Description
Zoom on the Honda EU2200i Companion
In summary, the Honda EU2200i Companion is a quiet, compact and lightweight portable inverter generator especially useful for:
- Camping and tailgating buffs looking to enhance their experience
- Amateur DIY lovers
- RV travellers who wish to upgrade their experience to another level
In the following paragraphs, we shall explore the power characteristics, available outlets, portability, and any additional features of the device.
Power & Run Time
The Honda EU2200i Companion's core is the 121 cc Honda GXR120 OHV 4-stroke engine, which runs on gasoline. With an output of 120V, it provides a running wattage of 1,800W and a peak wattage of 2,200W. Furthermore, its parallel capability (Honda parallel cables (opens in a new tab) not included) allows for doubling of power output when connected to another similar or compatible unit, ensuring expanded energy capacity and reliability for various applications.
With a noise rating of 48 dBA (less noisy than bird calls), the inverter generator features a manual recoil starter system.
The fuel capacity of 0.95 gallon allows the EU2200i Companion to operate for up to 8.1 hours with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.12 GPH).
The EU2200i Companion ensures a clean sine wave output, boasting <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) to protect your sensitive electronics when connected to its AC outlets.
Outlets
The control panel includes the following 2 AC outlets:
This Honda generator isn't quite RV Ready, but it features an L5-30R receptacle, allowing a simple RV connection through an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor.
Portability
The Honda EU2200i Companion is an inverter generator and features an encased design with the following dimensions: L20 x W11.4 x H16.7 in. This design enhances aesthetics and helps minimize noise levels, distinguishing it from conventional, open frame products. This type of design is the most modern and convenient way to recreationally generate power.
With its weight totaling only 47.4 lbs, the EU2200i Companion stands out as a lightweight generator. It's easy for one person to move around, ensuring power availability on the move. The inclusion of a handle (molded in the case) makes carrying it a breeze, adding to its convenience.
Features
Light indicators on the device will signal if the generator is on overload, the oil level is too low and the generator is ready.
From a security standpoint, the generator is furnished with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off (Oil Alert®), ensuring peace of mind during operation.
Along with the aforementioned features, from an accessory standpoint, the Honda EU2200i Companion's box includes the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), which will help you start your generator promptly.
CO Minder
Honda's CO Minder is a system that monitors the ambient carbon monoxide concentration, and automatically stops the engine if the sensor detects a CO level of or exceeding 800 parts per million (ppm) at a given time, or an average of 400 ppm for 10 minutes.
A CO alarm indicator will flash for about five minutes, during which it will be impossible to restart the engine.
Honda My Generator App
The Honda My Generator App (available on iOS and Android) makes owning the EU2200i Companion even more flexible and convenient, whether you are depending on it at home during a power outage, or enjoying an adventure at a remote campsite.
The app connects your unit and your phone via Bluetooth, across a 75-foot line of sight, giving you valuable information about your generator's operation and many additional features in the palm of your hands.
With it, you can easily monitor a range of information such as output power, lifetime run hours, oil life, or estimated remaining runtime. You’ll also receive warnings and notifications to remind you of routine maintenance.
But there’s more! The app allows you to control multiple, compatible Honda generators from a single mobile device and, even though the EU2200i Companion does not have an electric start and requires a manual start-up, you’ll be able to remotely stop it.

The Honda EU2200i Companion versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Honda EU2200i Companion compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 1500 and 2500 W).
- At 47.4 lbs in dry weight, the Honda EU2200i Companion fits well within the typical weight bracket for inverter generators producing 1500 to 2500 rated watts. If weight is your top priority, one of the champions in this power category is the Genmax GM2000i, weighing just 34.2 pounds.
- With a noise rating as low as 48 dBA, this inverter generator is among the quietest options available in its type and power range.
- The EU2200i Companion's autonomy is somewhat low end compared to devices of its type and power range, as it reaches only up to 8.1 hours at 25% load on a full tank. If you wish to prioritize autonomy, the DuroMax XP2300iH shines as one of the top contenders, offering one of the highest run times among generators with similar power output, totaling up to 13 hours.
- Even though run times are undoubtedly important, they are dependent on the fuel capacity to a large extent. For a more wholesome picture, we must take into consideration the fuel consumption of the generator. This inverter generator has an estimated fuel consumption of roughly 0.12 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 25% load, rendering it somewhat average compared to devices of a similar output. If fuel consumption is your top priority, we suggest to check out the Westinghouse iGen2800, which has a fuel consumption of only 0.08 GPH and thus, is one of the most efficient devices in our database.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 1500-2500W inverter generators, the Honda EU2200i Companion is on the expensive side of the price range.
While certainly not the cheapest of its kind, purchasing it would most likely also mean enjoying the reliability of a high-end product.
The bottom line
- Parallel capable
- Inverter
- CO Minder
- Mobile app
- Quiet for its power (48 dBA)
- Decent weight (47.4 lbs)
- Decent fuel efficiency
- On the expensive side
- Relatively low run time
