Description
Zoom on the Generac GP8000E
In a few words, the Generac GP8000E is a portable generator perfectly suited for:
- Food van owners who know that just a short power outage could lose them hundreds of dollars
- Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures
- Professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working
The subsequent sections will explore in detail its power characteristics, the diverse outlets it provides, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it offers.
Power & Run Time
Running on gasoline, the Generac GP8000E utilizes a 420 cc Generac OHV 4-stroke engine to deliver 120/240V, offering a running wattage of 8,000W and a starting wattage of 10,000W.
This generator features a manual recoil starter system and also a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included).
Featuring a 7.9 gallons fuel tank, the GP8000E guarantees continuous power for up to 15 hours on a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.53 GPH).
Since the GP8000E has a high THD (<20%), it is advisable to not use it for the powering of sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel features the upcoming 5 AC outlets:
As it features a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the GP8000E is transfer switch ready: in case of a power outage, you will be easily able to connect it to a breaker box and power your household.
Portability
Measuring L27.2 x W27 x H26.5 in, the classic open frame build of the Generac GP8000E delivers stability and easy maintenance access to components, facilitating air circulation. The device has been designed for tough environments and demanding outdoor use.
With a weight of 198 lbs, the generator is still labeled as 'portable,' denoting its ability to be moved, although its heaviness might restrict easy portability. Nonetheless, the limited maneuverability is compensated for by utilizing its wheel kit (⌀9.5") and its folding handle, which facilitates shifting once the generator is set on the ground.
Features
Embedded in the control panel of the GP8000E, a digital data center serves as a vital feature, offering comprehensive information on the lifetime run hours to aid in monitoring activity and status.
A built-in fuel gauge allows for a quick, easy and convenient check of the fuel level of the generator.
As far as security is concerned, the generator can be used with a peace of mind, as it features an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker).
The GP8000E also benefits from Generac’s COsense® carbon monoxide monitoring. This technology senses and manages CO output and shuts down the unit when necessary, to protect you from CO poisoning.
In addition to the standard documentation and owner's manual (opens in a new tab) for prompt setup, Generac has also included some oil in the packaging of the GP8000E.
The Generac GP8000E versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Generac GP8000E compare to generators of similar power (between 7500 and 8500 W).
- Since the generator weighs in at a dry weight of 198 lbs, the Generac GP8000E belongs in the expected weight range for devices which can produce between 7500 and 8500 rated watts. If weight is a key factor for your needs, the Genmax GM10500XiT is noteworthy for being one of the top contenders in this power range, with a dry weight of 123.5 pounds.
- As for its runtime, the GP8000E runs for up to 15 hours at a 25% load, placing it towards the low end among comparable products. If extended autonomy is what matters most to you, the DuroMax XP10000EH could be an excellent choice, offering one of the longest run times among units in its power category, reaching up to 22 hours.
- Run times are important, yet thanks to their dependence on the fuel capacity, they should be judged along with the fuel consumption of the device. This generator doesn't excel in fuel efficiency when compared to others of its kind: it consumes approximately 0.53 GPH at a 25% load. If you wish to further improve in the area of fuel efficiency, the DuroMax XP9500iH, which boasts with a gas consumption of only 0.34 GPH, may be the right generator for you.

User Reviews
I’ve had this generator a little over 5 years. Have ran it 115 hours without a single issue. even the original battery is still holding up. Iget about 12 hours per tank while it’s connected to my house. Idle control and a 50 amp outlet would be nice added features. Overall very happy with this purchase and will buy Generac again in the future.
I could not disagree more with the review below. My GP8000e has run without any problems for several years. The electric start is great. I added a solar recharge for my battery and a over temperature kill switch in case the system overheats.
I just purchased a GP8000e 49 state version. It is made in Vietnam and nit the USA. very cheaply made and it shows. If Generac cut cost on the things that are visible, what did they do with the critical components? Very disappointed in this unit.
