Power & Run Time

The Honda EU3200i in use

The Honda EU3200i

Running on gasoline, the Honda EU3200i operates with a 130 cc Honda GX130 OHC 4-stroke engine with cast iron sleeve, delivering 120V, with a running wattage of 2,600W and a peak wattage of 3,200W. Additionally, the parallel capability (parallel kit not included) facilitates doubling of power output when linked to another similar or compatible unit, offering enhanced energy capacity and reliability for diverse requirements.

With a noise rating of 54 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a refrigerator), the inverter generator's ignition is facilitated by a simple traditional pull-start mechanism.

The Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) system enhances the engine's reliability, lowers fuel consumption, improves startup, reduces servicing, boosts stale fuel resistance, and offers better altitude adaptability.

Featuring a 1.2 gallon fuel tank, the EU3200i provides continuous power for up to 8.6 hours on a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.14 GPH).

Featuring a <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), the EU3200i delivers a clean sine wave, guaranteeing the safety of your sensitive electronics plugged into its AC outlets.

Outlets

The control panel features the upcoming 3 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R)
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle

This Honda generator isn't quite RV Ready, but it features an L5-30R receptacle, allowing a simple RV connection through an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor.

Portability

With an inverter generator design, the Honda EU3200i features a closed construction (L22.5 x W12 x H17.8 in), enhancing aesthetics and ensuring reduced noise levels, offering a distinct advantage over standard, open frame generators. This modern design aims to provide an ideal power solution to recreational users.

As the EU3200i's weight is only 59.1 lbs, it can follow you and your power needs anywhere. Additionally, a conveniently placed handle (molded in the case) enhances grip, greatly aiding in moving the EU3200i across any distance.

Features

The EU3200i's control panel

One of the many EU3200i's features is the digital data center, included in its control panel, which conveniently provides information on the fuel level and thus, helps you monitor its activity and status.

In addition to this info, when the oil level is too low, the generator is on overload and the generator is ready, you will be informed by the featured light indicators.

Regarding security, the generator comes with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off (Oil Alert®), providing peace of mind during operation.

As for its accessories, apart from the previously mentioned features, the Honda EU3200i also comes with the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), allowing you to start it right away.

CO Minder

CO Minder of the Honda EU3200i

CO Minder monitors the ambient CO concentration

Honda's CO Minder is a system that monitors the ambient carbon monoxide concentration, and automatically stops the engine if the sensor detects a CO level of or exceeding 800 parts per million (ppm) at a given time, or an average of 400 ppm for 10 minutes.

A CO alarm indicator will flash for about five minutes, during which it will be impossible to restart the engine.

Honda My Generator App

Honda My Generator App

Honda My Generator helps you monitor your unit

The Honda My Generator App (available on iOS and Android) makes owning the EU3200i even more flexible and convenient, whether you are depending on it at home during a power outage, or enjoying an adventure at a remote campsite.

The app connects your unit and your phone via Bluetooth, across a 75-foot line of sight, giving you valuable information about your generator's operation and many additional features in the palm of your hands.

With it, you can easily monitor a range of information such as output power, lifetime run hours, oil life, or estimated remaining runtime. You’ll also receive warnings and notifications to remind you of routine maintenance.

The app allows you to control multiple, compatible Honda generators from a single mobile device and, even though the EU3200i does not have an electric start and requires a manual start-up, you’ll be able to remotely stop it.

The Honda EU3200i versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Honda EU3200i compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 2500 and 3500 W).

  • Considering its weight, the Honda EU3200i registers at a modest 59.1 pounds, placing it among the lighter inverter generators in the 2500 to 3500 rated wattage selection. If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the Pulsar PGD40iSCO, with a dry weight of just 46 pounds.
  • This inverter generator offers a rated noise level of 54 dBA, placing it among the quieter alternatives in its type and power category. If you wish to prioritize minimal noise, the Honda EU3000iS stands out as one of the quietest options among generators of similar power, with a rating of 50 dBA.
  • The EU3200i's autonomy is somewhat low end compared to devices of its type and power range, as it reaches only up to 8.6 hours at 25% load on a full tank. If autonomy is your priority, one of the devices of a similar power output with the highest run time is the Champion 200977, reaching up to 22 hours.
  • Run time is crucial, but it heavily relies on the fuel tank's capacity. Thus, considering fuel efficiency alongside is essential. This inverter generator has one of the best fuel efficiency when compared to other units in the aforementioned output range, consuming approximately 0.14 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load.

Price comparison

It’s a decent generator, but it’s considerably louder than the EU7000is, way less output and not very good startup power. My victron 3kVa inverter in my van will run tons of stuff the Honda won’t. The fuel capacity is too small and overall I would say I regret the purchase for business use. The internal rubber timing belt is oil bathed and technically due to be checked every 250 hours…. Also when I take this camping, the slightest inclines will trip the oil level shutdown. I’m not sure who this generator was supposed to be for, but I feel like Honda really dropped the ball with it.

    + PROS:
    • It’s fuel injected and starts first pull every time.
    - CONS:
    • Tiny fuel tank, poor surge handling (even with eco off), pretty loud, awkward to carry, sensitive to inclines, very expensive for the output.

It’s not really quiet. It has a very low frequency output that vibrates a lot. And that only at 1200 watt draw. I have a 14 year old Yamaha eu 2400 that remember me quieter at 1200 watts

    + PROS:
    • Light.
    - CONS:
    • Noisy. Low frequency noise. At 70% output it’s really loude.

I previously purchased two EU220i generators to run my travel trailer while dry camping. The two were a lot to lug around, plus gas/propane etc. I expected the EU3200i would be able to handle the load by itself, allowing me to cut my weight by 40%+ and have more space in my tow rig. Unfortunately the EU3200i is not able to start a 12,000BTU AC unit at higher elevations, where the two EU2200i don’t even struggle. So I was faced with a dilemma; I have to install a soft start on my AC unit, to start it with the 3200, but at that point one 2200 would be capable of running the AC by itself, with longer runtime, at 10lbs lighter. Suffice it to say, I was disappointed, not so much with the generator, more so myself for not doing more research into the generator, to understand if it would meet my specific demands.

That was a $3000 mistake. For the same price you can have two dual fuel EU2200i generators making 25% more power, but you sacrifice weight and space.

Now to review the generator. It’s surprising light weight for its output. As advertised, it is quiet, and due to the EFI, has less odor emissions than similar carbureted generators. Started first pull almost every try. Ran for 15 hrs on 1.5 gal of fuel at fluctuating loads. The bluetooth is gimmicky and very onerous to setup. While its nice when “FINALLY” paired with the app, (quick acccess to service/maintenance intervals, runtime, oil life, fuel remaining and remote shutoff), this model is not equipped with a battery/electric start. I understand why, it would add significant weight… the lack of which though, makes the bluetooth enabled feature a hassle I am not sure is worth the few conveniences.

If I am being honest and I had to title this review, it would be “3200 reasons this is a $3000 mistake”. Do better than me.

    + PROS:
    • EFI means first pull starts (almost) everytime.
    • Decent runtime.
    • Lightweight for its output.
    • Bluetooth+App makes maintenance reminders easy.
    - CONS:
    • Expensive.
    • Unable to start 12,000BTU AC at higher elevations.
    • Bluetooth pairing is clunky and onerous.
