Zoom on the Honda EU2200i Companion
In a nutshell, the Honda EU2200i Companion is a quiet, compact and lightweight portable inverter generator mostly geared towards:
- Camping and tailgating buffs looking to enhance their experience
- Handcrafting enthusiasts who wish to work on-the-go
- RV travellers who wish to upgrade their experience to another level
The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, the extra features it benefits from, and any relevant emission compliance details.
Power & Run Time
The Honda EU2200i Companion's engine, 121 cc Honda GXR120 OHV 4-stroke, fueled by gasoline, can deliver 120V. It provides a running wattage of 1800W and reaches a peak wattage of 2200W. In addition, as it is parallel capable (Honda parallel cables (opens in a new tab) not included), this power can be doubled when linked to another similar or compatible unit.
With a noise rating of 48 dBA (less noisy than a library), the inverter generator features a simple traditional pull-start mechanism.
Thanks to a fuel capacity of 0.95 gallon, the EU2200i Companion can operate for up to 8.1 hours with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.12 GPH).
As the EU2200i Companion produces a clean sine wave, with a <3% Total Harmonic Disruption (THD), sensitive electronics may be plugged in the AC outlets safely.
Outlets
The control panel includes the following 2 AC outlets:
This Honda generator features an L5-30R receptacle, enabling an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. However, it is still not quite RV ready.
Portability
The Honda EU2200i Companion is an inverter generator and has an encased design of the following dimensions: L20 x W11.4 x H16.7 in. Thus, it is more aesthetical than conventional, open frame products. The design follows the contemporary trends and is perfect for recreationally generating power.
Weighing just 47.4 lbs, the EU2200i Companion can be considered a lightweight portable generator. The generator can be moved with ease by only one person and so it can be enjoyed on-the-go. It can also be carried without effort with a featured handle (molded in the case), further improving its convenience.
Features
Several light indicators serve to show you when the generator is overloaded, the generator is ready and its oil levels are insufficient.
As for its security measures, the device features an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off (Oil Alert®), letting you use it with a peace of mind.
As for its accessories, apart from the previously mentioned features, the Honda EU2200i Companion also comes with the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), allowing you to start it right away.
CO Minder
Honda's CO Minder is a system that monitors the ambient carbon monoxide concentration, and automatically stops the engine if the sensor detects a CO level of or exceeding 800 parts per million (ppm) at a given time, or an average of 400 ppm for 10 minutes.
A CO alarm indicator will flash for about five minutes, during which it will be impossible to restart the engine.
While it’s a welcomed additional security feature, remember to always take your generator outside (opens in a new tab).
Honda My Generator App
The Honda My Generator App (available on iOS and Android) makes owning the EU2200i Companion even more flexible and convenient, whether you are depending on it at home during a power outage, or enjoying an adventure at a remote campsite.
The app connects your unit and your phone via Bluetooth, across a 75-foot line of sight, giving you valuable information about your generator's operation and many additional features in the palm of your hands.
With it, you can easily monitor a range of information such as output power, lifetime run hours, oil life, or estimated remaining runtime. You’ll also receive warnings and notifications to remind you of routine maintenance.
But there’s more! The app allows you to control multiple, compatible Honda generators from a single mobile device and, even though the EU2200i Companion does not have an electric start and requires a manual start-up, you’ll be able to remotely stop it.
Emissions
The Honda EU2200i Companion is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Thus, selling and purchasing this generator is allowed in each of the 50 states, including California.
Moreover, it features a spark arrestor and therefore, can be used in forested areas.

The Honda EU2200i Companion versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Honda EU2200i Companion compare to generators of similar power (between 1500 and 2500 W).
- Since the generator weighs in at a dry weight of 47.4 lbs, the Honda EU2200i Companion belongs in the expected weight range for devices which can produce between 1500 and 2500 rated watts. If weight is your top priority, one of the champions in this power category is the Genmax GM2000i, weighing just 34.2 pounds.
- Since this inverter generator is rated for a lowest possible noise of 48 dBA, it can be considered as one of the most quiet of the products generating similar power.
- As for its autonomy, the EU2200i Companion, with an autonomy of up to 8.1 hours at a 25% load, is placed on the low end among the generators of its kind. If you consider autonomy on a single full tank as one of the deciding factors, one of the generators in the same power range that offers the highest run time is the Yamaha EF2800i, with up to 14.7 hours.
- While the run time is an important parameter, it is dependent on the fuel tank’s capacity and thus, doesn’t say much on its own unless we consider fuel consumption as well. This inverter generator has an average fuel consumption among comparably powerful devices, as it reaches 0.12 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 25% load. If you are concerned with gasoline efficiency, having a fuel consumption of just 0.08 GPH, the Energizer eZV2200P is a device you could look out for.
Price comparison
As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 1500-2500W generators, the Honda EU2200i Companion is on the expensive side of the price range.
While certainly not the cheapest of its kind, purchasing it would most likely also mean enjoying the reliability of a high-end product.
The bottom line
- Parallel capable
- Inverter
- CO Minder
- Mobile app
- Quiet for its power (48 dBA)
- Decent weight (47.4 lbs)
- Decent fuel efficiency
- On the expensive side
- No electric start
- Relatively low run time

What is the difference between the EU2200i Companion, the EU2200iTAN1 and the EU2200iTAG1?
The "G" in "EU2200iTAG1" indicates that the unit is CARB-compliant. The "N" in "EU2200iTAN1" indicates that the unit cannot be sold in California. Regarding the rest of the model names, as a rule of thumb, they refer to the unit itself, but simply include more or less information regarding its specs, production batch, etc. Read how Honda name their generators.
What is the noise level when a 2200i companion is paired with a 2200i? (Asked June 23, 2020)
Both units have a noise rating of 48 dBA. Therefore, the expected noise level when these 2 units are paired will be 51 dBA. A doubling of any noise source produces only a 3 dB increase.
