Description
Zoom on the Generac GP8000E
To sum up, the Generac GP8000E is a portable generator tailored for:
- Food truck owners who do not wish to see their business interrupted under any circumstances
- Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures
- Professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure
Over the following sections, you'll uncover its power characteristics, the selection of outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it includes.
Power & Run Time
Generac GP8000E runs on gasoline, powered by a 420 cc Generac OHV 4-stroke engine, delivering 120/240V, boasting a running wattage of 8,000W alongside a starting wattage of 10,000W.
This generator offers two starting options: a manual recoil starter system and a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included).
Equipped with a 7.9 gallons fuel tank, the GP8000E ensures continuous operation for up to 15 hours with a full tank (fuel usage approximately 0.53 gallons per hour).
Considering its high Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of less than 20%, it is not recommended to rely on the GP8000E for powering sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel provides the upcoming 5 AC outlets:
Equipped with a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the GP8000E is engineered to be transfer switch ready, enabling simple hookup to your breaker box to provide backup power for your home during blackouts.
Portability
With a size of L27.2 x W27 x H26.5 in, the Generac GP8000E features an open frame design, providing stability and simplified maintenance access to components, enhancing air circulation. The featured design is ideal for the outdoors and all tough environments.
While technically classified as 'portable' due to its ability to be moved, the 198 lbs of this generator may make manual lifting and transportation somewhat difficult. Nevertheless, it can still be moved quite conveniently with the help of its wheel kit (⌀9.5") and its folding handle, once it is placed on the ground.
Features
The GP8000E's control panel is equipped with a digital data center, furnishing detailed information on the lifetime run hours for you to easily track its activity and status.
The inclusion of a built-in fuel gauge in the generator streamlines gas level checks for quick and convenient assessments.
From a security standpoint, the generator is furnished with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, ensuring peace of mind during operation.
The GP8000E also benefits from Generac’s COsense® carbon monoxide monitoring. This technology senses and manages CO output and shuts down the unit when necessary, to protect you from CO poisoning.
Besides the usual set of documentation and owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to get you promptly started, Generac also included some oil in the GP8000E's packaging.
The Generac GP8000E versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Generac GP8000E compare to generators of similar power (between 7500 and 8500 W).
- With a dry weight of 198 pounds, the Generac GP8000E finds itself in the expected weight range for generators able to produce between 7500 and 8500 rated watts. If you are mindful of weight, the Genmax GM10500XiT is among the top contenders in this power range, with a dry weight of 123.5 pounds.
- Autonomy-wise, with up to 15 hours on a full tank at a 25% load, the GP8000E is on the low end when compared to other generators of a similar power output. If extended autonomy is what matters most to you, the DuroMax XP10000EH could be an excellent choice, offering one of the longest run times among units in its power category, reaching up to 22 hours.
- Run time is a key metric, but it's dependent on the generator's fuel tank capacity. Therefore, discussing fuel efficiency is necessary for a complete understanding. In fact, this generator is not one of the most fuel-efficient options in the aforementioned wattage range: its estimated gasoline consumption at 25% load is around 0.53 GPH. If you are concerned with gasoline efficiency, having a fuel consumption of just 0.34 GPH, the DuroMax XP9500iH is a device you could look out for.
Here's a list of the most popular specific comparisons:
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 7500-8500W generators, the Generac GP8000E is on the average side of the price range.
Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
The bottom line

User Reviews
I’ve had this generator a little over 5 years. Have ran it 115 hours without a single issue. even the original battery is still holding up. Iget about 12 hours per tank while it’s connected to my house. Idle control and a 50 amp outlet would be nice added features. Overall very happy with this purchase and will buy Generac again in the future.
I could not disagree more with the review below. My GP8000e has run without any problems for several years. The electric start is great. I added a solar recharge for my battery and a over temperature kill switch in case the system overheats.
I just purchased a GP8000e 49 state version. It is made in Vietnam and nit the USA. very cheaply made and it shows. If Generac cut cost on the things that are visible, what did they do with the critical components? Very disappointed in this unit.
