Description
Zoom on the KOHLER PRO12.3EFI
In a nutshell, the KOHLER PRO12.3EFI is a powerful portable generator mostly geared towards professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure.
The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, the extra features it benefits from, and any relevant emission compliance details.
Power & Run Time
The KOHLER PRO12.3EFI's design includes a gasoline-fueled 694 cc KOHLER Command PRO® EFI OHV 4-stroke engine. With a 120/240V output, it gives a running wattage of 10500W and also a peak wattage of 12300W.
The generator is rated for a noise of 79.9 dBA (less noisy than a shower). Its starting mechanisms include a simple traditional pull-start mechanism and a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included). To add further convenience, the PRO12.3EFI can be remotely started (separate purchase).
The Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) system enhances the engine's reliability, lowers fuel consumption, improves startup, reduces servicing, boosts stale fuel resistance, and offers better altitude adaptability.
With a full tank, the PRO12.3EFI can operate for around 10 hours at 50% load (fuel consumption around 0.87 GPH), thanks to its fuel capacity of 8.7 gallons. Refilling the fuel tank is facilitated by KOHLER’s Accu-Fill™ technology. It offers a 45% larger angled fuel inlet, which allows for an easier and safer pouring of gasoline as well as less spilling.
Delicate electronics can be plugged in an AC outlets safely, as the PRO12.3EFI generates a clean sine wave, reaching a <5% Total Harmonic Disruption (THD).
Outlets
The control panel features the following 7 AC outlets:
It also sports 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A receptacle with which charging your batteries is made easy.
While this KOHLER generator is not RV Ready, its L5-30R receptacle can be used for a simple RV connection with an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, since the PRO12.3EFI bears a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: it is easily connectible to a breaker box and can power your home in case of a power outage.
Portability
The dimensions of the KOHLER PRO12.3EFI, which are L35.2 x W22.4 x H30.3 in, and its typical, open frame design provides stability and enables the generator to be raised above ground level. This type of design is ideal for tough environments and heavy outdoor use.
Since the generator weighs 306 lbs, it will be incredibly difficult to manually lift it and transport it, even though it is technically considered to 'be portable' (in the sense that it is movable). Nevertheless, it can still be moved quite conveniently with the help of its wheel kit, once it is placed on the ground.
Features
To help you monitor the PRO12.3EFI's status and activity, its control panel is equipped with a digital data center, giving you information on the lifetime run hours.
A built-in fuel gauge allows for a quick, easy and convenient check of the fuel level of the generator.
As for its security measures, the device features an automatic low oil shut-off (Oil Sentry™ technology) and an overload protection (circuit breaker), letting you use it with a peace of mind.
As for its accessories, apart from the previously mentioned features, the KOHLER PRO12.3EFI also comes with the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), allowing you to start it right away.
Emissions
The KOHLER PRO12.3EFI is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. It can therefore be sold and purchased in all 50 states, including California.
The KOHLER PRO12.3EFI versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the KOHLER PRO12.3EFI compare to generators of similar power (between 10000 and 11000 W).
- As its dry weight is 306 pounds, the KOHLER PRO12.3EFI is one of the heavier of the products which can generate 10000 to 11000 running watts. If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above mentioned power range is the A-iPower SUA13000EFI, with a dry weight of just 218 pounds.
- When compared to devices able to produce a similar running wattage, this generator and its lowest emitted noise of 79.9 dBA is on the noisier side. For those who are looking for a less noisy device, we suggest the A-iPower SUA13000EFI. With just 69 dBA, it is one of the most quiet devices in this power range.
- The PRO12.3EFI, offering a run time of around 10 hours with a full tank at a 50% load, falls within the average autonomy range when compared to its peers. If autonomy is your priority, one of the devices of a similar power output with the highest run time is the Powerhorse 13000ES, reaching around 15 hours.
- The run time is important, but also hugely depends on the capacity of the fuel tank and doesn't mean much if we don't talk about fuel consumption as well. This generator can be considered as fuel efficient, due to its low estimated fuel consumption of only 0.87 GPH (gallon per hour) at 50% load, within the aforementioned wattage range. If not satisfied with the afore-mentioned fuel consumption, you may wish to check out the A-iPower SUA13000EFI. With a fuel consumption of as little as 0.78 GPH, it is one of the most efficient generators currently on the market.
Price comparison
As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 10000-11000W generators, the KOHLER PRO12.3EFI is on the expensive side of the price range.
While certainly not the cheapest of its kind, purchasing it would most likely also mean enjoying the reliability of a high-end product.
The bottom line
- GFCI Outlets
- Remote start capable
- Clean sine wave
- Electronic Fuel Injection
- Fuel efficient
- Decent run time
- On the expensive side
- No spark arrestor
- On the heavy side (306 lbs)
- On the noisy side (79.9 dBA)
