Description
Zoom on the Honda EU2200i Companion
In a nutshell, the Honda EU2200i Companion is a quiet, compact and lightweight portable inverter generator mostly geared towards:
- Camping and tailgating hobbyists looking for a portable power source
- Handcrafting enthusiasts who wish to work on-the-go
- RV travellers wishing to enhance their freedom and nomad lifestyle
In the following paragraphs, we shall explore the power characteristics, available outlets, portability, and any additional features of the device, along with its emission compliance information.
Power & Run Time
The Honda EU2200i Companion's design includes a gasoline-fueled 121 cc Honda GXR120 OHV 4-stroke engine. With a 120V output, it gives a running wattage of 1,800W and also a peak wattage of 2,200W. In addition, as it is parallel capable (Honda parallel cables (opens in a new tab) not included), this power can be doubled when linked to another similar or compatible unit.
The inverter generator is rated for a noise of 48 dBA (less noisy than a library). Its starting mechanism is based on a conventional pull-start mechanism.
The fuel capacity of 0.95 gallon allows the EU2200i Companion to operate for up to 8.1 hours with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.12 GPH).
As the EU2200i Companion produces a clean sine wave, with a <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), sensitive electronics may be plugged in the AC outlets safely.
Outlets
The control panel features the following 2 AC outlets:
Even if this Honda generator isn't quite RV Ready, it still allows for an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor, thanks to its L5-30R receptacle.
Portability
Since the Honda EU2200i Companion is an inverter generator, its closed design (L20 x W11.4 x H16.7 in) has an esthetical advantage over conventional, open frame devices. This type of design is the most modern and convenient way to recreationally generate power.
The EU2200i Companion is a lightweight, portable generator, as it only weighs 47.4 lbs. The generator can be moved with ease by only one person and so it can be enjoyed on-the-go. Its handle (molded in the case) allows you to carry it easily, further enhancing its convenience.
Features
The device’s light indicators will display if the generator is on overload, the generator is ready and the oil level is too low.
As far as security is concerned, the generator can be used with a peace of mind, as it features an automatic low oil shut-off (Oil Alert®) and an overload protection (circuit breaker).
As for its accessories, apart from the previously mentioned features, the Honda EU2200i Companion also comes with the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), allowing you to start it right away.
CO Minder
Honda's CO Minder is a system that monitors the ambient carbon monoxide concentration, and automatically stops the engine if the sensor detects a CO level of or exceeding 800 parts per million (ppm) at a given time, or an average of 400 ppm for 10 minutes.
A CO alarm indicator will flash for about five minutes, during which it will be impossible to restart the engine.
Honda My Generator App
The Honda My Generator App (available on iOS and Android) makes owning the EU2200i Companion even more flexible and convenient, whether you are depending on it at home during a power outage, or enjoying an adventure at a remote campsite.
The app connects your unit and your phone via Bluetooth, across a 75-foot line of sight, giving you valuable information about your generator's operation and many additional features in the palm of your hands.
With it, you can easily monitor a range of information such as output power, lifetime run hours, oil life, or estimated remaining runtime. You’ll also receive warnings and notifications to remind you of routine maintenance.
But there’s more! The app allows you to control multiple, compatible Honda generators from a single mobile device and, even though the EU2200i Companion does not have an electric start and requires a manual start-up, you’ll be able to remotely stop it.
Emissions
The Honda EU2200i Companion is EPA approved, but NOT CARB-compliant. Thus, it cannot be purchased or sold in California.
However, it features a spark arrestor, which makes it suitable for use in forested areas.
In addition, the unit meets the ANSI/PGMA G300-2018 safety and performance requirements.

The Honda EU2200i Companion versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Honda EU2200i Companion compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 1500 and 2500 W).
- Since the generator weighs in at a dry weight of 47.4 lbs, the Honda EU2200i Companion belongs in the expected weight range for inverters which can produce between 1500 and 2500 rated watts. If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the Genmax GM2000i, with a dry weight of just 34.2 pounds.
- With a lowest possible noise of 48 dBA, this inverter generator places itself amongst the most quiet of the products delivering similar power.
- Autonomy-wise, with up to 8.1 hours on a full tank at a 25% load, the EU2200i Companion is on the low end when compared to other inverter generators of a similar power output. If you consider autonomy on a single full tank as one of the deciding factors, one of the generators in the same power range that offers the highest run time is the DuroMax XP2300iH, with up to 13 hours.
- The run time is important, but also hugely depends on the capacity of the fuel tank and doesn't mean much if we don't talk about fuel consumption as well. As this inverter generator uses an estimated 0.12 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 25% load, it finds itself in the average gasoline consumption range of similar products. If you wish to further improve in the area of fuel efficiency, the DuroMax XP2300iH, which boasts with a gas consumption of only 0.08 GPH, may be the right generator for you.
Price comparison
As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 1500-2500W inverter generators, the Honda EU2200i Companion is on the expensive side of the price range.
While certainly not the cheapest of its kind, purchasing it would most likely also mean enjoying the reliability of a high-end product.
The bottom line
- Parallel capable
- Inverter
- CO Minder
- Mobile app
- Quiet for its power (48 dBA)
- Decent weight (47.4 lbs)
- Decent fuel efficiency
- On the expensive side
- No electric start
- Not CARB-compliant
- Relatively low run time

What is the difference between the EU2200i Companion and the EU2200iTAN1?
These model numbers refer to the same unit, but simply include more or less information regarding its specs, production batch, etc. Read how Honda name their generators.
What is the noise level when a 2200i companion is paired with a 2200i? (Asked June 23, 2020)
Both units have a noise rating of 48 dBA. Therefore, the expected noise level when these 2 units are paired will be 51 dBA. A doubling of any noise source produces only a 3 dB increase.
Why do you say the Companion is not RV ready if it has the 30 amp Rv plug? (Asked February 22, 2023)
The term "RV-ready" applies to units with a TT-30R outlet. The companion has an L5-30R outlet. You may read more about it here.
Is the 30 amp plug rated for 30 amps? (Asked February 25, 2023)
The 30-amp plug is rated for 30A, but only when the unit is paralleled.
