Description
Zoom on the Generac GP8000E
In short, the Generac GP8000E is a portable generator adequately designed for:
- Food van owners who know that just a short power outage could lose them hundreds of dollars
- Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials
- Professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working
The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the extra features it benefits from.
Power & Run Time
The Generac GP8000E's core is the 420 cc Generac OHV 4-stroke engine, which runs on gasoline. With an output of 120/240V, it provides a running wattage of 8,000W and a peak wattage of 10,000W.
This generator offers two starting options: a conventional pull-start mechanism and a practical and straightforward electric starter (battery included).
Thanks to its 7.9 gallons fuel tank, the GP8000E can run continuously for up to 15 hours on a full tank (with an average fuel consumption of approximately 0.53 GPH).
The GP8000E is unsuitable for the powering of sensitive electronic devices due to its high THD (<20%).
Outlets
The control panel features the following 5 AC outlets:
The GP8000E's twist-lock L14-30R receptacle makes it transfer switch ready, enabling hassle-free connection to your breaker box for powering your home during outages.
Portability
With its L27.2 x W27 x H26.5 in dimensions, the open frame structure of the Generac GP8000E guarantees stability, simplified maintenance access to components, and better air cooling than enclosed units. The device has been designed for tough environments and demanding outdoor use.
Though weighing 198 lbs, the generator remains classified as 'portable,' indicating its capability to be moved, though its weight could pose transport challenges. Nevertheless, thanks to its wheel kit (⌀9.5") and its folding handle (a decent solution to its lack of maneuverability), the generator can be easily moved, once placed the ground.
Features
Monitoring of the GP8000E's status and activity is made possible by a digital data center, which provides information on the lifetime run hours and is one of the features of its control panel.
Thanks to its built-in fuel gauge, the generator allows you to quickly, conveniently, and easily check the gas level at a glance.
Regarding security, the generator comes with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, providing peace of mind during operation.
The GP8000E also benefits from Generac’s COsense® carbon monoxide monitoring. This technology senses and manages CO output and shuts down the unit when necessary, to protect you from CO poisoning.
In addition to the standard documentation and owner's manual for prompt setup, Generac has also included some oil in the packaging of the GP8000E.
The Generac GP8000E versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Generac GP8000E compare to generators of similar power (between 7500 and 8500 W).
- Weighing in at 198 lbs, the Generac GP8000E fits within the expected weight range for devices producing 7500 to 8500 rated watts. If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the Genmax GM10500XiT, with a dry weight of just 123.5 pounds.
- Regarding its runtime, the GP8000E operates for up to 15 hours at a 25% load, positioning it at the lower spectrum among comparable products. If autonomy is your priority, one of the devices of a similar power output with the highest run time is the DuroMax XP10000HX, reaching up to 22 hours.
- Even though run times are undoubtedly important, they are dependent on the fuel capacity to a large extent. For a more wholesome picture, we must take into consideration the fuel consumption of the generator. In fact, this generator is not one of the most fuel-efficient options in the aforementioned wattage range: its estimated gasoline consumption at 25% load is around 0.53 GPH. If minimizing fuel usage is one of your key priorities, the DuroMax XP9500iH is one of the most efficient devices with similar power output, with a gasoline consumption of only 0.34 gallons per hour.
Here's a list of the most popular specific comparisons:
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 7500-8500W generators, the Generac GP8000E is on the average side of the price range.
Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
The bottom line
- In the expected price range
- COsense® technology

User Reviews
I’ve had this generator a little over 5 years. Have ran it 115 hours without a single issue. even the original battery is still holding up. Iget about 12 hours per tank while it’s connected to my house. Idle control and a 50 amp outlet would be nice added features. Overall very happy with this purchase and will buy Generac again in the future.
I could not disagree more with the review below. My GP8000e has run without any problems for several years. The electric start is great. I added a solar recharge for my battery and a over temperature kill switch in case the system overheats.
I just purchased a GP8000e 49 state version. It is made in Vietnam and nit the USA. very cheaply made and it shows. If Generac cut cost on the things that are visible, what did they do with the critical components? Very disappointed in this unit.
