Description
Zoom on the Generac GP8000E
In a nutshell, the Generac GP8000E is a portable generator mostly geared towards:
- Food van owners who know that just a short power outage could lose them hundreds of dollars
- Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials
- Professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working
Over the following sections, you'll uncover its power characteristics, the selection of outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it includes.
Power & Run Time
With a 420 cc Generac OHV 4-stroke engine, the Generac GP8000E operates on gasoline, providing 120/240V, with a running wattage of 8,000W and a starting wattage of 10,000W.
Equipped with a manual recoil starter system and a hassle-free and practical electric starter (battery included), this generator provides versatile starting capabilities.
The GP8000E boasts a fuel tank capable of holding 7.9 gallons, allowing it to run continuously for up to 15 hours (with fuel usage averaging around 0.53 gallons per hour).
Considering its high Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of less than 20%, it is not recommended to rely on the GP8000E for powering sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel features the upcoming 5 AC outlets:
Thanks to its twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the GP8000E is transfer switch ready, facilitating easy hookup to your breaker box to provide backup power for your home during blackouts.
Portability
At L27.2 x W27 x H26.5 in, the Generac GP8000E boasts a traditional open frame structure, ensuring stability and allowing for convenient maintenance access to components, promoting air circulation. This type of design is ideal for tough environments and heavy outdoor use.
Since the generator weighs 198 lbs, it will be incredibly difficult to manually lift it and transport it, even though it is technically considered to 'be portable' (in the sense that it is movable). However, the lack of maneuverability can be offset with its wheel kit (⌀9.5") and its folding handle, which allows for convenient shifting once the generator is placed on the ground.
Features
Featuring a digital data center on its control panel, the GP8000E offers you convenient access to essential information about the lifetime run hours, facilitating effective monitoring of its activity and status.
Equipped with a built-in fuel gauge, the generator facilitates swift gas level checks.
From a security standpoint, the generator is furnished with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, ensuring peace of mind during operation.
The GP8000E also benefits from Generac’s COsense® carbon monoxide monitoring. This technology senses and manages CO output and shuts down the unit when necessary, to protect you from CO poisoning.
Alongside the typical set of documentation and the user manual to assist with setup, Generac has included accessory] in the packaging of the GP8000E.
The Generac GP8000E versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Generac GP8000E compare to generators of similar power (between 7500 and 8500 W).
- As far as its dry weight is concerned, the Generac GP8000E weighs just 198 pounds and thus, it is one of the lighter 7500 to 8500 rated wattage generators. Weight-conscious users may find the Westinghouse ecoGen10000 appealing, as it is one of the top contenders in this power range, weighing just 147.7 pounds.
- Regarding its autonomy, the autonomy of the GP8000E, reaching up to 15 hours at a 25% load, can be considered as low end, compared to other products of a roughly equal output. If prolonged run time is essential to your needs, you could consider the DuroMax XP10000HX, which offers one of the highest autonomy among devices with similar power output, lasting up to 22 hours.
- Though run time is a significant parameter, it's closely tied to the generator's fuel tank size. To get a comprehensive understanding, fuel efficiency must also be taken into account. Compared to similar devices, this generator is less fuel-efficient than most: it burns around 0.53 gallons of gasoline per hour at a 25% load. If gasoline efficiency is at the top of your list, you may want to have a look at the DuroMax XP9500iH, which has great fuel efficiency, with a gas consumption of only 0.34 gallons per hour.
Here's a list of the most popular specific comparisons:
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 7500-8500W generators, the Generac GP8000E is on the average side of the price range.
Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
The bottom line
- In the expected price range
- COsense® technology
- GFCI Outlets
- Electric start
- Lightweight for its kind (198 lbs)
- No 50-amp output
- No remote start
- Relatively low run time
- Low fuel efficiency

User Reviews
I’ve had this generator a little over 5 years. Have ran it 115 hours without a single issue. even the original battery is still holding up. Iget about 12 hours per tank while it’s connected to my house. Idle control and a 50 amp outlet would be nice added features. Overall very happy with this purchase and will buy Generac again in the future.
I could not disagree more with the review below. My GP8000e has run without any problems for several years. The electric start is great. I added a solar recharge for my battery and a over temperature kill switch in case the system overheats.
I just purchased a GP8000e 49 state version. It is made in Vietnam and nit the USA. very cheaply made and it shows. If Generac cut cost on the things that are visible, what did they do with the critical components? Very disappointed in this unit.
