Zoom on the Honda EU2200i Companion
In summary, the Honda EU2200i Companion is a quiet, compact and lightweight portable inverter generator especially useful for:
- Camping and tailgating buffs looking to enhance their experience
- Amateur DIY lovers
- RV travellers wishing to enhance their freedom and nomad lifestyle
In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed, including its emission compliance information.
Power & Run Time
The Honda EU2200i Companion's core is the 121 cc Honda GXR120 OHV 4-stroke engine, which runs on gasoline. With an output of 120V, it provides a running wattage of 1,800W and a peak wattage of 2,200W. Additionally, as the generator is parallel capable (Honda parallel cables (opens in a new tab) not included), it can be linked to a second unit for more power.
Enjoying a noise rating of 48 dBA (less noisy than bird calls), this inverter generator gets running thanks to a simple traditional pull-start mechanism.
Thanks to a fuel capacity of 0.95 gallon, the EU2200i Companion can operate for up to 8.1 hours with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.12 GPH).
The EU2200i Companion produces a clean sine wave: thanks to a <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), your sensitive electronics can be safely plugged in the AC outlets.
The control panel includes the following 2 AC outlets:
Even though this Honda generator isn't quite RV Ready, its L5-30R receptacle allows an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor.
Thanks to its closed inverter generator design (L20 x W11.4 x H16.7 in), the Honda EU2200i Companion, is more esthetical than a typical, open frame generator. The featured design follows the latest trends and is ideal for easy and recreational use.
Since the EU2200i Companion weighs only 47.4 lbs, it can be labeled as a portable lightweight generator. The device can be easily moved by just one person and thus, its power may be enjoyed on-the-go. In addition, a handle (molded in the case) lets you carry it easily and further increases its convenience.
The device’s light indicators will display if the generator is overloaded, the oil level is too low and the generator is ready.
As for its security measures, the device features an automatic low oil shut-off (Oil Alert®) and an overload protection (circuit breaker), letting you use it with a peace of mind.
Along with the aforementioned features, from an accessory standpoint, the Honda EU2200i Companion's box includes the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), which will help you start your generator promptly.
Honda's CO Minder is a system that monitors the ambient carbon monoxide concentration, and automatically stops the engine if the sensor detects a CO level of or exceeding 800 parts per million (ppm) at a given time, or an average of 400 ppm for 10 minutes.
A CO alarm indicator will flash for about five minutes, during which it will be impossible to restart the engine.
Honda My Generator App
The Honda My Generator App (available on iOS and Android) makes owning the EU2200i Companion even more flexible and convenient, whether you are depending on it at home during a power outage, or enjoying an adventure at a remote campsite.
The app connects your unit and your phone via Bluetooth, across a 75-foot line of sight, giving you valuable information about your generator's operation and many additional features in the palm of your hands.
With it, you can easily monitor a range of information such as output power, lifetime run hours, oil life, or estimated remaining runtime. You’ll also receive warnings and notifications to remind you of routine maintenance.
But there’s more! The app allows you to control multiple, compatible Honda generators from a single mobile device and, even though the EU2200i Companion does not have an electric start and requires a manual start-up, you’ll be able to remotely stop it.
The Honda EU2200i Companion is EPA approved, but NOT CARB-compliant. Thus, it cannot be purchased or sold in California.
However, it features a spark arrestor, so it is adequate for use in forested areas.
In addition, the unit meets the ANSI/PGMA G300-2018 safety and performance requirements.
The Honda EU2200i Companion versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Honda EU2200i Companion compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 1500 and 2500 W).
- At a weight of 47.4 pounds, the Honda EU2200i Companion places in the expected weight range of the inverter generators in the 1500-2500 rated wattage range. If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the Genmax GM2000i, with a dry weight of just 34.2 pounds.
- Since this inverter generator is rated for a lowest possible noise of 48 dBA, it can be considered as one of the most quiet of the products generating similar power.
- As for its autonomy, the EU2200i Companion, with an autonomy of up to 8.1 hours at a 25% load, is placed on the low end among the generators of its kind. Furthermore, considering the run times, one of the generators which have a roughly same power output, with the highest autonomy, is the DuroMax XP2300iH, as it provides up to 13 hours.
- The run time is important, but also hugely depends on the capacity of the fuel tank and doesn't mean much if we don't talk about fuel consumption as well. This inverter generator has an estimated fuel consumption of roughly 0.12 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 25% load, rendering it somewhat average compared to devices of a similar output. If you wish to acquire one of the most gasoline efficient products of this power range, the DuroMax XP2300iH, with a fuel consumption of 0.08 GPH could be in your good books.
As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 1500-2500W inverter generators, the Honda EU2200i Companion is on the expensive side of the price range.
While certainly not the cheapest of its kind, purchasing it would most likely also mean enjoying the reliability of a high-end product.
The bottom line
- Parallel capable
- CO Minder
- Mobile app
- Quiet for its power (48 dBA)
- Decent weight (47.4 lbs)
- Decent fuel efficiency
- On the expensive side
- No electric start
- Not CARB-compliant
- Relatively low run time

Founded in 1948, the Japanese Honda Motor Company has gained notoriety for consistently producing top quality engines, motor-powered vehicles and devices. Over the years, the company has gained a strong reputation in the motorcycle, automobile, but also power tool industry. Honda’s power tool division has been producing power tools since 1953, including tillers, mowers, blowers, sprayers and of course, power generators. While the company has expanded globally and moved a majority of its production out of Japan into other Asian countries, Honda is to this day known as a legend among the generator manufacturers.
The Honda EU2200i Companion is covered under a warranty for up to 3 years. This warranty may be limited and may not cover all parts of the generator.
