43 x W36 x H35 in dimensions, the open frame structure of the NorthStar e14000s provides stability, simplified maintenance access to components, and better air cooling than enclosed units. The featured design is ideal for the outdoors and all tough environments.
Despite its weight of 388 lbs, the generator is considered 'portable,' signifying its capability to be moved, albeit its heaviness may hinder easy transport. However, its challenging mobility is solved by its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle, which will ease its displacement, once it is on the floor.
Features
The e14000s's control panel
To help you monitor the e14000s's status and activity, the unit's control panel is equipped with a digital display that provides extensive information on the generator (more information about it below).
As far as security is concerned, the generator comes with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, providing peace of mind during use.
It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.
Beyond the regular documentation and owner's manual (opens in a new tab) for quick start, NorthStar has included a funnel in the packaging of the e14000s.
Full-Featured Display
The excellent digital display
The unit is fitted with a colored, multi-function LCD display that offers simple, yet incredinbly exhaustive, at-a-glance monitoring. It features 3 screens:
- Home: Gives you information about the load that is connected, fuel level, estimated remaining run time, and total runtime of the generator
- Service: Displays maintenance intervals and the time remaining before each service is due
- Diagnostic: Provides various electrical data, such as voltage, current, and frequency
The NorthStar e14000s versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the NorthStar e14000s compare to generators of similar power (between 10000 and 14000 W).
- With its weight of 388 lbs, the NorthStar e14000s is one of the heavier generators in the 10000-14000 rated wattage category. If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the Genmax GM12000XiT, with a dry weight of just 194 pounds.
- At 73 dBA, this generator's noise rating is in line with the expected average for devices within its power category. If noise is a concern for you, you could consider the Genmax GM13500iETC, which is one of the least noisy generators in its power range, rated at 62 dBA.
- Offering around 10 hours of running time on a full tank at 50% load, the e14000s is within the average autonomy range of similarly powerful generators. If prolonged run time is essential to your needs, you could consider the DuroStar DS14000iX, which offers one of the highest autonomy among devices with similar power output, lasting around 12.5 hours.
- While the run time is an important parameter, it is dependent on the fuel tank's capacity and thus, doesn't say much on its own unless we consider fuel consumption as well. In terms of fuel efficiency within its wattage range, this generator falls short: it consumes approximately 1.2 GPH at a 50% load. If you wish to further improve in the area of fuel efficiency, the WEN TF1450X, which boasts with a gas consumption of only 0.68 GPH, may be the right generator for you.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 10000-14000W generators, the NorthStar e14000s is on the average side of the price range.
Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
